Abstract: Actors struggle in the nuclear power games is more symbolic one, due to the fact that it is believed that a nuclear attack nowadays is not likely to happen, since it is generally-accepted that nations cannot reliably defend against a nuclear attack by using traditional means. Therefore, the present paper aims to emphasize the role of actors’ nuclear rethoric in pursuing nuclear objectives. The document analyzes the nuclear doctrine of the first three most powerful nuclear-states, highlighting the potential of strategic communication.

This paper studies the conditions that improve bargaining power using threats and promises. We develop a model of strategic communication, based on theconflict game with perfect information, in which a noisycommitment messageis sent by a better-informed sender to a receiver who takes an action that determines the welfare of both. Our model captures different levels of aligned-preferences, for which classical games such asstag hunt,hawk-dove, andprisoner’s dilemmaare particular cases. We characterise the Bayesian perfect equilibrium with nonbinding messages undertruth-telling beliefsandsender’s bargaining powerassumptions. Through our equilibrium selection we show that the less conflict the game has, the more informative the equilibrium signal is and less credibility is necessary to implement it.

This chapter asks: how does a young, British woman succeed in leading a group of patriarchal, hierarchically organized, tribal head hunters? In Burma during World War II, Ursula Graham Bower recruited, trained and led a group of Naga head hunters successfully against the Japanese. She was the only woman to hold a de facto combat command in the British Army during WWII. This chapter distinguishes between transactional and transformational models of leadership, discusses some of findings on the role of gender in transformational leadership and then examines the literature on cross-cultural leadership, which indicates that roles and norms of leadership depend on the cultural context. If desirable leadership traits are culturally dependent, then it seems likely that the Naga would not have accepted Bower as a leader under any circumstances. Yet, in a society where leadership was hereditary, male, and based on the collective, Ursula Graham Bower was able to lead the Naga successfully against the Japanese. This chapter considers the topics of cultural difference, cultural congruence, rapport and cultural adjustment in cross-culture in extremis military leadership.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe the need to theorize firms’ involvement in social issues and propose the social issues management model as a framework for analyzing the communication processes underlying social issues management. An application of the new approach is illustrated through a brief case analysis. Design/methodology/approach The paper is conceptual and emphasizes theory building for firm’s involvement in social issues management. Findings The paper describes modifications to the general issues management model that can be adopted to reflect the social issues management process and contemporary digital media environments. Practical implications The paper can benefit theory and practice of social issues management by describing how specific communication strategies and digital media use may affect social issues management. Social implications Because firms increasingly are motivated or urged by stakeholders to take stands on social issues, understanding how they can perform the role of social issue manager can enhance their potential for contributing to positive social change. Originality/value The paper provides a much needed update to the models of issues management used in strategic communication. The new model accounts for the increasing pressure on firms to address social issues and the role of digital communication channels in that process.

Although sustainable responsible investing (SRI) has increasingly become popular on the financial markets, the potential of raising capital from private investors for sustainable development has not been efficiently seized thus far. The lack of knowledge and training about SRI by financial advisors has often been identified as one of the main reasons for this investment gap. In order to accelerate the role of financial advisors as change agents for SRI, this study proposes several strategic communication interventions that advisors could employ in their advisory talks to raise more attention and engagement among private investors for SRI. The interventions proposed are oriented on the 5A model of SRI decision making by Herwig Pilaj and drawn from an interdisciplinary literature review on sustainability, communication, and attitudinal and behavioral change. The results provide a perspective and practical guide for financial advisors on how to effectively communicate SRI to private investors. Limitations and areas future research are discussed.
