RESUMENEn Honduras ocurren cinco especies de felinos, jaguar (Panthera onca), puma (Puma concolor), ocelote (Leopardus pardalis), caucel (Leopardus wiedii) y el yaguarundí (Puma yagouaroundi). Se comparó la composición de las cinco especies de felinos en 15 áreas naturales  protegidas, las cuales se agruparon en tres regiones con diferentes zonas de vida, ecosistemas y gradientes altitudinal siendo estas; la región Moskitia, la región Central y la región Caribe. Se evaluó la detección de felinos con la presencia/ausencia en cada área. Se realizó un dendrograma y un análisis no métrico multidimensional para comparar la similitud entre áreas protegidas y especies. El hallazgo significativo es la ausencia del jaguar en las áreas protegidas de la región Central de Honduras, donde posiblemente se ha dado su extirpación. El puma, el ocelote, el caucel y el yaguarundí, se registran en las tres regiones del país. Al comparar la composición de los felinos en las tres regiones usando el análisis de similitud, este presentó diferencias significativas entre las áreas protegidas evaluadas. La región Central mostró menor composición que la región del Caribe y la Moskitia. La región de la Moskitia hondureña se muestra como la región con mayor resilencia para mantener las cinco especies de felinos.Palabras clave: Composición, conglomerados, escalamiento multi-dimesional no métrico (nmds), análisis de similitud (anosim), disimilitud, Moskitia. ABSTRACTHonduras is territory of five species of cats, jaguar (Panthera onca), puma (Puma concolor), ocelots (Leopardus pardalis), margay (Leopardus wiedii) and the yaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi). The composition of the five cats in 15 protected areas was compared grouped in three regions:  the Moskitia, Caribbean and Central region with different life zones, ecosystems and altitudinal levels. Cat detection was evaluated by presence/absence in each protected area. Cluster analysis and non- metric multidimentional scaling were used to compare similarity between protected areas and species. The significant finding is the absence of the jaguar in protected areas in the Central Region of Honduras confirming local extirpation. Puma, ocelots, margay and the yaguarundi are present in the three regions.  Comparing composition of cats between the three region using similarity analysis this presented significant difference between protected areas. The Central region showed a lower composition in cat structure that The Caribbean and Moskitia region. The Honduran Moskitia region showed a higher resilience to maintain the five cats.Key words: Composition, conglomerates, non-metric multidimentional scaling (nmds), analysis of similarity (anosim), dissimilarity, Moskitia.

RESUMEN. Se confirma la presencia de cuatro grandes felinos, Panthera onca, Puma concolor, Leopardus pardalis y Leopardus wiedii, en el bosque de niebla de la comunidad La Esperanza, Santiago Comaltepec, Oaxaca. Se usó fototrampeo para evaluar la presencia de estas especies en dos transectos de 2.5 y 1.5 km respectivamente, desde agosto de 2014 a febrero de 2016. Esta información es necesaria para la conservación in situ de estas especies.

Abstract To a better insight into the epidemiology and genetic diversity of protozoan hemoparasites infections in wild mammals, this study aimed to the post mortem detection of DNA from species of the order Piroplasmida (Babesia sp., Cytauxzoon sp., and Theileria sp.) and suborder Adelorina (Hepatozoon sp.) using polymerase chain reaction based on the 18S rRNA gene followed by genetic sequencing of blood and spleen samples collected from carcasses of 164 free-ranging and captive wild mammals from Mato Grosso state. Among them, one Leopardus pardalis, three Panthera onca, two Puma concolor were positive for Cytauxzoon sp., and six Tapirus terrestris tested positive for Piroplasmida, while one L. pardalis was positive for Hepatozoon sp. Furthermore, an uncharacterized piroplasmid genetically related to Theileria sp. previously detected in cats from Brazil was described in lowland tapirs. Despite the controversy regarding the epidemiological threat of these protozoa, the detection of these tick-borne agents in wild free-living and captive mammals, even when asymptomatic, demonstrates the importance of monitoring, particularly in hotspots such as the state of Mato Grosso, to verify the circulation and genetic diversity, to anticipate the possible emergence of diseases, and even their consequences to other animals as well as humans.

Colombia is currently the fourth palm oil crop producer in the world and the top producer in South America (Torres-Carrasco et al. 2013), leading to an accelerated series of changes in many landscapes (Balaguera-Reina & González-Maya 2010). To date few studies have assessed biodiversity in palm-oil plantations in the country, in which large and medium-sized felids (Panthera onca, Leopardus pardalis, and Puma yagouaroundi) have been recorded, however, pumas (Puma concolor) have been exclusively recorded in forests and forest-edges (Boron & Payán 2012). Nevertheless, studies regarding ecological interactions and use by these species in these human-made landscapes are still missing.

Segregation of the daily activity patterns is considered and important mechanism facilitating the coexistance of competing species. Here, we evaluated if temporal separation existed among jaguar (Panthera onca), puma (Puma concolor) and ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) and if their activity patterns were related to that of a particular prey. We used camera trap records to estimate the activity schedules of these predators and their prey. We used the coefficient of overlapping (Δ; ranging from 0 to 1) to quantify the temporal interactions between predators and prey, and calculated confidence intervals from bootstrap samples. Strong temporal overlap occurred among the three felids (Δ = 0.63 - 0.82) in both dry and rainforests. However, a greater temporal separation was observed between the closest competitors (jaguar and puma, puma and ocelot). Jaguar and puma had a strong temporal overlap with medium and large-sized prey, while ocelots’ activity matched that of small-sized prey. High overlapping coefficients among the felids suggest that temporal segregation is not the main mechanism facilitating their coexistence in these areas. However, fine-scale or spatiotemporal differences in their activity patterns might contribute to their coexistence in tropical environments.

<p class="normal">La estimación de la densidad de fauna silvestre permite tener una idea del estado de salud de las poblaciones y en algunos casos indica el estado de conservación de los ecosistemas. Los métodos de evaluación deben hacer estimaciones no sesgadas, ya que servirán de base para estrategias de conservación de especies clave. Algunas regiones en México han sido identificadas como áreas de alta prioridad para la conservación de especies con cierto nivel de riesgo, como es la Península de Yucatán (PY), donde prevalece la mayor población de jaguares en México. Sin embargo, poco se sabe acerca de la situación actual de los felinos amenazados y en peligro de extinción, como un grupo de especies que conviven en la parte noreste de la Península. Nuestro objetivo fue estimar la densidad de las poblaciones de felinos silvestres a mediano plazo en la Reserva Ecológica El Edén (EEER) y sus alrededores. Se llevaron a cabo muestreos con cámaras-trampa durante cuatro años (2008, 2010, 2011 y 2012), se usaron modelos de captura-recaptura para poblaciones cerradas (CAPTURA + MMDM o ½MMDM) y un modelo de C-R espacialmente explícito (CERC) por medio del paquete SPCACAP para realizar las estimaciones de densidad. Las especies estudiadas fueron: jaguar (<em>Panthera onca</em>), puma (<em>Puma concolor</em>), ocelote (<em>Leopardus pardalis</em>), jaguarundi (<em>Puma yaguaroundi</em>) y tigrillo (<em>Leopardus wiedii</em>). La frecuencia de captura se obtuvo para las cinco especies y la densidad para tres (individuos/100km<sup>2</sup>). La densidad estimada por medio de MMDM varió entre 1.2 y 2.6 para jaguares, pumas (1.7-4.3) y ocelotes (1.4-13.8). Las estimaciones de la densidad en SPACECAP variaron desde 0.7 hasta 3.6 para jaguares, de 1.8 a 5.2 para pumas y de 2.1 a 5.1 en ocelotes. El método de C-R espacialmente explícito (SECR, SPACECAP) tiene menos probabilidades de sobrestimar la densidad, lo que provee una herramienta útil en el proceso de planificación y toma de decisiones para la conservación de estas especies. La parte noreste de la Península de Yucatán mantiene poblaciones altas de felinos, la REEE y sus alrededores son clave para la conservación de este grupo de depredadores.</p>

We studied the diet of the ocelot and puma during the years 2007 and 2008 at the Feliciano Miguel Abdala Reserve, in Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. We collected 49 faecal samples (scats) from cats, and identified the species of cat from 23 of them by the analysis of the microstructure patterns of hairs found in their faeces: 17 scats of the puma (Puma concolor) and six of the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis). In the puma scats, we identified three species of primates (Brachyteles hypoxanthus, Alouatta guariba and Sapajus nigritus), the remains of which were found in eight of 17 collected (47.1%), representing 26.7% of items consumed. For the ocelot, we detected capuchin monkey (S. nigritus) remains in three of the six scats (50%), accounting for 18.7% of items consumed by ocelot. We were unable to identify the cat species in the remaining 26 faecal samples, but we were able to analyse the food items present. Primates were found in five of these 26 faeces (19.2%) and represented 10.2% of the items found. Although the sample size is limited, our results indicate a relatively high consumption of primates by felines. We believe that this high predation may be the result of the high local density of primates as well as the greater exposure to the risks of predation in fragmented landscapes, which tends to increase the incidence of the primates using the ground.
