Abstract We investigate the number of curves having a rational point of almost minimal height in the family of quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve. This problem takes its origin in the work of Hooley, who asked this question in the setting of real quadratic fields. In particular, he showed an asymptotic estimate for the number of such fields with almost minimal fundamental unit. Our main result establishes the analogue asymptotic formula in the setting of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve.

Context. The ASPIICS instrument is a novel externally occulted coronagraph that will be launched on board the PROBA-3 mission of the European Space Agency. The external occulter will be placed on one satellite ~150 m ahead of the second satellite that will carry an optical instrument. During 6 h out of 19.38 h of orbit, the satellites will fly in a precise (accuracy around a few millimeters) formation, constituting a giant externally occulted coronagraph. The large distance between the external occulter and the primary objective will allow observations of the white-light solar corona starting from extremely low heights ~ 1.1R⊙. Aims. We intend to analyze influence of shifts of the satellites and misalignments of optical elements on the ASPIICS performance in terms of diffracted light. Based on the quantitative influence of misalignments on diffracted light, we provide a recipe for choosing the size of the internal occulter (IO) to achieve a trade-off between the minimal height of observations and sustainability to possible misalignments. Methods. We considered different types of misalignments and analyzed their influence from optical and computational points of view. We implemented a numerical model of the diffracted light and its propagation through the optical system and computed intensities of diffracted light throughout the instrument. Our numerical approach is based on a model from the literature that considered the axisymmetrical case. Here we extend the model to include nonsymmetrical cases and possible misalignments. Results. The numerical computations fully confirm the main properties of the diffracted light that we obtained from semi-analytical consideration. We obtain that relative influences of various misalignments are significantly different. We show that the internal occulter with RIO = 1.694 mm = 1.1R⊙ is large enough to compensate possible misalignments expected to occur in PROBA-3/ASPIICS. Besides that we show that apodizing the edge of the internal occulter leads to additional suppression of the diffracted light. Conclusions. We conclude that the most important misalignment is the tilt of the telescope with respect to the line connecting the center of the external occulter and the entrance aperture. Special care should be taken to co-align the external occulter and the coronagraph, which means co-aligning the diffraction fringe from the external occulter and the internal occulter. We suggest that the best orientation strategy is to point the coronagraph to the center of the external occulter.

AbstractObjective3-M syndrome is characterized by severe short stature, syndromic features, and characteristic radiographic findings. Growth hormone (GH) has been used with variable success. Recombinant human insulin like growth factor-1 (rhIGF-1) has never been utilized.Case presentationWe describe a child with severe growth retardation, macrocephaly, and skeletal abnormalities with evidence of GH insensitivity subsequently treated with rhIGF-1. He developed morbid obesity and comorbidities including voracious appetite, acanthosis nigricans, tonsillar hypertrophy, and severe obstructive sleep apnea with minimal height improvement. Genetic testing done at 11.5 years revealed a compound heterozygous mutation (c.2112G>A(p.W704X) and c.2559delC) in the CUL7 gene consistent with 3-M syndrome-1. rhIGF-1 therapy was discontinued.ConclusionsThis case highlights the novel use of rhIGF-1 therapy on a child with 3-M syndrome-1 with minimal height benefit but accelerated weight gain and serves as a reminder of the importance of re-evaluating therapy efficacy and side effect profile.

The focus of the investigation was on an analysis of criteria for the entry of mares of the Austrian warm-blood horse into the stud book and analysis of the pedigree of the mares. The objective of the thesis was to compare the selected properties of the mares based on their pedigree and to evaluate the effect of the Trakehner horse on the frame, type and conformation of the Austrian warm-blood, to ana­ly­se the influence of selected effects on the physique and mechanics of movement on entry into the stud book of the Austrian warm-blood, and to compare selected properties of the mares with the pedigree standard of the Austrian warm-blood. The database was compiled from results of evaluations of the conformation and mechanics of movement on entry into stud books in the period of 1990–2006. The evaluated characteristics were the basic body measurements – height of withers, heart girth, bone, and evaluation of the body conformation on a ten-point scale – head, neck, forehand, middle-piece, quarters, forelegs, hind legs, correctness of pace, walk, mechanics of movement and total mark for conformation. The comparative base consisted of 4407 mares. On the basis of results of subsequent tests we can indicate the pedigree group 1 (pure-bred Trakehner mares) as a group which obtained the highest marks for body conformation (head – 7.82, neck – 7.38, middle-piece – 7.46, correctness of pace – 7.27 total mark for conformation – 7.37). We compared the group of mares of the Austrian warm-blood pedigree standard and we discovered that out of the 4407 mares entered into the stud book of the Austrian warm-blood horses in the period of 1990–2006 the height at withers of 65 mares (1.5 % of the monitored population) was less than 158 cm, which in the Stud Book Rules is the minimal height for entry.

We consider the minimal height of a derivation tree as a complexity measure for context-free languages and show that this leads to a strict and dense hierarchy between logarithmic and linear (arbitrary) tree height. In doing so, we improve a result obtained by Gabarro in [7]. Furthermore, we provide a counter-example to disprove a conjecture of Čulik and Maurer in [6] who suggested that all languages with logarithmic tree height would be regular. As a new method, we use counter-representations where the successor relation can be handled as the complement of context-free languages. A similar hierarchy is obtained considering the ambiguity as a complexity measure.

This paper presents results of tribological examinations of chosen automotive subassemblies made of plastics by using of 3D-printing. The influence of chosen technological parameters, i.e. plastic temperature, the velocity of printing head, and the height of deposited simple layer on wear of samples produced of PA 12 polymer rubbing against hard anodised sliding guide of car sunroof is defined. It was found that samples printed at minimal temperature (t = 240°C), a minimal height of deposited simple layer (h = 0,1 mm), and a minimal (40 mm/s) and maximal (v = 60 mm/s) deposition velocity show the minimal wear. Examining under similar conditions (p = 0.4 MPa, v = 2.5 m/s, reciprocating movement) of samples made by using press moulding cut out from car sub-assemblies for a comparison were carried out. As a result of experiments, it was concluded that the wear intensity of roller stretching drive belt made from composite (PA15GF) and the wear intensity of the belt itself during sliding, caused by seizure of bearing, is so high that menaces engine with damage.
