In many clinical and scientific situations the optimal neuroimaging sequence may not be known prior to scanning and may differ for each individual being scanned, depending on the exact nature and location of abnormalities. Despite this, the standard approach to data acquisition, in such situations, is to specify the sequence of neuroimaging scans prior to data acquisition and to apply the same scans to all individuals. In this paper, we propose and illustrate an alternative approach, in which data would be analysed as it is acquired and used to choose the future scanning sequence: Active Acquisition. We propose three Active Acquisition scenarios based around multiple MRI modalities. In Scenario 1, we propose a simple use of near-real time analysis to decide whether to acquire more or higher resolution data, or acquire data with a different field-of-view. In Scenario 2, we simulate how multimodal MR data could be actively acquired and combined with a decision tree to classify a known outcome variable (in the simple example here, age). In Scenario 3, we simulate using Bayesian optimisation to actively search across multiple MRI modalities to find those which are most abnormal. These simulations suggest that by actively acquiring data, the scanning sequence can be adapted to each individual. We also consider the many outstanding practical and technical challenges involving normative data acquisition, MR physics, statistical modelling and clinical relevance. Despite these, we argue that Active Acquisition allows for potentially far more powerful, sensitive or rapid data acquisition, and may open up different perspectives on individual differences, clinical conditions, and biomarker discovery.

Equations for the passage-averaged flow in a cascade are used to derive the momentum integral equations governing the development of the wall boundary layer in turbomachines. Several existing methods of analysis are discussed and an alternative approach is given which is based on the passage-averaged momentum integral equations. The analysis leads to an anomaly in the prediction of the cross flow and to avoid this it is suggested that for the many-bladed cascade there should be a variation of the blade force through the boundary layer. This variation of the blade force can be included in the analysis as a force deficit integral. The growth of the wall boundary layer has been calculated by four methods and the predictions are compared with two sets of published experimental results for flow through inlet guide vanes.

IntroductionThe absence of a diagnostic test for acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is a major impediment in managing this serious childhood condition. ARF is an autoimmune condition triggered by infection with group A Streptococcus. It is the precursor to rheumatic heart disease (RHD), a leading cause of health inequity and premature mortality for Indigenous peoples of Australia, New Zealand and internationally.Methods and analysis‘Searching for a Technology-Driven Acute Rheumatic Fever Test’ (START) is a biomarker discovery study that aims to detect and test a biomarker signature that distinguishes ARF cases from non-ARF, and use systems biology and serology to better understand ARF pathogenesis. Eligible participants with ARF diagnosed by an expert clinical panel according to the 2015 Revised Jones Criteria, aged 5–30 years, will be recruited from three hospitals in Australia and New Zealand. Age, sex and ethnicity-matched individuals who are healthy or have non-ARF acute diagnoses or RHD, will be recruited as controls. In the discovery cohort, blood samples collected at baseline, and during convalescence in a subset, will be interrogated by comprehensive profiling to generate possible diagnostic biomarker signatures. A biomarker validation cohort will subsequently be used to test promising combinations of biomarkers. By defining the first biomarker signatures able to discriminate between ARF and other clinical conditions, the START study has the potential to transform the approach to ARF diagnosis and RHD prevention.Ethics and disseminationThe study has approval from the Northern Territory Department of Health and Menzies School of Health Research ethics committee and the New Zealand Health and Disability Ethics Committee. It will be conducted according to ethical standards for research involving Indigenous Australians and New Zealand Māori and Pacific Peoples. Indigenous investigators and governance groups will provide oversight of study processes and advise on cultural matters.

Among the many depictions of the Yellow Emperor that survive in a number of early Chinese texts, the historicized image of this purported ancient sage king has been accepted by many Chinese scholars as that of a historical figure and has greatly inspired their reconstruction of China’s remote past. In examining some of the extant Huangdi narratives, especially passages preserved in theDiscourses of the States[Guoyu],Records of the Grand Historian[Shiji], andRemaining Zhou Documents[Yi Zhoushu], this paper reveals a trend of historicizing an originally mythical Yellow Emperor presented in early Chinese writings. It also explores the historiographical reasoning behind such historicization and provides an alternative approach emphasizing the role of persuasion in the Huangdi narratives.

Ritter & Salamini (1996) presented a systematic account of two-point linkage analysis in allogamous diploid plant species. Vowden et al. (1995) described an alternative approach that is implemented in a computer program LINKEM. This paper describes how the latter approach has been extended to three-point linkage analysis, and implemented in a new program LINK3EM that is available from the authors. The essence of the approach is for the computer program to derive the appropriate form of analysis for a specific cross from its ‘knowledge’ of the most general type of cross that can arise. This avoids the need for programming specific codes for the many different types of cross that can arise. The program allows different locus orderings and parental phases to be compared. The Haldane or Kosambi map functions can be specified, although it is also possible to estimate all three pairwise recombination fractions without any assumed map function.

Research on outsourced product development has focused primarily on the motives behind firms’ decisions to outsource, with less attention paid to the outcomes of those decisions. The few existing academic studies have reported high failure rates, but there is little consensus as to what is meant by “project success” and “failure” and some do not define success at all. Such ambiguity makes comparisons difficult and hinders explanation of observed variation in project outcomes. This paper explores the many meanings of project success in outsourced product development, based on in-depth interviews of thirty design consultants and clients. After reviewing the merits and limitations of each metric, we propose that the client’s willingness to recommend the consultant may be a suitable outcome variable for assessing project outcomes and comparing success rates across diverse projects, companies, and industries. We present preliminary data that suggests client willingness to recommend varies widely and is multimodal in distribution. Finally, we identify several commonly encountered failure modes, i.e., sequences of events that generate discrepancies between client expectations and project deliverables, thereby producing client dissatisfaction.

The importance of allowing for the many different types of structural interaction that have an effect on the performance of light gauge members when used in practical situations is emphasized. A distinction is drawn between internal interactions involving the various plate elements of the steel profiles and external interactions involving the other components in the system. Although full-scale testing of representative systems can capture this behavior, the costs involved make this an impractical general basis for design; codified methods generally consider only isolated plates within members and isolated members within systems, thereby neglecting the potentially beneficial effects of both forms of interaction. Properly used, modern methods of numerical analysis offer the potential to systematically allow for both forms of interaction — provided the numerical models used have been adequately validated against suitable tests. The use of such an approach is explained and illustrated for three commonly used structural systems: roof purlins, floor beams, and columns in stud walls. In each case, it is shown that, provided sufficient care is taken, the numerical approach can yield accurate predictions of the observed test behavior. The subsequently generated large portfolio of numerical results can then provide clear insights into the exact nature of the various interactions and, thus, form the basis for more realistic design approaches that are both more accurate in their predictions and which lead to more economic designs. Building on this, modifying existing arrangements so as to yield superior performance through specific modifications is now possible. Two such examples, one in which improved interconnection between the components in a system is investigated and a second in which prestressing is shown to provide substantial enhancement for relatively small and simple changes, are presented.
