Acromegaly Quality of Life Questionnaire (AcroQoL) is a new disease-generated quality of life (QOL) questionnaire comprising 22 questions covering physical and psychological aspects of acromegaly and subdivided into “appearance” and “personal relations” categories. We have performed a cross-sectional study of QOL in 80 patients [43 male (mean age, 54.2 yr; range, 20–84); median GH, 0.93ng/ml (range, <0.3 to 23.7); IGF-I, 333.1 ng/ml (range, 47.7–899)] with acromegaly. In addition to AcroQoL, patients completed three generic QOL questionnaires: Psychological General Well-Being Schedule (PGWBS), EuroQol, and a signs and symptoms score (SSS). All three generic questionnaires confirmed impairment in QOL [mean scores: PGWBS, 69.6; EuroQol, visual analog scale, 66.4 (range, 20–100) and utility index, 0.7 (range, −0.07 to 0.92); and SSS, 12 (range, 0–27)]. There was no correlation between biochemical control and any measure of QOL. AcroQoL (57.3%; range, 18.2–93.2) correlated with PGWBS (r = 0.73; P < 0.0001); and in patients with active disease, AcroQoL-physical dimension correlated with SSS (r = −0.67; P < 0.0003). In all questionnaires, prior radiotherapy was associated with impaired QOL. In conclusion, these data underline the marked impact that acromegaly has on patients’ QOL and provide the first evidence validating AcroQoL against well-authenticated measures of QOL. This indicates the potential of AcroQoL as a patient-friendly measure of disease activity.

AbstractAdolescent pregnancy is a current problem in health systems around the world. In Ecuador, 2 of every 10 deliveries are of adolescents, being the country with the highest index in the region. The quality of life during pregnancy implies the effort so that the gestation process, involves the least impairment of autonomy. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out which characterized indicators of quality of life of a group of pregnant adolescents attended at the Gynecological and Obstetric Enrique C. Sotomayor Hospital, belonging to the Charity Board of Guayaquil. The Quality of Life Questionnaire on the Kindl Child and Adolescent Population, Spanish adaptation, and a semi-structured interview with questions centered on the six dimensions of the questionnaire were applied. Adolescents report having strength and energy in the process of pregnancy during this stage was the most frequent in terms of emotional well-being, although they describe feelings of loneliness, fear and insecurity that appeared in some moments. Inadequate family relationships, a self-esteem nuanced by an adequate attitude to face the future, identification is appreciated with their peers, at school they show fear of low grades. States of sadness and confidence in pregnancy are appreciated for having maintained an appropriate coping behavior.

Objective To examine the psychometric properties of the Urdu version of the Quality of Life Questionnaire for Physiological Pregnancy (QOL-GRAV). Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Obstetrics, Gynecology department of Sandeman Provincial Hospital, Quetta. The QOL-GRAV was translated into Urdu by using a forward-backward procedure. The test-retest reliability was assessed through Cronbach’s alpha reliability analysis. The validity of the translated questionnaire was constructed by using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) through principal axis factoring extraction and Oblique rotation with Kaiser Normalization. SPSS v 20.0 was used for data analysis with p<0.05 as significant. Results The Urdu version of the questionnaire (QOL-GRAV-U) exhibited acceptable alpha values of 0.780 (Test) and 0.812 (Retest) at two-time points with an overall value of 0.790 (field test). All items of the QOL-GRAV-U showed good stability with Intraclass Correlation Coefficient values of > 0.80. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of sampling adequacy for the factor analysis was 0.812. Barlett’s Test of Sphericity was significant (Chi-square = 1032.43; p < 0.05) revealing relationships of the data and suitability of EFA. Three factors explaining the total variance of 65% were extracted whereby loading values for all nine constructs were acceptable (> 0.40).  Conclusion The results of this study conclude that the translated version of QOL-GRAV-U is a valid and reliable instrument for the assessment of QoL for pregnant women in regions where Urdu is a prime language of communication. The diagnosis of cancer and its treatment have an incomparable impact on a patient’s life. In the early postoperative stages after the surgical treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), functions and well-being are limited, which leads to a fundamental decline of the quality of life (QoL). To date, no studies have been performed that focus on the development of special aspects during the time of the in-patient stay of OSCC patients. With the results of this cross-sectional study, we are able to identify those patients who tend to require special support. This cross-sectional study determined the postoperative QoL with a questionnaire (QU) that was handed out twice to OSCC patients after surgery during their inpatient stay. The questions were based on the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC)’s Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ)-C30 and QLQ-H&N35. In our study, we found that for postoperative OSCC patients, eating, swallowing and speech were influenced the most. After decannulation, tracheotomy showed no impact on functions. Social contact was impaired at both timepoints. Especially female patients consider themselves to be more impaired on the scale of social contact. QoL should be checked with a standardized QU as an established tool during hospitalization in every oncology department. Only this procedure can pinpoint those patients who have struggles with their surgical outcome and need more assistance.

Objectives: To assess Quality of Life (QOL), and its associated factors between asthmatic children and their caregivers, and determine the correlation between QOL of patients and caregivers, at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Jeddah. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among eligible participants who attended Pediatric Pulmonology Outpatient Clinic of KAUH, during 2016/2017. A data collection sheet was used. The standardized Arabic version of Pediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAQLQ) for children aged 7 - 17 years was completed. The caregiver who accompanied the child fulfilled the Pediatric Asthma Caregiver’s Quality of Life Questionnaire (PACQLQ). Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed. Results: QOL scores were reduced among asthmatic children who had other type of allergy, or a family history of allergies. Uncontrolled management of asthma presented by frequent waking-up at night, frequent wheezes, visiting Emergency Rooms (ER), or hospital admission was associated with poor QOL of both asthmatic children and their caregivers. There is a positive correlation between child symptoms domain of PAQLQ and emotional domain of PACQLQ of their caregivers. Conclusion: Uncontrolled asthma was associated with poor QOL of asthmatic child and caregivers. Better management of asthma is recommended to improve their QOL. Objective: The cross-sectional study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Functional Assessment of Multiple Sclerosis (FAMS) Spanish version and its use in measuring quality of life (QOL) of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients in Spain. Methods: The FAMS is a factorially derived self-report scale designed to assess six primary aspects of QOL of patients with MS: Mobility, Symptoms, Emotional Well-Being, General Contentment, Thinking and Fatigue, and Family/Social Well-Being. Its Spanish translated version was used to assess QOL of 625 MS patients recruited in an outpatient clinic setting from 58 hospitals in Spain. Internal consistency of the Spanish FAMS was evaluated. Multiple regression analyses were performed to identify significant predictors from demographic, clinical and treatment characteristics, and Kurtzke Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores in predicting FAMS scale scores. Results: Most of the patients are females (66%), and 74% were of the relapsing-remitting (RR) clinical subtype. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were high (range=0.78-0.96), indicating subscale homogeneity comparable to that of the original English version. Linear multivariate regression analyses revealed that the EDSS is a dominant variable in predicting all the FAMS subscales, especially mobility (R2=0.51) and the total scores. Conclusions: The Spanish FAMS is a psychometrically valid instrument that allows clinicians and clinical researchers the ability to measure the QOL concerns of MS patients in Spain.
