Determination of Dry Matter Content and Basic Density of Norway Spruce by near Infrared Reflectance and Transmittance Spectroscopy

The purpose of the study was to investigate the feasibility of using near infrared (NTR) spectroscopy in reflectance and transmittance modes for the determination of dry matter content and basic density of Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst). The 169 samples varied in moisture content (below fibre saturation, green and fully saturated) and in form (solid wood and shavings). Calibration models were produced using partial least squares regression and the resulting models were validated using test sets. The calibration models for dry matter content showed good predictive ability. The root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) was 1–2% for dry matter contents ranging between 35 and 95%, corresponding to a relative error between 1 and 6%. Calibration models for basic density were less precise, having RMSEP values between 15 and 26 kg m−3 for basic density values ranging from 313 to 495 kg m−3 (relative error 3–8%). The reason for the limited predictive ability of the basic density models is probably that the part of each sample scanned with NIR spectroscopy was not representative of the whole sample of which the basic density had been determined by the reference method. No marked differences in the predictive ability of calibration models were found between reflectance and transmittance.

The acceptability of near infrared (NIR) transmission spectroscopy for the prediction of six quality factors of apples (firmness, refractive index, pH, titratable acid, dry matter and alcohol insoluble solids content) was investigated. The effects of storage conditions, cultivars and season on the accuracy of the NIR transmission method were also studied during the experiment. The accuracy of the calibration of all investigated parameters decreased during storage. The alteration of the characteristics of the spectra is possibly due to changes in the chemical composition and structure of apples between September and April. The calibration method was improved by developing a separate calibration for each cultivar per year. The calibrations of the different parameters are season-dependent except for the dry matter content. Using outlier diagnostics, the prediction accuracy can be generally improved by about 10%. The coefficient of variation for each parameter is compatible with the relative standard deviation for the reference methods except for the titratable acid content, showing the applicability of NIR transmission techniques. A relationship seems to exist between the maturity and the NIR transmission spectra of the apple.

<p>The dry matter is one of the main quality parameters of raw and processed potatoes. In the present study, the potential of utilizing high throughput commercially available NIR interactance systems for dry matter determination in whole unpeeled potato tubers is investigated. The performance of a 2D NIR interactance instrument was compared with that of a 1D NIR interactance instrument and a traditional underwater weight apparatus. A total of 114 tubers were assessed individually with both of the NIR instruments (760-1040 nm), the underwater weight and an external reference method (freeze drying). The 1D interactance instrument obtained better prediction results than what the 2D instrument could achieve (R<sup>2</sup>=0.95, RMSECV=0.91, and R<sup>2</sup>=0.83, RMSECV=1.65, respectively). The underwater weight obtained the highest explained variance (R<sup>2</sup>=0.97), but the estimation was biased by approximately 1.5% (by weight). The poorer prediction performance of the 2D NIR interactance system can be partly explained by the lower penetration depths of the light compared to the 1D NIR interactance systems.</p>

Relevance. Vertical farming – is a new and advanced direction in greenhouse vegetable cultivation. Expansion biodiversity of plants for vertical farming occur with help of green leafy vegetables. Plants of Lamiaceae family are well known as aromatic and medicinal plants with high content of substances with antioxidant activity. It allows use these plants as a base for the functional nutrition. Leafy parts the plants of Lamiaceae family may be used as aromatic and healthy additions to traditional foods, such as salads, soups and sauces.  Goal of the study: analysis the biochemical composition of leafy parts plants of Lamiaceaefamily, cultivated at the multi circle hydroponic construction. Materials and methods. 1) Plants: Monarda fistulosa L. (the breeding sample №5 U.P.), Monarda citriodora Cerv. ex Lag. (Simka variety), Melissa officinalisL. (Zhemchuzhina variety). 2) secondary metabolites: flavonoid glycoside linarozid and steroid glycoside moldstim. Methods. 1) cultivation of plants Lamiaceae family at the 5 circles hydroponic construction; 2) analytic methods: determination of dry matter content, determination of ascorbic acid content, determination sum of chlorophylls and carotenoids, determination sum of antioxidants; 3) statistical methods. Results. First experiment the cultivation of plants Lamiaceae family at the multi circle hydroponic construction was successful. Location of plants at different circles of hydroponic installation didn’t influence the content of dry matter, ascorbic acid and sum of chlorophylls in leafy parts of plants Monarda fistulosaL. The content of dry matter and sum of antioxidants in leafy parts of Monarda fistulosaL. plants of the first cutting is significantly higher than of other cuttings. So, we can recommend the leaves of Monarda fistulosa L. plants of the first cutting for the healthy additions in the scheme of the functional nutrition. Seed treatment with water solutions of secondary metabolites changed significantly the weight of leaves: it was increased in Monarda citriodoraCerv. ex Lag. and in Melissa officinalisL.

The fraction of extractable extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the shear sensitivity (kSS) are key parameters with respect to sludge dewatering, affecting the dry matter content of dewatered sludge and the dewatering rate and conditioner demand, respectively. Methods are described for determination of the two key parameters by use of the same laboratory test reactor. The implications of such characterisation with respect to dewatering are discussed based on examples of application to sludge processing and novel process development for sludge minimisation.
