Recent findings on wall-bounded turbulence have prompted a new impetus for modelling development to capture and resolve the Reynolds-number-dependent influence of outer flow on near-wall turbulence in terms of the ‘foot-printing’ of the large-scale coherent structures and the scale-interaction associated ‘modulation’. We develop a two-scale method to couple a locally embedded near-wall fine-mesh direct numerical simulation (DNS) block with a global coarser mesh domain. The influence of the large-scale structures on the local fine-mesh block is captured by a scale-dependent coarse–fine domain interface treatment. The coarse-mesh resolved disturbances are directly exchanged across the interface, while only the fine-mesh resolved fluctuations around the coarse-mesh resolved variables are subject to periodic conditions in the streamwise and spanwise directions. The global near-wall coarse-mesh region outside the local fine-mesh block is governed by the augmented flow governing equations with forcing source terms generated by upscaling the space–time-averaged fine-mesh solution. The validity and effectiveness of the method are examined for canonical incompressible channel flows at several Reynolds numbers. The mean statistics and energy spectra are in good agreement with the corresponding full DNS data. The results clearly illustrate the ‘foot-printing’ and ‘modulation’ in the local fine-mesh block. Noteworthy also is that neither spectral-gap nor scale-separation is assumed, and a smooth overlap between the global-domain and the local-domain energy spectra is observed. It is shown that the mesh-count scaling with Reynolds number is potentially reduced from $O(R{e^2})$ for the conventional fully wall-resolved large-eddy simulation (LES) to $O(Re)$ for the present locally embedded two-scale LES.

Anticommutator Green’s functions and energy spectra of fullerene C80, endohedral fullerenes Lu3N@С80 and Y3N@С80 with the Ih symmetry groups have been obtained in an analytical form within the Hubbard model and static fluctuation approximation. The energy states have been classified using the methods of group theory, and the allowed transitions in the energy spectra of molecules C80, Lu3N@С80 and Y3N@С80have been determined. On the basis of these spectra, an interpretation of experimentally observed optical absorption bands endohedral fullerenes Lu3N@С80 and Y3N@С80.

Successful transition of synchrotron-based microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) from pre-clinical animal studies to human trials is dependent upon ensuring that there are sufficient and adequate measures in place for quality assurance purposes. Transmission detectors provide researchers and clinicians with a real-time quality assurance and beam-monitoring instrument to ensure safe and accurate dose delivery. In this work, the effect of transmission detectors of different thicknesses (10 and 375 µm) upon the photon energy spectra and dose deposition of spatially fractionated synchrotron radiation is quantified experimentally and by means of a dedicated Geant4 simulation study. The simulation and experimental results confirm that the presence of the 375 µm thick transmission detector results in an approximately 1–6% decrease in broad-beam and microbeam peak dose. The capability to account for the reduction in dose and change to the peak-to-valley dose ratio justifies the use of transmission detectors as thick as 375 µm in MRT provided that treatment planning systems are able to account for their presence. The simulation and experimental results confirm that the presence of the 10 µm thick transmission detector shows a negligible impact (<0.5%) on the photon energy spectra, dose delivery and microbeam structure for both broad-beam and microbeam cases. Whilst the use of 375 µm thick detectors would certainly be appropriate, based upon the idea of best practice the authors recommend that 10 µm thick transmission detectors of this sort be utilized as a real-time quality assurance and beam-monitoring tool during MRT.

Based on the calculations from the first principles, we obtained the distributions of valence electron densities and electron energy spectra for a CdS film with different oxygen concentrations. According to the results of calculations, it is established that during the adsorption of oxygen atoms on the surface of CdS, oxygen taking electrons from the surface atoms of the CdS film, increases its catalytic activity. The oxygen concentration should not exceed 12.5%.

The magnetic and transport properties of pulsed laser-deposited Co100−x–Cux thin films were tailored through their nano-morphology and composition by controlling for the deposition geometry, namely normal or oblique deposition, and their Cu content. All films were composed of an amorphous Co matrix and a textured growth of Cu nanocrystals, whose presence and size d increased as x increased. For x = 50, all films were superparamagnetic, regardless of deposition geometry. The normally deposited films showed no in-plane magnetic anisotropy. On the contrary, controllable in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in both direction and magnitude was generated in the obliquely deposited films. The magnetic anisotropy field Hk remained constant for x = 0, 5 and 10, Hk ≈ 35 kAm−1, and decreased to 28 and 26 kAm−1 for x = 20 and 30, respectively. This anisotropy had a magnetostatic origin due to a tilted nano-sheet morphology. In the normally deposited films, the coercive field Hc increased when x increased, from 200 (x = 0) to 1100 Am−1 (x = 30). In contrast, in obliquely deposited films, Hc decreased from 1500 (x = 0) to 100 Am−1 (x = 30) as x increased. Activation energy spectra corresponding to structural relaxation phenomena in obliquely deposited films were obtained from transport property measurements. They revealed two peaks, which also depended on their nano-morphology and composition.

Mixed-symmetry states of 92Zr and 94Mo isotopes are investigated with the use of the collective models, Interacting Boson Model-2 (IBM-2) and Quasiparticle Phonon Model (QPM). The energy spectra and electromagnetic transition rates for these isotopes are calculated. The results of IBM-2 and QPM are compared with available experimental data. We have obtained a satisfactory agreement, and IBM-2 gives a better description. In these isotopes, we observe a few states having a mixed symmetry such as 2+2, 2+3, 3+1, and 1+s. It is found that these isotopes have a vibrational shape corresponding to the U(5) symmetry.

The energy spectrum of atmospheric horizontal motions has been extensively studied in observations and numerical simulations. Its canonical shape includes a transition from the -3 power law at synoptic scale to -5/3 power law at mesoscale. The transition is taking place at scales around 500 km that can be seen as the scale where energy associated with quasi-linear inertia-gravity waves exceeds the balanced (or Rossby wave) energy. In contrast to the horizontal spectrum, the spectrum of kinetic energy of vertical motions is poorly known since the vertical motion is not an observed quantity of the global observing system and vertical kinetic energy spectra from non-hydrostatic models are difficult to validate.

Traditionally, vertical velocities associated with the Rossby and gravity waves have been treated separately using the quasi-geostrophic omega equations and polarization relations for the stratified Boussinesq fluid in the (x,z) plane, respectively. In the tropics, the Rossby and gravity wave regimes are difficult to separate and their frequency gap, present in the extra-tropics, is filled with the Kelvin and mixed Rossby-gravity waves. A separate treatment of the Rossby and gravity wave regimes makes it challenging to quantify energies of their vertical motions and vertical momentum fluxes. A unified treatment and wave interactions is performed by high-resolution non-hydrostatic models but their understanding requires the toolkit of theory.

This contribution presents a unified framework for the derivation of vertical velocities of the Rossby and inertia-gravity waves and associated kinetic energy spectra. Expressions for the Rossby and gravity wave vertical velocities are derived using the normal-mode framework in the hydrostatic atmosphere that can be considered applicable up to the scale around 10 km. The derivation involves the analytical evaluation of divergence of the horizontal wind associated with the Rossby and inertia-gravity eigensolutions of the linearized primitive equations. The new framework is applied to the global analysis data of the ECMWF system. Results confirm that the tropical vertical kinetic energy spectra associated with inertia-gravity waves are on average indeed white. Deviations from the white spectrum are discussed for latitude and altitude bands.

The problem of spectral description of the nonlinear capillary waves on the fluid surface is discussed. Usually, three-wave nonlinear interactions are considered as a major factor determined by the energy spectrum of these waves in the kinetic wave turbulent regime. We demonstrate that four-wave interactions should be taken into account. In this case, there are two possible scenarios for the transfer of energy over the wave spectrum: kinetic and dynamic. The first is described by the averaged stochastic interaction of waves using the kinetic equation, while the second is described by dynamic equations written for discrete modes. In this article, we compare the time scales, spectral shapes, and other properties of both energy cascades, allowing them to be identified in an experiment.
