The free motion of an undamped pendulum-type vibration absorber is studied on the basis of approximate nonlinear equations of motion. It is shown that this type of mechanical system exhibits the phenomenon of auto parametric excitation; a type of “instability” which cannot be accounted for on the basis of the linearized system. Complete energy transfer between modes is shown to occur when the beam frequency is twice the simple pendulum frequency. On the basis of a numerical solution, approximately 150 cycles of the beam oscillation take place during a single cycle of energy interchange.

It is usual in literature that power sharing among grid-forming sources of an isolated microgrid obeys their energy rating, instead of economic agreements between stakeholders, and circulating energy among them is usually avoided. However, these energy interchanges make strong sense and classical power sharing methods must be reformulated in the context of prosumer-based microgrids. This paper proposes a secondary control method for a prosumer-based low-voltage nanogrid that allows for energy interchange between prosumers, where storage systems, together with PV generators, are the controllable grid-forming sources. A power flow technique adapted to islanded microgrids is used for secondary control algorithm and the whole hierarchical control strategy for the prosumer converter is simulated and validated. This hierarchical control consists of three stages: tertiary control plans the energy interchange among prosumers, secondary obtains different voltage and power setpoints for each of the grid-forming sources, and, finally, primary control guarantees stable voltage and frequency values within the nanogrid with droop rules. Inner control loops for the power converter are also defined to track setpoints and assure stable performance. Simulation tests are carried out, which prove the stability of the proposed methods and the accuracy of the setpoint tracking.

Abstract This 26th annual symposium again showcases a world-wide musical genre in a regional setting with local performers. Texas Blues has emanated from a pantheon of talented artists beginning in the earliest days of Roots and Blues music to the present day, and Austin has become the epicenter of this talent and music. With legendary classic blues musicians from the early 2oth century to emerging younger musicians who re-energize and re-invent this uniquely American musical genre, to legendary music labels and venues like Antone’s which continue to engage blues music artists of all ages, Austin continues to be the home of Texas Blues. Lifetime Achievement Award -winning 89-year-young, Miss Lavelle White epitomizes the resilience and energy interchange of both the performer and the music, and their mutual contribution to longevity and continued engagement. Still performing after 70 years, she has influenced generations of younger prominent blues performers and continues to appear weekly at local blues mecca Antone’s along with her Grammy Award winning band and is preparing her fourth album release. This session will celebrate her music, her artistry, and her continued success as an older blues performer. A visit to a local blues venue later in the evening will allow for a true appreciation of the blues music scene in Austin.


In previous papers of this series the problem of energy interchange between a gas atom and a solid has been discussed for the case when the gas atom makes a transition between two adsorbed states or between an adsorbed state and a free state. In this paper we shall discuss the case of a transition between two free states and apply the results to the determination of the thermal accommodation coefficient. In recent years a number of theoretical papers on this subject have appeared, following the new and accurate experimental work of Roberts, who worked with helium and neon on tungsten. The authors, however, neglect, or only roughly take into account, the attractive field which is known to exist between the solid and the gas; the fact that atoms become adsorbed on the surface is clear evidence of the existence of such a field. In this paper we shall suppose that the interaction potentials between solid and gas atom can be represented by a Morse potential function, for it has the right characteristics; in that it is attractive at large distances and repulsive at small ones, and has a minimum in between. The formulae of this paper are accordingly more general than previous ones and contain them as special cases. They are applicable to experimental results such as those of neon on tungsten for which earlier theories would not be adequate.

This work addresses the analogy between the speed of sound of a viscous, barotropic, and irrotational fluid and the equation of motion for a non-massive field in a curved manifold. It will be shown that the presence of viscosity implies the introduction, into the equation of motion of the gravitational analogue, of a source term which entails the flow of energy from the non-massive field to the curvature of the spacetime manifold. The stress–energy tensor is also computed and it is found not to be constant, which is consistent with such energy interchange.
