The conventional introductory course rests upon the pedagogical assumption that the teacher's function is to transmit information (or knowledge) and that the student's function is to receive it. According to this transmitter-receiver model of the educational process, teaching begins with a “knower” who “transmits” what he knows to a “learner.” In higher education, certain euphemisms are employed to soften and furnish a color of legitimacy to this model: the teacher is a “scholar,” and “authority,” in his field; he possesses an “expert knowledge” which the student has come to school to “learn“; the student is the “learner.” The teacher's role, accordingly, is the active one of transmitting information and the student's role, accordingly, is the passive one of receiving and recording (or memorizing) this information.

Abstract This study presents a sensitivity analysis of the LCOE for a particle-based system with the costs of the most current components. New models for the primary heat exchanger, thermal energy storage and tower are presented and used to establish lower and upper bounds for these three components. The rest of component costs such as particle cost, cavity cost, lift cost and balance of power are set to lower and upper bounds estimating a 25% of uncertainty. Some relevant parameters such as lift efficiency and storage thermal resistance are also included in the analysis with a 25% uncertainty. This study also includes an upgrade to the receiver model by including the wind effect in the efficiency, which was not included in previous publications. A parametric analysis shows the optimum values of solar multiple, storage hours, tower height and concentration ratio, and a probabilistic analysis provides a cumulative distribution function for a range of LCOE values. The results show that the LCOE could be below $0.06/kWh with a probability of 90%, where the highest uncertainty is on the primary heat exchanger cost.

Operating quality of automated video control systems depends on optical specifications of video camera and peculiar features of video algorithm. Specified target function performance probability can serve as criterion of automated video control use efficiency. In this work, a new performance efficiency estimation method for automated equipment of target environment video control is suggested: to estimate the probability of target functions’ (object detection, capture, and auto tracking) performance. Theoretical prediction of target functions performance probability was built upon Johnson’s criterion and the use of optimal receiver model. The results of suggested method’s experimental verification have shown that target detection occurred when signal/noise ratio level was above 6. This level can be regarded as low value to ensure that object is detected with probability 0.9.

Of contracting the thermal contrasts of the city of Juazeiro of the North. The transectofor theater was still rainy and began at 21:00 hours, not exceeding 50 minutes, collecting in total the temperature of 25 points distributed in the urban perimeter and considering geo-environmental and georban features. The notion of epistolary discourse is understood in this paper as a communicative event reflected in the letter or other varieties of this genre in a specific sender and receiver model. The article presents some features of epistolary discourse with reference to the correspondence between Wisława Szymborska and Kornel Filipowicz. In the first part of the study, the author situates private letters in the discursive reality and introduces the participants of such kind of correspondence. Then, the interactive aspect of epistolary discourse is examined, specifically inner and outer dialogue. After that, the elements of direct dialogue are discussed, e.g. forms of address, forms of metatext and linguistic equivalents of gestures. From the data, it can be assumed that the letters in question contain the typical features of epistolary discourse. However, original and unconventional elements seem to be part of the letters as well (e.g. employing fictitious characters in the correspondence, creating collages, linguistic stylizations, etc.).

Aiming at the influence of time-varying and frequency-varying of noise on the signal detection performance in the short wave wide-band channel and the large amount of computation in the channelized receiver model of the traditional low pass filter bank, a cross-channel reconfigurable multi-phase high-efficiency channelization method based on morphological processing is proposed in this paper .Firstly, The wide-band signal is coarsely filtered by the multi-phase structure of the uniform filter bank which is determined by the protection interval between signals, and then the bandwidth and position of the signal are determined by improved morphological operation and threshold decision of the power spectrum. Finally, the sub-band signals across the channel are combined to complete the approximate reconstruction of the sub-signals. Compared with the computational complexity of traditional channelized receiver model, the results show that this method has lower computational complexity. The simulation results show that the method can achieve the approximate constant false alarm rate(CFAR) under the colored noise environment, and has higher detection capability under different signal-to-noise ratios(SNR).

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) cannot only be used practically in marketing efforts, but also as symbols, due to the images and associations they provoke of for example modernity and speed. The marketing of a city through the use of ICT-images however, also involve risks, as ICTs among certain people also bring about negative associations. Therefore, marketers need to be aware of what happens with the marketing material after it has been developed and sent out. The main argument of this chapter is that sense making emerges through a dialogic process. By analyzing semiotically a marketing leaflet for the Stockholm-based ICT-project mCity, and two ads for Nokia phones that appeared in Europe at about the same time as mCity, this chapter challenges the traditional cybernetic sender-receiver model of communication, and proposes that when the sender has sent the message, the message becomes a speaker on its own, interacting with the listener through a dialogic process set in the mind of the lis ener. When understanding this, marketers should benchmark the use of ICTs in other contemporary media in order to ensure the success aimed for with the city marketing material using ICT-imager.
