Sigma (σ) is a Greek letter that has become the statistical symbol and metric of process variation. Six sigma is a disciplined, customers focused process designed to help organizations to move towards the creation of near perfect products and services. Six sigma (6σ) increases quality by reducing variation, defects and costs. 6σ is used in almost all fields of human activity. 6σ has been considered a powerful business strategy that employs a well structured continuous improvement methodology to reduce process variability and drive out waste within the business processes using effective application of statistical tools and techniques. This article i) gives the general introduction about the concept of six sigma, ii) briefs about the two 6σ methodologies DMAIC and DMADV, which are most commonly used by the organizations to achieve 6σ performance level, iii) discusses some of the applications of these limits in reducing the process variability. Some remarks about the results of applications of 6σ, the future requirements and benefits of 6σ are also discussed.

Purpose This study aims to apply a Lean Six Sigma framework to support continuous improvement in the maritime industry (shipbuilding, logistics services and shipping companies) during COVID-19 pandemics. By applying the concepts of Lean Six Sigma and supply chain resilience, the most suitable continuous improvement method for the maritime industry is developed to maintain a resilient supply chain during COVID-19. Design/methodology/approach A specific shipbuilding, logistics services and shipping company in Indonesia is chosen as the research object. The Lean Six Sigma framework reveals the wastes through the supply chain resilience concept, and implements internal business processes to maintain optimal system performance. Findings The paper identifies important implementation aspects in applying Lean Six Sigma to shipbuilding, logistics services and shipping. The DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve and control) approach is applied to achieve supply chain resilience. Resilient measures are generated for the case companies to maximize performance during the pandemics. Practical implications This paper provides a new insight for integrating Lean Six Sigma and resilience strategies in the maritime industry during COVID-19 disruptions. The authors provide some insights to sustain the performance of the maritime industries under study. Originality/value This study is part of the first research in the maritime industry that focuses on continuous improvement during COVID-19 using Lean Six Sigma and supply chain resilience.

Selection Criteria for Six Sigma Projects in Slovenian Manufacturing CompaniesResearches reveal that successful six sigma implementation is related to proper six sigma project prioritisation and selection. This research is limited to the selection of six sigma projects in some manufacturing companies in Slovenia. The purpose of this study is to identify what criteria are considered for prioritisation and selection of six sigma projects and how six sigma projects are selected. A research sample is limited by the number of companies which have implemented six sigma so far. The results indicate that Slovenian manufacturing organisations tend to select six sigma projects based on criteria such as customer satisfaction, connection with a business strategy financial benefits, and growth of the organisation. Several tools and techniques such as quality cost analysis, brainstorming and interviews are used to identify and prioritise projects. Identification of the most commonly used criteria to select six sigma projects can help practitioners to select projects based on multiple criteria by using tools and techniques identified in this study. This topic has not been applied in the field of Slovenian manufacturing companies and thus it presents the first study in this field in Slovenia.

In the present scenario manufacturing industries have been facing problem-related to cost, quality, and customer satisfaction. To overcome such problems, the organizations are ready to adopt continuous improvement (CI) approaches such as Lean Six Sigma (LSS) which keeps them stable when the demand for products or services fluctuates. LSS is a breakthrough improvement approach that helps to improve the bottom-line result of the company by utilizing its tools and techniques. The successful adaptation of the LSS approach provides a significant improvement in key metrics but deficiency of proper implementation shows a negative effect. To prevent such a situation, need to know about their failure factors. The objective of the present study is to assess the critical failure factors (CFFs) for LSS framework implementation in manufacturing organizations. The leading CFFs for LSS have been identified and selected through a structured literature review and expert opinion. The CFFs based model for LSS implementation has been developed using the Interpretative Structural Modelling and Matrice d’ Impacts Croises Multiplication Appliquee a un Classement (ISM-MICMAC) approach. Previous studies related to such concerns have not developed a structural hierarchical model that is necessary to tackle CFFs towards the LSS implementation process. Such an interrelation helps decision-makers, planners to systematically guide about the barriers that affect the implementation process and help for further implementation success. The developed structured model will also help LSS practitioners, consultants, researchers to anticipate the potential CFFs to implement the LSS framework in their industry for continuous improvement and achieve a leading position in a competitive market.

Lean Six Sigma is like twins to continuous improvement project which can be managed by using DMAIC methodology. DMAIC methodologies consist of several tools and techniques, and these tools differ for different industries. Thus, this study seeks to explore and compare the experiences of various organizations from various industries undertaking DMAIC activities within their organization in order to sustain the performance and maximize their value. This paper provides an overview of each tool and techniques used in DMAIC stage.

Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing are the two most popular and successful programs espoused by the industries over the last few decades. Many companies such as Toyota, Danaher Corporation, General Electric, Motorola and many others have achieved impressive results by implementing either a Lean or Six Sigma methodology in their organisation. Six Sigma, originated in Motorola in mid 1980s, brought revolution in the industries worldwide and has become the long term business strategy to achieve competitive advantage and to excel in operations excellence. Six Sigma is widely recognized as a methodology that employs statistical and non-statistical tools and techniques to maximize an organization’s Return on Investment (ROI) through the elimination of defects in processes (Antony et al. 2011). Lean Manufacturing, on the other hand, was another quality initiative proposed by Americans in response to compete with Japanese manufacturers and its superior manufacturing techniques (following the concept of Toyota Production System (TPS) to resolve quality problems in their organization) as their import became serious concern to western producers.

Quality control becomes an important key for companies in suppressing the number of defective produced products. Six Sigma is a quality control method that aims to minimize defective products to the lowest point or achieve operational performance with a sigma value of 6 with only yielding 3.4 defective products of 1 million product. Stages of Six Sigma method starts from the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) stages that help the company in improving quality and continuous improvement. Based on the results of research on baby clothes products, data in March 2018 the percentage of defective products produced reached 1.4% exceeding 1% tolerance limit, with a Sigma value of 4.14 meaning a possible defect product of 4033.39 opportunities per million products. In the pareto diagram there were 5 types of CTQ (Critical to Quality) such as oblique obras, blobor screen printing, there is a fabric / head cloth code on the final product, hollow fabric / thin fabric fiber, and dirty cloth. The factors caused quality problems such as Manpower, Materials, Environtment, and Machine. Suggestion for consideration of company improvement was continuous improvement on every existing quality problem like in Manpower factor namely improving comprehension, awareness of employees in producing quality product and improve employee's accuracy, Strength Quality Control and give break time. Materials by making the method of cutting the fabric head, the Machine by scheduling machine maintenance and the provision of needle containers at each employees desk sewing and better environtment by installing exhaust fan and renovating the production room.

Integrating circularity in business strategy is difficult to achieve for companies as it requires impactful changes in core business processes. While research has focused on identifying key barriers, little is known about the organizational attributes that can assist businesses in integrating circularity in their strategies. The purpose of this study is to investigate the implications of organizational managers and network interactions for the integration of circularity in business strategy. Through using survey data from 627 SMEs (small- and medium-sized enterprises) in the Netherlands, this study shows that managers who interpret circularity as an opportunity can have a positive direct and indirect effect on the integration of circularity in a company’s strategy. The results furthermore highlight the importance of circular network interactions for the integration of circularity in business strategy. This article contributes to recent calls for more empirical research into the integration of circularity and offers relevant insights for companies aiming to integrate circularity.

Even if Lean and Six Sigma tools are available for large audiences, many of the continuous improvement projects fail due to the lack of a pathway that ensures appropriate results in a timely manner. We would like to address this universal issue by generating, testing and validating an algorithm that improves manufacturing processes in a controlled manner. With a selection of the most valuable set of tools and concepts implemented in a specific order, a guideline for successful project implementation is proposed. Decreasing the overall number of continuous improvement project failures is the main scope of our algorithm and suggested methodology.

The aims of this study are to measure the defect rate and analyze the problems of production of ready concrete mixture plant by using Six Sigma methodology which is a business strategy for operations improvement depending basically on the application of its sub-methodology DMAIC improvement cycle and the basic statistical tools where the process sigma level of concrete production in the case study was 2.41 σ.

Corporate social Responsibility has become a buzz word in recent times. Its worldwide acceptance due to the social consciousness of enterprises coupled with legal orientation in developing countries like India has made it one of the most researched issue for researchers across continents. This paper is an attempt to review the development in the core concepts and theories which have been put forwarded by different researchers during the time period of 2010-2018. The paper undergoes a time series analysis for the selected period evaluating the evolution and impact assessment of CSR on core managerial concepts like marketing, finance and Human Resource management. The researchers after time series analysis have concluded that CSR is age long practice which has changed its orientation with the changes in objectives of business. It can be easily classified in three conceptual eras on the basis of its objectives. In the initial era it was a self-driven practice mainly influenced by the values of promoters of business. In the later stages it can be related with a business strategy of gaining goodwill. In the present era corporates have understood the value of societal obligation and it has again become a self-driven exercise. Further the impact of CSR has coupled with almost all functions of management which can be easily understood from the host of studies conducted during the selected period. The selected studies indicate that CSR has been instrumental in increasing net worth, customer satisfaction and employee retention.
