Mt. Simpang and Mt. Tilu Nature Reserve which cover 23,000 hectares area, are the largest nature reserves in West Java (Whitten et al. 1996). Besides their important value as places of high biodiversity and as water towers, these reserves face severe threats due to habitat loss and fragmentation (MST 2000). Remote sensing has the ability to identify destructed and fragmented part of the reserves with the quickest and the most efficient way. In this research, Forest Canopy Density Model was used to detect the percentage of crown closures (canopy), which indicates the level of degradation. The model was used due to its independency from accuracy assessment. The result shows that FCD model was able to detect forest canopywithin one type vegetation. It was not able to differentiate forest canopy among two types of vegetation. Teak plantation outside the reserves showed greater FCD value than natural forest. Further research which incorporates other parameters is needed to overcome this problem.

This study aims to investigate the response of Bird Communities Guild Composition in Geothermal Area Kamojang Nature Reserve and Kamojang Nature Park West Java Indonesia. We compared the number of species, the number of individuals and the composition of bird guilds of directly affected (DL) and not affected (TL) in Kamojang geothermal working area, Kamojang nature reserve and Kamojang nature park in Bandung regency of West Java Province. The directly affected sites were surrounding production wells or geothermal power plants (30 samples) whereas indirectly affected sites were with distance of 3,000 m to 9,000 m from those facilities (42 samples). The data collection was carried out during two seasons; dry and rainy season in (2015-2016). We collected bird community data with the point count method which was placed systematically on each site. We found 124 bird species in CA / TWA Kamojang and 90 species (1560 individuals) of birds at the sample point. The number of species and the number of individual in TL locations is greater than the DL (DL locations = 65 species, 525 individuals; TL sites = 72 species, 1035 individuals). There is a difference of responses between bird communities in the DL and TL sites which is indicated by differences in the mean number of species and number of individuals in each point count.The mean number of species and the number of individual birds per point count in the TL location is greater than DL.The CA / TWA area of Kamojang has seven bird guilds: insectivores, frugivores, granivores, nectarivores, carnivores, piscivores and omnivores. The results of the significance test on the number of species and the number of individuals per guild showed no significant differences between the DL and TL sites, but the birds in DL were commonly found (generalists) and birds found in TL sites were mostly specialist. This proves that the TL location has better environmental conditions or relatively undisturbed.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji komposisi guild komunitas burung di Area Panas Bumi Cagar Alam dan Taman Wisata Alam Kamojang. Penulis membandingkan jumlah jenis, jumlah individu dan komposisi guild burung pada lokasi yang terdampak langsung (DL) dan tidak terdampak langsung (TL) di Wilayah Kerja Panas Bumi Kamojang, Cagar Alam Kamojang dan Taman Wisata Alam Kamojang, Kabupaten Bandung, Provinsi Jawa Barat. Lokasi yang terkena dampak langsung berada di sekitar sumur produksi atau pembangkit listrik tenaga panas bumi (30 sampel) sedangkan lokasi yang tidak terdampak langsung adalah dengan jarak 3.000 m sampai 9.000 m dari fasilitas tersebut (42 sampel). Pengumpulan data dilakukan selama dua musim; musim kemarau dan penghujan (2015-2016). Kami mengumpulkan data komunitas burung dengan metode point count yang ditempatkan secara sistematis di setiap lokasi. Kami menemukan 124 jenis burung di CA/TWA Kamojang dan 90 jenis (1560 individu) burung pada titik contoh. Jumlah jenis dan jumlah individu burung di lokasi TL lebih besar dibanding lokasi DL. (lokasi DL (65 jenis; 525 individu) dan lokasi TL (72 jenis; 1035 individu). Terdapat perbedaan respon antara komunitas burung di lokasi DL dan TL yang ditunjukkan dengan perbedaan rata-rata jumlah jenis dan jumlah individu tiap titik contoh. Rata-rata jumlah jenis dan jumlah individu burung tiap titik contoh pada lokasi TL lebih besar dibandingkan lokasi DL. Kawasan CA/TWA Kamojang mempunyai dari 7 macam guild burung yaitu : insektivora, frugivora, granivora, nektarivora, karnivora, piscivora dan omnivora.Hasil uji signifikansi terhadap jumlah jenis dan jumlah individu setiap guild menunjukkan tidak adanya perbedaan nyata antara lokasi DL dan TL, namun pada lokasi DL burung-burung yang ditemukan merupakan burung yang umum ditemukan (generalis) dan burung yang ditemukan di lokasi TL sebagian besar merupakan burung spesialis. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa lokasi TL memiliki kondisi lingkungan yang lebih baik atau relatif tidak terganggu.

Biodiversitas 17: 435-446. Based on the ecological history, in the past many villages of in Indonesia including in West Java had a high diversity of birds. Nowadays, however, the diversity of birds in some villages of West Java has tended to decrease due to many factors, namely habitat loss, the use of pesticides, and intensive illegal bird hunting. The objective of this paper is to elucidate the local knowledge of Karangwangi village, West Java on species, role, and hunting of birds. Method used in this study is the qualitative and ethnoornithological approach with descriptive analysis. Results of study show that the Karangwangi people have a very good knowledge on bird species, particularly on level species/specific. Various bird species are traditionally classified into nine local categories (folk classification), namely based on distinctive voice/vocalization, morphological characteristic, special color, distinctive behavior, time activity, special common habitat, migrant, nest characteristics, and role in the ecosystem. Based on the rural people perception, the role of birds can be divided into two categories, namely notorious and beneficial birds. The diversity of rural birds has tended decrease over time due to various factors, including illegal bird hunting for various purposes of the village people, such as keep a bird in cages and bird trading. The study suggests the perception of rural people on birds have changed caused of socio-economic and cultural changes. Nowadays the bird hunting in the rural area has tended to shift from a purely subsistence form towards a more commercial form and, thus, to conserve bird species the study on ethnoornithology considered as a very important, and socio-economic and cultural rural people aspects might be integrated to national as well as international bird conservation programs.

Rafflesia patma is an endemic plant of Pangandaran, West Java which is protected because of its rare status. The purpose of this research is to study the population structure, distribution patterns, and the effect of the physical environment of abundance R. patma in Pananjung Pangandaran Nature Reserve, West Java. The method used in this research was a survey method with a purposive sampling technique. Sampling was conducted using quadrat plots. The population pattern distribution was defined by a standardized Morisita index, and the analysis of abiotic environmental factors was determined by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) using PAST3. The results showed that there were 114 R. patma individuals scattered in several research areas in Pananjung Pangandaran Nature Reserve, they were Gua Parat (3 individuals), Cilegon (13 individuals), Pasir Putih (12 individuals), Badeto (48 individuals), and Curug Leutik (38 individuals). The distribution pattern of R. patma in Pananjung Pangandaran Nature Reserve was clustered with the Morisita index value (Id) > 1. Based on the PCA analysis, results that support the classification of the cluster analysis were obtained. Based on four abiotic environmental conditions analyzed, the most dominant character in influencing the distribution patterns and population structure of R. patma is light intensity.
