Fe–Al–O-based materials are currently undergoing a great deal of development because of their many special properties. However, lack of strength at high temperatures, limited ductility at ambient temperatures and corrosion resistance have hindered a wider application of these materials. Recently, a new Fe–Al-based oxide precipitation hardened (OPH) steel was developed by the authors to improve the mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. The new OPH alloys are produced by dissolving a specific amount of oxygen in the matrix during mechanical alloying followed by precipitation of fine dispersion of aluminum or yttrium oxides during hot consolidation. A series of tests was performed to evaluate the thermomechanical properties and corrosion resistance in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The results show improved corrosion resistance, as well as mechanical properties, while the production costs of this material are lower than for traditional materials.

ABSTRACT Elastomers and their composites are extensively used as a thermal insulation system in heat treatment, power generation, fire protection, and aerospace. Among different elastomers, low-density ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) has interesting properties, such as excellent resistance to aging and oxidative degradation due to its saturated back bone. Furthermore, introduction of polyimide (PI) to the base elastomer increases its thermal stability. On the other hand, carbon nanofiber (CNF) reinforces the matrix to enhance the mechanical properties with an additional advantage of better char yield. To achieve better rubber-filler compatibilization, modification of EPDM was carried out by grafting with maleic anhydride (MAH). Morphological studies by scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy exhibited uniform dispersion of nanofillers throughout MAH grafted EPDM matrix. Thermal properties of the EPDM/PI nanocomposites were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Besides these, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and specific heat were also measured. PI- and CNF-filled maleated EPDM composites showed very good physical and thermomechanical properties for high-temperature insulation compound.

Recent developments in the processing, understanding and mechanical/thermomechanical properties of oxide fibre reinforced oxide ceramic matrix composites for high temperature applications are reported. Two dimensional composite plates and uni-directional tubular composite (so called mini-composite) specimens are successfully manufactured and their microstructure, matrix/ fiber interface as well as mechanical properties are examined. It is shown that the microstructural variations, such as porosity size and interface between fibre and matrix determine the fracture behaviour and high temperature performance of the composites. The optimised components produced are considered to be suitable for gas turbine applications.
