Recently, in response to calls for more transparency, many firms have begun reporting the activities undertaken by their audit committees in overseeing the work of the external auditor. We use a composite measure of audit committees’ reported oversight activities for a sample of S&P 1500 firms and examine the extent to which these reported activities are associated with audit quality. We find that when firms’ audit committees report exerting strong oversight, they have higher audit quality as proxied by audit fees, discretionary accruals, the likelihood of meeting or beating earnings benchmarks, and restatements. We also find that the market reacts positively to reports indicating strong oversight, consistent with perceptions of higher audit quality. This study extends prior literature on audit committees by introducing a new comprehensive measure of audit committees’ reported oversight activities and sheds light on how these activities map into audit quality.

This paper investigates the possibility and feasibility of the Islamic banking industry in Malaysia to hire external Shariah audit (ESA) services in the audit fraternity as one of the Shariah governance mechanisms to strengthen Shariah compliance in the industry. Methodologically, the study employs a qualitative method by utilizing semi-structured interviews with nine (9) key industry players consists of few Shariah auditors, heads of Shariah audit, Shariah committee, and Chief of Shariah officer. Data gathered from the interviews have been transcribed and analyzed using Atlas.ti. The findings from the interview provide interesting mixed views in the sense that both parties have their justifications to support their arguments based on experience and observation. However, considering the current practices by the Islamic banking industry, it could be inferred that the Malaysian Islamic banking industry is not ready to exercise the ESA practices. The future study may consider other views from other relevant parties such as the regulator and external auditor to produce a more solid and robust result. This study aimed to identify the most important challenges facing auditors when measuring fair value FVMs from three axes, namely identifying which challenges are most influencing auditors to direct attention towards them, and revealing the extent to which the inherent auditing risks are affected by fair value evaluation estimates. The third axis of this study raises discussions about the reliability of audit evidence relating to fair value and assures that disclosed and recognized fair values are guiding values. The field study was applied to a sample of external auditors in the West Bank, where the researcher used the descriptive analytical approach in the field side and used the inductive approach to test the study hypotheses.
