In dual-fuel compression-ignition engines, replacing common fuels such as methane with renewable and widely available fuels such as methanol is desirable. However, a fine-grained understanding of diesel/methanol ignition compared to diesel/methane is lacking. Here, large-eddy simulation (LES) coupled with finite rate chemistry is utilized to study diesel spray-assisted ignition of methane and methanol. A diesel surrogate fuel ( n-dodecane) spray is injected into ambient methane-air or methanol-air mixtures at a fixed lean equivalence ratio [Formula: see text] = 0.5 at various ambient temperatures ([Formula: see text] = 900, 950, 1000 K). The main objectives are to (1) compare the ignition characteristics of diesel/methanol with diesel/methane at different [Formula: see text], (2) explore the relative importance of low-temperature chemistry (LTC) to high-temperature chemistry (HTC), and (3) identify the key differences between oxidation reactions of n-dodecane with methane or methanol. Results from homogeneous reactor calculations as well as 3 + 3 LES are reported. For both DF configurations, increasing [Formula: see text] leads to earlier first- and second-stage ignition. Methanol/ n-dodecane mixture is observed to have a longer ignition delay time (IDT) compared to methane/ n-dodecane, for example ≈ three times longer IDT at [Formula: see text] = 950 K. While the ignition response of methane to [Formula: see text] is systematic and robust, the [Formula: see text] window for n-dodecane/methanol ignition is very narrow and for the investigated conditions, only at 950 K robust ignition is observed. For methanol at [Formula: see text] = 1000 K, the lean ambient mixture autoignites before spray ignition while at [Formula: see text] = 900 K full ignition is not observed after 3 ms, although the first-stage ignition is reported. For methanol, LTC is considerably weaker than for methane and in fully igniting cases, heat release map analysis demonstrates the dominant contribution of HTC to total heat release rate for methanol. Reaction sensitivity analysis shows that stronger consumption of OH radicals by methanol compared to methane leads to the further delay in the spray ignition of n-dodecane/methanol. Finally, a simple and novel approach is developed to estimate IDT in reacting LES using zero-dimensional IDT calculations weighted by residence time from non-reacting LES data.

AbstractAmbient temperature significantly affects developmental timing in animals. The temperature sensitivity of embryogenesis is generally believed to be a consequence of the thermal dependency of cellular metabolism. However, the adaptive molecular mechanisms that respond to variations in temperature remain unclear. Here, we report species-specific thermal sensitivity of Notch signaling in the developing amniote brain. Transient hypothermic conditions increase canonical Notch activity and reduce neurogenesis in chick neural progenitors. Increased biosynthesis of phosphatidylethanolamine, a major glycerophospholipid components of the plasma membrane, mediates hypothermia-induced Notch activation. Furthermore, the species-specific thermal dependency of Notch signaling is associated with developmental robustness to altered Notch signaling. Our results reveal unique regulatory mechanisms for temperature-dependent neurogenic potentials that underlie developmental and evolutionary adaptations to a range of ambient temperatures in amniotes.

Abstract Baseline drift caused by slowly changing environment and other instability factors affects significantly the performance of gas sensors, resulting in reduced accuracy of gas classification and quantification of the electronic nose. In this work, a two-stage method is proposed for real-time sensor baseline drift compensation based on estimation theory and piecewise linear approximation. In the first stage, the linear information from the baseline before exposure is extracted for prediction. The second stage continuously predicts changing linear parameters during exposure by combining temperature change information and time series information, and then the baseline drift is compensated by subtracting the predicted baseline from the real sensor response. The proposed method is compared to three efficient algorithms and the experiments are conducted towards two simulated datasets and two surface acoustic wave sensor datasets. The experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Moreover, the proposed method can recover the true response signal under different ambient temperatures in real-time, which can guide the future design of low-power and low-cost rapid detection systems.

The accurate estimation of the state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) is of great significance to energy management and safety in electric vehicles. To achieve a good trade-off between real-time capability and estimation accuracy, a collaborative estimation algorithm for SOC and SOH is presented based on the Thevenin equivalent circuit model, which combines the recursive least squares method with a forgetting factor and the extended Kalman filter. First, the parameter identification accuracy is studied under a dynamic stress test (DST) and the federal urban driving schedule (FUDS) test at different ambient temperatures (0 °C, 25 °C, and 45 °C). Secondly, the FUDS test is used to verify the SOC estimation accuracy. Thirdly, two batteries with different aging degrees are used to validate the proposed SOH estimation algorithm. Subsequently, the accuracy of the SOC estimation algorithm is studied, considering the influence of updating the SOH. The proposed SOC estimation algorithm can achieve good performance at different ambient temperatures (0 °C, 25 °C, and 45 °C), with a maximum error of less than 2.3%. The maximum error for the SOH is less than 4.3% for two aged batteries at 25 °C, and it can be reduced to 1.4% after optimization. Furthermore, calibrating the capacity as the SOH changes can effectively improve the SOC estimation accuracy over the whole battery life.

In a captive colony of Chersina angulata in Cape Town, South Africa, we observed in 2015/16 retention of the last egg clutch inside the female until the hatching stage was reached, conforming to the generally accepted definition of viviparity. Retrospective climatic analysis indicates egg retention until the hatching stage co-occurred with unusually hot summer weather: the average air temperatures in December 2015 and January and February 2016 were higher than during the preceding five and the following 5 years when facultative viviparity could not be observed. Late December and January appears to be the critical period for females to either deposit their last clutch of the nesting season into a nest, or to retain the last clutch for embryonic development inside the female. Over the 28 December to 24 January period the minimum, average and maximum air temperatures in 2015–16 were about 3°C higher than in the five following years. This association of facultative viviparity with unusual summer heat suggests that hot ambient temperatures at the end of the nesting season may cue females to switch from oviposition to facultative viviparity. Compared to incubation in a nest this phenotypic plasticity of the reproductive mode—to retain during hot summers the season’s last clutch inside the female—may buffer the developing embryos from excessive heat exposure: females can thermo-regulate by moving among microhabitats whereas sun exposed shallow nests cannot escape high ground temperatures. This novel reproductive strategy has the potential to enhance the resilience of species to global warming.

In mine air conditioning systems, the vapour compression refrigeration cycle seems to be currently the most widespread method of artificial cooling. In literature some other methods for cooling a mine are also presented, like using free-cooling in refrigeration systems. Mine workings in Jiu Valley are using the primary and secondary ventilation system for cooling the underground. Today the activities are focused mainly on mine closure as a part of transition to the low carbon economy, and this situation brings new challenges regarding the mine ventilation system, which was designed to meet the needs of a full-scale operation. As a result, locally ambient temperatures can rise, and spot cooling systems can be used, in order to cool the air. Such a system has been considered and calculations have been made to evaluate its thermal efficiency at different ambient temperatures.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the effects of chromium yeast and digestible lysine levels on the performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs. Sixty-four barrows with an initial weight of 72.77 ± 7.20 kg and final weight of 119.44 ± 9.47 kg were used, distributed in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme, with two levels of chromium yeast (Cr0: 0 ppb and Cr800: 800 ppb) and two levels of digestible lysine (L0: recommended level and L+10%: 10%). The recorded air temperature of 30.9 ± 3.7 ºC during the experimental period was considered as heat stress. Performance variables were not influenced (P>0.05); however, L+10% showed an increase (P<0.05) in daily digestible lysine intake. Carcass characteristics of the animals were not influenced (P>0.05) by the chromium or digestible lysine levels. Supplementation with 800 ppb of yeast chromium and a 10% increase in the level of digestible lysine, isolated or associated, did not improve the performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs, subjected to high ambient temperatures.

Multidomain comfort theories have been demonstrated to interpret human thermal comfort in buildings by employing human-centered physiological measurements coupled with environmental sensing techniques. Thermal comfort has been correlated with brain activity through electroencephalographic (EEG) measurements. However, the application of low-cost wearable EEG sensors for measuring thermal comfort has not been thoroughly investigated. Wearable EEG devices provide several advantages in terms of reduced intrusiveness and application in real-life contexts. However, they are prone to measurement uncertainties. This study presents results from the application of an EEG wearable device to investigate changes in the EEG frequency domain at different indoor temperatures. Twenty-three participants were enrolled, and the EEG signals were recorded at three ambient temperatures: cold (16 °C), neutral (24 °C), and warm (31 °C). Then, the analysis of brain Power Spectral Densities (PSDs) was performed, to investigate features correlated with thermal sensations. Statistically significant differences of several EEG features, measured on both frontal and temporal electrodes, were found between the three thermal conditions. Results bring to the conclusion that wearable sensors could be used for EEG acquisition applied to thermal comfort measurement, but only after a dedicated signal processing to remove the uncertainty due to artifacts.
