<p>The heavy metal content is very dangerous because it can pollute the environment. One of the heavy metals waste commonly found in the textile industry is chromium (Cr). <em>Mimosa pudica</em> is a weed plant and its availability is very abundant. However, it also contains tannin which can be developed into tannin gel biosorbent to adsorption heavy metal content in the wastewater. The purpose of this research is to study <em>Mimosa pudica</em> tannin as a Cr biosorbent from textile wastewater. There are two steps to synthesis tannin gel biosorbent. They are the tannin extraction and the condensation polymerization process. Tannin is easily soluble in water so the condensation polymerization process is needed to make it insoluble in water. The extraction of <em>Mimosa pudica </em>tannin was done using water solvent. The condensation polymerization process was done by the reaction of tannin extract and formaldehyde. The Cr content of textile industry wastewater in the Pasar Kliwon, Surakarta was 4 ppm. The results of the biosorption of Cr heavy metal using <em>Mimosa pudica</em> tannin gel showed that the remaining Cr heavy metal was 0.7098 ppm. In this paper, a kind of titanium-doped silicone prepolymer(TDS) was modified by hydroxyl-terminated saturated polyester (HTSP) by condensation polymerization. By Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) the reaction of ethoxy groups of the TDS prepolymer with hydroxyl groups of the HTSP during condensation polymerization process was confirmed. The resins were cured with blocked polymeric isocyanate. The influence of the HTSP content on the properties of the modified resins such as thermal stability, corrosion resistance, as well as mechanical and other properties, were discussed in detail. The results showed that the properties of the resins were improved greatly after modification, and the optimal mass ratio of TDS to HTSP in the modified resins was 1:1. Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) studies indicated that the weight loss of this sample(wTDS : wHTSP =1:1) was not obviously below 400°Cand the impedance value of this coating was significantly higher than that of the others.

Amyloids are highly ordered beta sheet rich stable protein aggregates, which have been found to play a significant role in the onset of several degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Type II diabetes mellitus and so on. Aggregation of proteins leading to amyloid fibril formation via intermediate(s), is thought to be a nucleated condensation polymerization process associated with many pathological conditions. There has been extensive research to identify inhibitors of these disease oriented aggregation processes. In recent times, quantum dots, with their unique physico-chemical properties have grabbed the attention of scientific community due to its applications in medical sciences. Quantum dots are nano-particles usually made of semiconductor materials which emit fluorescence upon radiation. The wavelength of fluorescence emission varies with changes in size of quantum dots. Several studies have reported significant inhibitory effects of these quantum dots towards amyloidogenesis, thereby presenting themselves as promising candidates against amyloidosis. Further, studies have also revealed amyloid detection capacity of quantum dots with sensitivity and specificity better than conventional probes. In the current review, we will discuss the various effects of quantum dots on protein aggregation pathways, their mechanism of actions and their potentials as effective therapeutics against amyloidosis.

Summary1. Choline chloride, 0.1 M (in 0.25 M Tris. HCl buffer, pH 7.4 or 8.0, 37°), doubles the rate of hydrolysis of TAME by bovine thrombokinase but has no effect on the hydrolysis of this ester by either human or bovine thrombin. Only when 1.0 M or more choline chloride is present is the hydrolysis of BAME by thrombokinase or thrombin weakly inhibited. Evidence is presented that shows that these effects are due to the quaternary amine group.2. Tetramethyl ammonium bromide or chloride has about the same effects on the hydrolysis of esters by these enzymes as does choline chloride but tetra-ethyl, -n.propyl and -n.butyl ammonium bromides (0.1 M) are stronger accelerators of the thrombokinase-TAME reaction and they also accelerate, but to a lesser degree, the thrombin-TAME reaction. In addition, they inhibit the hydrolysis of BAME by both enzymes. Their effects on these reactions, however, do not follow any regular order. The tetraethyl compound is the strongest accelerator of the thrombokinase-TAME reaction but the tetra-ethyl and -butyl compounds are the strongest accelerators of the thrombin-TAME reaction. The ethyl and propyl compounds are the best (although weak) inhibitors of the thrombokinase-BAME and the propyl compound of the thrombin-BAME reactions.3. Tetra-methyl, -ethyl, -n.propyl and -n.butyl ammonium bromides (0.01 M) inhibit the clotting of fibrinogen by thrombin (bovine and human proteins) at pH 7.4, imidazole or pH 6.1, phosphate buffers and they also inhibit, but to a lesser degree, a modified one-stage prothrombin test. In all cases the inhibition increases regularly as the size of the alkyl group increases from methyl to butyl. Only the ethyl com pound (0.025 M but not 0.01 M), however, significantly inhibits the polymerization of bovine fibrin monomers. It was concluded that inhibition of the fibrinogen-thrombin and the one-stage tests by the quaternary amines is not due to any effect of the com pounds on the polymerization process but probably due to inhibition of thrombin’s action on fibrinogen by the quaternary amines.
