The morphology of the pleopods, uropods and telson of the tube-dwelling shrimp Callianassa subterranea have been studied using dissection microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The kinematics of these appendages were examined by motion analysis of macro-video recordings of ventilating shrimps in transparent artificial burrows. The pleopods show the usual crustacean biramous anatomy, but all segments are rostro-caudally flattened. The protopodite bears a triangular medially oriented endopodite and a scoop-shaped exopodite. The contralateral endopodites are linked by the appendix interna, ensuring a perfect phase relationship between contralateral pleopods. The outer rims of the exopodites are fringed with long fern-leaf-like plumose setae bearing flattened setules. These setae have very mobile joints and can be turned caudally. The slits between contralateral endopodites have rims of leaf-like setae as well. Setae of the same leaf-like type fringe the uropods, but these are non-motile. The telson has a narrow fringe of leaf-like setae, locally interrupted by long mechanoreceptory setae. A shrimp, wandering through the burrow or resting, holds its pleopods against the abdomen with the exopodites and their setal fringes retracted medially. The uropods are folded medially as well, probably to reduce the shrimp's drag. During ventilation, the uropods are extended against the tube wall, leaving only a small opening for flow ventral from the telson, and the pleopods beat at a frequency of approximately 1 Hz (0.9+/-0.2 Hz). Fourier analysis of pleopod kinematics showed that the motion pattern of the first flow-generating pleopod pair (PP1) consisted mainly of the first harmonic (75 %) and to a lesser extent of the third harmonic (20 %), resulting in almost perfect sinusoidal motion. The motion patterns of PP2 and PP3 could be modelled by assigning pure sinusoids with a 120 degrees phase shift and a rostro-caudal ranking to the three pairs of pleopods.

The ultrafast third-order optical nonlinearity of c-plane GaN crystal, excited by ultrashort (fs) high-repetition-rate laser pulses at 1550 nm, wavelength important for optical communications, is investigated for the first time by optical third-harmonic generation in non-phase-matching conditions. As the thermo-optic effect that can arise in the sample by cumulative thermal effects induced by high-repetition-rate laser pulses cannot be responsible for the third-harmonic generation, the ultrafast nonlinear optical effect of solely electronic origin is the only one involved in this process. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of GaN crystal responsible for the third-harmonic generation process, an important indicative parameter for the potential use of this material in ultrafast photonic functionalities, is determined.

Abstract One advantage of multi-phase machines is the possibility to use the third harmonic of the rotor flux for additional torque generation. This effect can be maximised for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSM) with a high third harmonic content in the magnet flux. This paper discusses the effects of third harmonic current injection (THCI) on a five-phase PMSM with a conventional magnet shape depending on saturation. The effects of THCI in five-phase machines are shown in a 2D FEM model in Ansys Maxwell verified by measurement results. The results of the FEM model are analytically analysed using the Park model. It is shown in simulation and measurement that the torque improvement by THCI increases significantly with the saturation level, as the amplitude of the third harmonic flux linkage increases with the saturation level but the phase shift of the rotor flux linkage has to be considered. This paper gives a detailed analysis of saturation mechanisms of PMSM, which can be used for optimizing the efficiency in operating points of high saturations, without using special magnet shapes.

This article proposes an acoustic nonlinear approach combined with the time reversal technique to image cracks in long bones. In this method, the scattered ultrasound generated from the crack is recorded, and the third harmonic nonlinear component of the ultrasonic signal is used to reconstruct an image of the crack by the time reversal process. Numerical simulations are performed to examine the validity of this approach. The fatigue long bone is modeled as a hollow cylinder with a crack of 1, 0.1, and 0.225 mm in axial, radial and circumferential directions respectively. A broadband 500 kHz ultrasonic signal is used as the exciting signal, and the extended three-dimensional Preisach-Mayergoyz model is used to describe the nonclassical nonlinear dynamics of the crack. Time reversal is carried out by using the filtered third harmonic component. The localization capability depends on the radial depth of the crack.

Classifying the motion pattern of marine targets is of important significance to promote target surveillance and management efficiency of marine area and to guarantee sea route safety. This paper proposes a moving target classification algorithm model based on channel extraction-segmentation-LCSCA-lp norm minimization. The algorithm firstly analyzes the entire distribution of channels in specific region, and defines the categories of potential ship motion patterns; on this basis, through secondary segmentation processing method, it obtains several line segment trajectories as training sample sets, to improve the accuracy of classification algorithm; then, it further uses the Leastsquares Cubic Spline Curves Approximation (LCSCA) technology to represent the training sample sets, and builds a motion pattern classification sample dictionary; finally, it uses lp norm minimized sparse representation classification model to realize the classification of motion patterns. The verification experiment based on real spatial-temporal trajectory dataset indicates that, this method can effectively realize the motion pattern classification of marine targets, and shows better time performance and classification accuracy than other representative classification methods.
