Over the years the role of the frame in American passenger cars has changed greatly. More recently, the virtue of the frame with respect to collision damage and passenger safety is receiving increasing attention. After a short discussion of frame function, the author explores the evolution of the frame as influenced by major changes in other vehicle components. Special laboratory equipment for durability testing and analysis of structures is complemented by a machine for crushing vehicles and components to simulate the effects of collisions. This permits a step-by-step analysis and provides data for design improvement.

Background. International recommendations for the control of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic emphasize the central role of laboratory testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the etiological agent, at scale. The availability of testing reagents, laboratory equipment and qualified staff are important bottlenecks to achieving this. Elsewhere, pooled testing (i.e. combining multiple samples in the same reaction) has been suggested to increase testing capacities in the pandemic period. Methods. We discuss our experience with SARS-CoV-2 pooled testing using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) on the Kenyan Coast. Results. In mid-May, 2020, our RT-PCR testing capacity for SARS-CoV-2 was improved by ~100% as a result of adoption of a six-sample pooled testing strategy. This was accompanied with a concomitant saving of ~50% of SARS-CoV-2 laboratory test kits at both the RNA extraction and RT-PCR stages. However, pooled testing came with a slight decline of test sensitivity. The RT-PCR cycle threshold value (ΔCt) was ~1.59 higher for samples tested in pools compared to samples tested singly. Conclusions. Pooled testing is a useful strategy to increase SARS-CoV-2 laboratory testing capacity especially in low-income settings.

The global outbreak of the COVID-19 and the measures taken, disrupted fundamentally economies around the world. Almost all sectors were affected. The experts have long emphasised the Czech economy’s dependence on the automotive industry. Car producers and companies linked to them have been loaded by severe difficulties after the pandemic outbreak. The article shows one of the constructive ways how to forecast a change in the passenger cars production in the Czech Republic in 2020. Metodologically we lean on a procedure of the fuzzy approach. The prediction itself cannot be derived from the series of historical data of the variables that are related to the target output variable as shown in the fuzzy prediction of GDP for 2018 by this author. Due to the extreme situation caused by pandemic outbreak, the role of expert predictions come intensively into play with their outcomes becoming the set of input data to the fuzzy model. The result of the fuzzy forcast of a change in the cars production in CZ for 2020 shows a greater drop than the official statistical model claims.

<p>In the presented work, we performed an integrated techno-environmental assessment of hydrogen production from woody biomass gasification, combined with CO<sub>2</sub> capture and storage (CCS). We have included three different types of gasification technologies for syngas production. CO<sub>2</sub> is captured from the syngas with conventional amine-based technology. Based on our integrated approach linking detailed process simulation with Life Cycle Assessment, we are able to quantify benefits and potential trade-offs of a wide range of process configurations from both technical and environmental perspectives in a consistent way. We have also performed a comparative evaluation of hydrogen use in fuel cell electric vehicles (passenger cars and freight trucks), to investigate the role of hydrogen in decarbonizing the transport sector.</p>

This chapter provides an understanding of the fundamental principles behind key management. We consider the typical stages in the lifecycle of a cryptographic key and then review each of these stages in some detail. We discuss the choosing of key lengths and look at different techniques for key generation, including key derivation and generation from components. We then look at different techniques for key establishment, including the use of key hierarchies, key wrapping, and quantum key establishment. We then look at key storage and discuss the role of hardware security modules. We also consider key separation, key change, and key destruction, before closing with a short discussion on governance of key management.


During 1991-2004 years, International Workshop on the Future of Electronic Power Processing and Conversion (FEPPCON) held four times with the support of IEEE Power Electronics Society. The main purpose is to outline the possibilities of development in different fields during the next period as a result of the discussions. At the last meeting held in Italy, the tendency to increase the role of Power Electronics during the next 25-30 years in the processes of energy conversion has been confirmed (Blaabjerg, 2005). Special attention is paid to the role of Power Electronics at a system energy conversion level, because it is not in the position to dictate the trends in the development of this level. Nevertheless, without the power electronics tools, future serious achievements in power processing are impossible. Therefore, the power electronics implantation at a system level at a system energy conversion level is an issue of the efforts of the specialists in this field (Agrawal, 2001). This, of course, imposes also some changes and adaptation towards Power electronics role also in the process of schooling of specialists paying attention mainly to multidisciplinary of Power Electronics. For example, a necessity of further tuition in electrochemistry, mechanics, physics (especially electromagnetic and thermal processes), etc, is outlined. Remote access to complex power electronics laboratory equipment and the possibility of remotely driving experiments and measurement is represented (Rodriguez, 2009). Power Electronics takes a significant part in the following systems: Generic Systems; Energy Storage; Power Systems, including Alternative Energy Supply; Automotive Systems (Bose, 2009).

AbstractThe Panel Report in Ukraine–Passenger Cars provides an opportunity to revisit an old debate over the role of safeguard measures in the WTO. With regard to the legal findings, the Panel followed the established jurisprudence in this area, and found a number of violations of the Safeguards Agreement. With regard to the economics, we delve more deeply into the economic and political background of the safeguards investigation. Ukraine was hit by the economic crisis shortly after its WTO accession that significantly liberalized import tariffs on passenger cars. Next, we offer a de novo look at the injury and causation issues in this case, and discuss the challenges of an industry reliant on offshored production that sees a safeguard as a mechanism to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) for production. We conclude with an assessment of the operation of the WTO's safeguards regime, along with some tentative suggestions for reform. Overall, our examination of the economic analysis by the investigating authority and the legal review by the WTO Panel raises questions about particular aspects of the domestic and WTO processes, but concludes that the system worked well in this case.
