Majority of the indigenous people who are the original inhabitants in Malaysia inhibit the remote area of tropical forest which is rich in natural resources. Their lives are separated from the outside community due to several factors such as geography, low literacy, negative perceptions of the surrounding community, and the closed-door attitude of the indigenous people. Consistent preaching activities have changed the faith of the indigenous people from animism orientation towards believing in the Oneness of God. The practice of Islam as a way of life in the lives of indigenous peoples is found to be difficult to practice because the fiqh approach presented to them does not celebrate their local condition. In this regard, this study will examine the socio-cultural isolation of indigenous peoples and their impact on the interpretation of Islamic law. To achieve this objective, the researchers have applied the library research method by referring to the literatures related to the discussion of Islamic scholars in various disciplines of fiqh and usūl al-fiqh. The research found that there is rukhsah and taysir approach given to isolated people as well as with local background to facilitate the religious affairs of the indigenous people. Abstrak Majoriti masyarakat Orang Asli yang merupakan penduduk asal di semenanjung Malaysia mendiami kawasan pedalaman di hutan hujan tropika yang kaya dengan khazanah alam. Kehidupan mereka terasing daripada masyarakat luar disebabkan beberapa faktor seperti geografi, kadar literasi yang rendah, pandangan negatif masyarakat sekitar dan sikap tertutup masyarakat Orang Asli. Gerakan dakwah yang dijalankan secara konsisten telah membawa perubahan kepercayaan sebahagian masyarakat Orang Asli daripada berorientasikan animisme kepada mempercayai Tuhan yang Esa. Pengamalan Islam sebagai cara hidup dalam kehidupan masyarakat Orang Asli didapati agak sukar untuk dipraktikkan lantaran pendekatan fiqh yang disampaikan kepada mereka tidak meraikan suasana setempat mereka. Sehubungan itu, kajian ini akan meneliti keadaan isolasi sosio-budaya masyarakat Orang Asli dan kesannya terhadap pentafsiran hukum Islam. Bagi mencapai objektif tersebut, pengkaji menggunakan kajian kepustakaan sepenuhnya dengan menelusuri literatur berkaitan dengan perbincangan sarjana Islam dalam pelbagai disiplin ilmu fiqh dan usul fiqh. Hasil kajian mendapati terdapat rukhsah dan pendekatan taysir diberikan kepada mereka yang hidup terasing serta berlatar belakang budaya setempat bagi memudahkan urusan keagamaan masyarakat Orang Asli.

This poster presents a pilot study that analyzed a small corpus of informed consent forms used in research with children, adolescents, and adult early readers using Coh-Metrix, a readability measurement tool. Recommendations for increasing readability of consent forms in order to improve the informed consent process are also provided. Cette affiche présente une étude pilote qui a analysé un corpus restreint de formulaires de consentement éclairé utilisés dans la recherche avec les enfants, les adolescents et les lecteurs précoces adultes,  utilisant Coh-Metrix, un outil de mesure de la lisibilité. Nous fournissons également des recommandations pour augmenter la lisibilité des formulaires de consentement afin d'améliorer le processus de consentement éclairé.

Foreign aid has been the subject of much examination and research ever since it entered the economic armamentarium approximately 45 years ago. This was the time when the Second World War had successfully ended for the Allies in the defeat of Germany and Japan. However, a new enemy, the Soviet Union, had materialized at the end of the conflict. To counter the threat from the East, the United States undertook the implementation of the Marshal Plan, which was extremely successful in rebuilding and revitalizing a shattered Western Europe. Aid had made its impact. The book under review is by three well-known economists and is the outcome of a study sponsored by the Department of State and the United States Agency for International Development. The major objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of assistance, i.e., aid, on economic development. This evaluation however, was to be based on the existing literature on the subject. The book has five major parts: Part One deals with development thought and development assistance; Part Two looks at the relationship between donors and recipients; Part Three evaluates the use of aid by sector; Part Four presents country case-studies; and Part Five synthesizes the lessons from development assistance. Part One of the book is very informative in that it summarises very concisely the theoretical underpinnings of the aid process. In the beginning, aid was thought to be the answer to underdevelopment which could be achieved by a transfer of capital from the rich to the poor. This approach, however, did not succeed as it was simplistic. Capital transfers were not sufficient in themselves to bring about development, as research in this area came to reveal. The development process is a complicated one, with inputs from all sectors of the economy. Thus, it came to be recognized that factors such as low literacy rates, poor health facilities, and lack of social infrastructure are also responsible for economic backwardness. Part One of the book, therefore, sums up appropriately the various trends in development thought. This is important because the book deals primarily with the issue of the effectiveness of aid as a catalyst to further economic development.

Recent reports about access to justice have focused on issues of affordability, with little reference to the differences of equity-seeking groups. They have tended to recommend “generic” solutions intended to help people represent themselves better and to access limited legal services that fail to consider characteristics that exclude people from using them effectively. The author argues that if factors such as low literacy or living in remote areas are not taken into account, generic solutions run the risk of perpetuating exclusion rather than increasing access to justice.       Des rapports sur l’accès à la justice qui ont été publiés récemment s’intéressent principalement à la question de la capacité de payer et s’attardent peu aux différences au sein des groupes en quête d’équité. Ils tendent à recommander des solutions « génériques » pour aider les justiciables à mieux se représenter eux‑mêmes et à jouir d’un accès à des services juridiques limités qui ne tiennent pas compte des facteurs qui empêchent les gens d’utiliser ces services efficacement. L’auteure plaide que si des facteurs tels qu’une faible littératie ou le fait de résider dans une collectivité éloignée ne sont pas pris en compte, les solutions génériques risquent de perpétuer l’exclusion plutôt que d’améliorer l’accès à la justice.

This systematic review aims to explore the effect of NGSS on students’ academic excellence. Specifically, considering increased cultural diversity, it is appropriate to identify student’s science-related values, respectful features of teachers’ cultural competence, and underlying challenges and detect in what ways these objectives are addressed by NGSS. Exploring the phenomena of effects, the qualitative evidence is collected. The sample consists of 52 academic entries (empirical researches and case studies) that shed light on the researched question. Summarized data is processed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that modern students possess such science-related values as social presence, decreased power distance with tutors, simplicity of learning process, multitasking, universal accessibility of learning instruments, readiness to work with big data, readiness to use online software and tools. Simultaneously, teachers are expected to have such cultural competencies as cultural sensitivity, online mentoring, gut feeling about the proper power distance, and social presence. The lack of these competencies results in the emergence of various challenges in an educational setting.

AbstractPurpose: Some universal accessibility practitioners have voiced that they experience a mismatch in the research focus and the need for knowledge within specialized problem domains. This study thus set out to identify the balance of research into the main areas of accessibility, the impact of this research, and how the research profile varies over time and across geographical regions. Method: All UAIS papers indexed in Scopus were analysed using bibliometric methods. The WCAG taxonomy of accessibility was used for the analysis, namely perceivable, operable, and understandable. Results: The results confirm the expectation that research into visual impairment has received more attention than papers addressing operable and understandable. Although papers focussing on understandable made up the smallest group, papers in this group attracted more citations. Funded research attracted fewer citations than research without funding. The breakdown of research efforts appears consistent over time and across different geographical regions. Researchers in Europe and North America have been active throughout the last two decades, while Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Middle East became active in during the last five years. There is also seemingly a growing trend of out-of-scope papers. Conclusions: Based on the findings, several recommendations are proposed to the UAIS editorial board.
