Nitrogen fertilizer and plant density are considered some of the most important factors affecting phenology and grain yield of maize. Therefore, current study was conducted to assess the effects of nitrogen fertilizer application and plant density on phenology (days to tasseling, silking and maturity) and grain yield of maize (Variety: Rampur Composite) at Mangalpur VDC-3, Anandapur, Chitwan, Nepal during 2006-07 winter season. The five levels of nitrogen as 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N/ha and three levels of the plant population as 55555, 66666 and 83333 plants/ha were evaluated using two factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. The days of flowering (tasseling and silking) decreased with increasing nitrogen level up to 200 kg N/ha and increased with increasing level of plant population up to 83333 plants/ha). Physiological maturity and grain yield increased with increasing level of nitrogen up to 200 kg N/ha and plant population up to 83333 plants/ha. The highest grain yield (6925.79 kg/ha) was obtained with 200 kg N/ha + 66666 plants/ha. This study suggested that maize production can be maximized by cultivating maize with the use of 200 kg N/ha and maintaining the plant density of 66666 plants/ha.

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of Azotobacter on growth and yield of maize (variety Rampur composite) at farmland of National Maize Research Program, Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal during the winter season of 2007-08 and 2008-09. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with eight treatments each replicated three times. The treatments were control, 120:60:40 kg NP2O5K2O ha-1, Azotobacter seed inoculation, Azotobacter soil application, Azotobacter +10 t FYM ha-1, 10 t FYM ha-1, 120:60:40 kg NP2O5K2O ha-1 + Azotobacter, 120:60:40 kg NP2O5K2O ha-1 + Azotobacter + 10 t FYM ha-1. Analysis of variance showed that grain yield, plant height, ear height, ear length, kernel per rows and 1000 grain weight were significantly affected with treatments. Only inoculation of Azotobacter increased 15 to 35% grain yield over non inoculated treatments. The benefit of Azotobacter inoculation was higher in the absence of chemical fertilizer application. A field experiment was conducted at National Maize Research Program, Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal during winter season from 6th October, 2015 to 5th March 2016 to estimate different heterosis on single cross maize hybrids . Thirteen maize hybrids were tested randomized complete block design with three replications. Hybrid namely RML-98/RL-105 gave the highest standard heterosis (57.5%) for grain yield over CP-666 followed by RML-4/NML-2 (32.6%), RML-95/RL-105 (29%) and RML-5/RL-105 (20.6%). The hybrid RML-98/RL-105 produced the highest standard heterosis (75.1%) for grain yield over Rajkumar followed by RML-4/NML-2(50.2%), RML-95/RL-105(46.6%), RML-5/RL-105 and (35.7%). Mid and better parent heterosis were significantly higher for yield and yield attributes viz. ear length, ear diameter, no of kernel row per ear, no of kernel per row and test weight. The highest positive mid-parent heterosis for grain yield was found in RML-98/RL-105 followed by RML-5/RL-105, RML-95/RL-105, and RML-4/NML-2. For the grain yield the better parent heterosis was the highest in RML-98/RL-105, followed by RML-5/RL-105, RML-95/RL-105, and RML-4/NML-2. These results suggested that maize production can be maximized by cultivating hybrids namely RML-98/RL-105, RML-5/RL-105, RML-95/RL-105, and RML-4/NML-2.

Maize is the second most important crop of Nepal. The yield of the crop is low due to lack of appropriate plant density for the varieties. The field experiment was carried out to study the effect of different row spacings on different maize varieties at Deupur, Lamahi municipality of the dang district in province No. 5, Nepal during the rainy season from June to September, 2018. Four levels of spacings (boardcasting and three row spacings of 45, 60 and 75 cm) and two maize varieties (Rampur Composite and Arun-2) were evaluated using randomized complete block design with three replications. The highest grain yield was found in Rampur Composite and Arun-2 while they were planted with row spacing of 60 cm with plant to plant spacing of 25 cm. The highest grain yield, cob length, cob circumference, number of rows per cob, thousand grain weight  were reported when maize was planted in the  row spacing 60×25cm. Among the maize varieties, Rampur Composite produced the highest grain yield, cob length, cob circumference, number of rows per cob as compared to Arun-2. This study suggested that maize production can be maximized by cultivating maize varieties with row spacing of 60 cm with plant to plant spacing of 25 cm.

Nepalese yellow maize inbred lines were characterized for general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) of their crosses and parents were identified having high combining ability for determining the heterotic effects on yield and other quantitative traits of hybrids. A line x tester mating design was used for making the crosses in the winter season of 2008 and the hybrids along with their parents and four checks were evaluated in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications in the spring season of 2009 at the experimental farm of the National Maize Research Program, Chitwan. Significant variations were found among the treatments for grain yield and other traits which indicated presence of high magnitude of genetic variations among tested inbred lines. The cross between RML-32 and RML-17 produced the highest grain yield (15870 kg/ha) among the crosses. Hybrids such as RL-194 x RL-84 (10770 kg/ha), RML-21 x RML-17 (9270 kg/ha), RL-180 x RML-17 (9270 kg/ha) and L-1 x RL-84 (8785 kg/ha) were found superior grain yielder. Thirty-nine hybrids showed positive mid-parent heterosis for grain yield among 40 crosses. The highest positive mid-parent heterosis for grain yield was found 880% in cross between RML-32 and RML-17, followed by RL-98X RML-17 (507%), RL-103 x RML-17 (403%), PUTU-18 x RML- 17 (351%) and RL-180 x RL 84 (316%). A field experiment was carried out during the winter season 2014/2015 in one of the fields of Abi Gharq district, located 10 km west of the Babylon governorate. The randomized complete block design was used under split-plots arrangement with three replications. The main plots were included levels of nitrogen fertilizer (without fertilizer, 50, 100, 150 N, 200, 250 kg). while the sub-plots were included (without a mower, a mower after 45 days, a mower after 65 days, a mower after 85 days) after planting, The data were taken and analyzed according to the used design and the averages were tested according to the LSD test, and the results were summarized as follows: The date of mowing C1 (mower after 45 days of planting) was significantly higher by giving the highest average for the degree of fallowness and the index of harvest, and the percentage of nitrogen in the green fodder was 3.647, 37.63% and 1.837%, respectively. Treatment C0 (without mower) outperformed significantly by giving it the highest average of biological yield, grain yield and nitrogen percentage in grains, as it gave 15,114 tons. H-1 and 5.73 tons. H-1 and 1.242%, respectively The fertilizer level N5 (250 kg N. H-1) gave the highest average of the degree of lying, biological yield, grain yield, nitrogen percentage in green fodder and nitrogen content in grains, as it gave 3.854% and 7.571 tons. H-1 and 6.20 tons. % And 1.397%, respectively, We conclude from the results of the study that lack of without cutting to a significant increase in the degree of resting, biological yield and grain yield, and we conclude that the high levels of nitrogen led to a significant increase in the degree of lying, biological yield, grain yield, and the proportion of nitrogen in green fodder and grains

Nitrogen (N) fertilizer is considered as one of the most important factors affecting growth and grain yield of hybrid maize. This study was conducted to determine the effects of different rates of nitrogen and varieties on growth and yield of hybrid maize in Lamahi Municipality, Dang, Nepal from June to October, 2019. Three levels of hybrid maize varieties (10V10, Rajkumar F1 and NMH-731) and four levels of nitrogen (160, 180, 200 and 220 kg N ha-1) were evaluated using two factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that grain yield and yield attributing traits of hybrid maize varieties increased with the increasing level of nitrogen from 160 to 220 kg ha-1. The application of nitrogen @ 220 kg N ha-1 produced the highest grain yield (10.07 t ha-1), cob length (16.33 cm), no of rows per cob (14.97), no of grains per row (33.37), cob diameter (4.54), thousand grain weight (276.77 g), stover yield (12.91 t ha-1), biological yield (23.00 t ha-1), harvest index (43.80), gross return (NRs. 208940 ha-1), net return (NRs.104488 ha-1) and B:C ratio (2.001). The hybrid maize variety 10V10 produced the highest grain yield (9.35 t ha-1), net returns (NRs. 91740.66 ha-1) and B:C ratio (1.91) accompanied by the highest cob length (16.25 cm), and as number of grains per row (32.35) as compared to other varieties. This study suggested that maize production can be maximized by cultivating hybrid maize variety 10V10 with the use of 220 kg N ha-1 in inner Terai region of Nepal.

Rajma (Phaseolus vulgaris L) known as the common bean, French bean, kidney bean, bush bean, and pole bean is the most important grain legume of Nepal which covers about 10,529 ha areas along with the productivity of 1477kgha-1. Generally it is grown during summer in mid/high hills and during winter (post rainy) season interai/inner terai in rice and maize based eco-system. Now Rajma bean is being popular as the cash crop in the province 3, 5 and 6 because of producing organic products and tastier quality. Multi-environment trials was carried out at Nepalgunj, Parwanipur, Itahari and Surkhet during the winter season of 2014-2017 comprised of 10 diverse Rajma genotypes in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications in order to evaluate the quantitative variation with respect to yield and yield contributing traits. The combined analysis of variance showed that the highly significant differences among the genotypes and locations in the traits like days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, hundred seed weight and grain yield. However; there was not any GxE interaction effect found in days to flowering, days to maturity and grain yield. Mean yield performances showed that the genotype PDR-14 (2341kgha-1) produced the highest yield followed by Utkarsh (2332kgha-1) and Arun-2 (2021kgha-1). In conclusion, PDR-14 gave 9-56% higher yield among the genotypes and its stability analysis test also indicated that PDR-14 was found a highly stable across the environments and over the years. Variegated red kidney shape seed, white flowers along with dwarf and glabrous leaf pubescence is the DUS trait of the PDR-14 and recommended for terai/inner terai to high hills.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of isolated or combined roots and straw of black oat and wheat, as previous crops in autumn/winter, on the performance of soybean in succession. The experiment was carried out in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 crop seasons in a randomized complete block design, with four replicates. The following seven treatments were applied in the autumn/winter of 2017 and 2018, before soybean planting: fallow; straw of black oat or wheat, distributed on plots kept under fallow during autumn/winter, without roots; plots only with roots of black oat or wheat, without straw; and plots with straw and roots of black oat or wheat. Soybean crop performance was estimated using the following variables: plant density, leaf area index, soil plant analysis development (SPAD) index, shoot dry matter, grain yield, and yield components. In comparison with fallow, the cultivation of black oat or wheat, as previous crops during the autumn/winter, increases soybean grain yield. The impact of the roots of black oat or wheat on soybean yield is similar to that of straw. Soybean agronomic performance is improved in the combined presence of roots and straw of black oat or wheat.

The field trial was carried out to evaluate the effect of timing nitrogen second dose fertilization on the grain yield and yield components of some improved maize varieties. The field experiments was conducted at the Institute for Agricultural Research IAR-ABU Research Farm Samaru – Zaria and Military Cantonment Farm Jaji – Nigeria. Treatments consist of three maize varieties (SAMMAZ 14, SAMMAZ 15 and SAMMAZ 16) and six timings of nitrogen second dose of fertilizer application. Data were recorded on grain yield, number of cobs /plant, number of grain /row, cob(ear) diameter, cob(ear) weight and 100 grain weight. Treatments were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. SAMMAZ 16 produced significantly higher grain yield and recorded superior yield characters over SAMMAZ 14 and 15. The results further showed that time of nitrogen second dose application 6 WAS outperformed other timings evaluated at both location. The study identified. SAMMAZ 16 and time 6 WAS appeared to be the option for increased maize grain yield in the study area

This study was carried out at National Maize Research Program, Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal to evaluate the effect of sowing dates on growth and grain yield of maize inbred lines. Seven maize inbred lines namely NML-2, RML-17, RML-32, RML-4, RML-86, RML-95 and RML-96 were planted on three different dates i.e. September 02, September 12, September 22, 2015 during winter using randomized complete block design with two replications. The results of this study showed that the growth and yield traits were significantly affected by various planting dates. The inbred line RML-17 produced the highest grain yield where as NML-2 gave the lowest yield during winter season. The highest yield was obtained when inbred lines were planted on September 12 and the lowest yield on September 2. The planting from September 2 to September 12 increased the grain yield. The delay in planting i.e. September 22 decreased grain yield. Therefore September 12 planting was suitable for inbred lines to maximize grain yield production.
