Piezoelectric cantilevered beams have been widely used as vibration-based energy harvesters. Nevertheless, these devices have a narrow frequency band and if the excitation is slightly different there is a significant drop in the level of power generated. To handle this problem, the present investigation proposes the use of an array of piezoelectric cantilevered beams connected by springs as a broadband vibration-based energy harvester. The equations for the voltage and power output of the system are derived based on the analytical solution of the piezoelectric cantilevered energy harvester with Euler-Bernoulli beam assumptions. To study the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed system, the results are compared with those of an array of disconnected beams (with no springs). The analytical model is validated with experimental measurements of three bimorph beams with and without springs. The results show that connecting the array of beams with springs allows increasing the frequency band of operation and increasing the amount of power generated.

Progressive short waves with a narrow frequency band are known to be accompanied by long set-down waves travelling with the groups. In finite depth, scattering of short waves by a large structure or a varying coastline can radiate free long waves which propagate faster than the incident set-down. In a partially enclosed harbour attacked by short waves through the entrance, such free long waves can further resonate the natural modes of the harbour basin. In this paper an asymptotic theory is presented for a harbour whose horizontal dimensions are much greater than the entrance width, which is in turn much wider than the short wavelength.

Rational approximations for fractional order systems are discussed in this paper. A fix-pole method is derived whereby a fractional order system is efficiently approximated by a low order integer system via simple algebraic algorithms. An adjacent congruent triangle (ACT) criterion is presented to analyze our method and compare it with existing results in a unified framework. The proposed fix-pole method has a trade-off that sacrifices partly the fitting error in exchange for simple approximations of complicated fractional order systems. The quality of the fix-pole approximations can be improved to be acceptable in practical or numerical implementations by narrowing the fitting frequency band. Finally, numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of our methods.
