Valve characteristics are an essential part of digital hydraulics. The on/off solenoid valves utilized on many of these systems can significantly affect the performance. Various factors can affect the speed of the valves causing them to experience various delays, which impact the overall performance of hydraulic systems. This work presents the development of an adaptive statistical based thresholding real-time valve delay model for digital Pump/Motors. The proposed method actively measures the valve delays in real-time and adapts the threshold of the system with the goal of improving the overall efficiency and performance of the system. This work builds on previous work by evaluating an alternative method used to detect valve delays in real-time. The method used here is a shift detection method for the pressure signals that utilizes domain knowledge and the system’s historical statistical behavior. This allows the model to be used over a large range of operating conditions, since the model can learn patterns and adapt to various operating conditions using domain knowledge and statistical behavior. A hydraulic circuit was built to measure the delay time experienced from the time the signal is sent to the valve to the time that the valve opens. Experiments were conducted on a three piston in-line digital pump/motor with 2 valves per cylinder, at low and high pressure ports, for a total of six valves. Two high frequency pressure transducers were used in this circuit to measure and analyze the differential pressure on the low and high pressure side of the on/off valves, as well as three in-cylinder pressure transducers. Data over 60 cycles was acquired to analyze the model against real time valve delays. The results show that the algorithm was successful in adapting the threshold for real time valve delays and accurately measuring the valve delays.

Abstract Purge flow is bled from the upstream compressor and supplied to the under-platform region to prevent hot main gas path ingress that damages vulnerable under-platform hardware components. A majority of turbine rim seal research has sought to identify methods of improving sealing technologies and understanding the physical mechanisms that drive ingress. While these studies directly support the design and analysis of advanced rim seal geometries and purge flow systems, the studies are limited in their applicability to real-time monitoring required for condition-based operation and maintenance. As operational hours increase for in-service engines, this lack of rim seal performance feedback results in progressive degradation of sealing effectiveness, thereby leading to reduced hardware life. To address this need for rim seal performance monitoring, the present study utilizes measurements from a one-stage turbine research facility operating with true-scale engine hardware at engine-relevant conditions. Time-resolved pressure measurements collected from the rim seal region are regressed with sealing effectiveness through the use of common machine learning techniques to provide real-time feedback of sealing effectiveness. Two modelling approaches are presented that use a single sensor to predict sealing effectiveness accurately over a range of two turbine operating conditions. Results show that an initial purely data-driven model can be further improved using domain knowledge of relevant turbine operations, which yields sealing effectiveness predictions within three percent of measured values.

Injectors have a large potential application as jet boosters in gas distribution networks by using the gas from high-pressure supplies to boost the pressure of gas from low-pressure holders to that required by the distribution system. A theoretical study of the design and performance of injectors for this purpose is described. A one-dimensional theory which takes friction into account is proposed for predicting the performance of injectors with driving pressure ratios up to 14:1. Optimization of the theoretical equations is carried out so that the most suitable dimensions can be chosen for any specified performance. Alternatively, the best operating conditions for a given geometry may be predicted. Experimental results compared well with predictions from the proposed theory particularly in the region close to the optimum working point. Where deviations did occur these are explained by the excessive recirculation of the driving gas at the inlet to the mixing throat, when operated away from the optimum working point at low injection ratios and high pressure lifts. By moving the driving nozzle closer to the inlet of the throat and dispensing with the inlet cone, marked improvements in performance could be obtained at these off-optimum operating conditions.

AbstractWe have conducted short-term pump experiments with pump pressures exceeding ice overburden to study the seasonality of the subglacial hydraulic system of Engabreen, Norway. Data were collected from load cells installed flush with the ice–bedrock interface and pressure transducers installed in boreholes leading from bedrock tunnels underneath the glacier to the ice–bedrock interface. The water-pressure recordings, seen in relation with the load-cell record, show the existence of hydraulically connected vs unconnected bed areas. Monitored boreholes have been used to inject water at high pressures. Each experiment led to the growth of a high-pressure water cavity whose spatial extent could be inferred from load-cell and pressure transducer records. Post-pump pressures were low after summer pump tests and close to ice-overburden level after winter pump experiments. We conclude that drainage takes place in a fast-flow, low-pressure, channel-based drainage system during summer, and a low-flow, high-pressure, linked-cavity drainage system during winter.

The composition of the time-resolved surface pressure field around a high-pressure rotor blade caused by the presence of neighboring blade rows is investigated, with the individual effects of wake, shock and potential field interaction being determined. Two test geometries are considered: first, a high-pressure turbine stage coupled with a swan-necked diffuser exit duct; secondly, the same high-pressure stage but with a vane located in the downstream duct. Both tests were conducted at engine-representative Mach and Reynolds numbers, and experimental data was acquired using fast-response pressure transducers mounted on the mid-height streamline of the HP rotor blades. The results are compared to time-resolved computational predictions of the flowfield in order to aid interpretation of experimental results and to determine the accuracy with which the computation predicts blade interaction. The paper is split into two parts: the first investigating the effect of the upstream vane on the unsteady pressure field around the rotor (vane-rotor interaction), and the second investigating the effect of the downstream vane on the unsteady pressure field around the rotor (rotor-vane interaction). The paper shows that at typical design operating conditions shock interaction from the upstream blade row is an order of magnitude greater than wake interaction and that with the design vane-rotor inter-blade gap the presence of the rotor causes a periodic increase in the strength of the vane trailing edge shock. The presence of the potential field of the downstream vane is found to affect significantly the rotor pressure field downstream of the Mach one surface within each rotor passage.

Using the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes-based numerical methods to simulate the flow field, efficiency and performance of high-pressure turbine components of multi-stage steam turbines result in substantial differences between the experimental and the numerical results pertaining to the individual flow quantities. These differences are integrally noticeable in terms of major discrepancies in aerodynamic losses, efficiency, and performance of the turbine. As a consequence, engine manufacturers are compelled to frequently calibrate their simulation package by performing a series of experiments before issuing efficiency and performance guaranty. The aim of this article is to investigate the cause of the aforementioned differences by utilizing a three-stage high-pressure research turbine with three-dimensional compound lean blades as the platform for experimental and numerical investigations. Experimental data were obtained using interstage aerodynamic measurements at three measurement stations, namely, downstream of the first rotor row, the second stator row, and the second rotor row. Detailed measurements were conducted using custom-designed five-hole probes traversed in both circumferential and radial directions. Aerodynamic measurements were carried out within a rotational speed range of 1800–2800 r/min. Numerical simulations were performed utilizing a commercially available computational fluid dynamics code. A detailed mesh of the three stages was created and used to simulate the corresponding operating conditions. The experimental and numerical results were compared following a critical discussion relative to differences mentioned above.

The use of pilot-ignited, direct-injected natural gas fuelling for heavy-duty on-road applications has been shown to substantially reduce NOx and particulate matter emissions. The fuelling process involves the injection of pilot diesel near top-dead-center, followed shortly afterwards by the injection of natural gas at high pressure. The injection pressure of the gas and diesel will substantially affect the penetration of the fuel into the combustion chamber, the break-up and atomization of the diesel spray, and the mixing and nature of the turbulent gas jet. To investigate these influences, a series of experiments were performed on a single-cylinder heavy-duty engine over a range of engine operating conditions (exhaust gas recirculation fraction, engine speed, engine load). Due to the unique nature of the single-cylinder engine, it was possible to hold all other parameters constant while only varying injection pressure. The results indicated that injection pressure had a substantial impact on emissions and performance at high loads, where substantial reductions in PM and CO were observed, with only minor increases in NOx and no significant effect on tHC or fuel consumption. At low loads, no significant impact on either emissions or performance was detected. The effects of injection pressure, while still significant, were found to be reduced at increased engine speeds. Higher injection pressures were found to consistently reduce both the number density and the size of particles in the exhaust stream.

Introduction. At present, stands with running drums are widely used for various types of tests. Power stands play a special role. Such stands take the mechanical power from the driving wheels of the car. This simulates the process of movement of the vehicle under operating conditions. Such equipment has various designs, principles of operation and performance. It is also used in tests that are different by purpose, development stages and types: research, control, certification, etc. Therefore, it is necessary in order to determine the traction-speed, fuel-efficient and environmental performance characteristics.Materials and methods. The paper provides the overview of the power stands with running drums, which are widespread on the domestic market. The authors carried out the analysis of the main structural solutions: schemes of force transfer between the wheel and the drum; types of loading devices; transmission layout schemes and features of the control and measuring complex. The authors also considered corresponding advantages and disadvantages, recommended spheres of application, demonstrated parameters and characteristics of the units’ workflow, presented components and equipment.Discussion and conclusions. The authors critically evaluate existing models of stands with running drums. Such information is useful for choosing serial models of stands and for developing technical tasks for designing or upgrading the equipment.
