A novel high-voltage powerline inspection system is investigated, which consists of the cooperated ground vehicle and drone. The ground vehicle acts as a mobile platform that can launch and recycle the drone, while the drone can fly over the powerline for inspection within limited endurance. This inspection system enables the drone to inspect powerline networks in a very large area. Both vehicle’ route in the road network and drone’s routes along the powerline network have to be optimized for improving the inspection efficiency, which generates a new two-layer point-arc routing problem. Two constructive heuristics are designed based on “Cluster First, Rank Second” and “Rank First, Split Second”. Then local search strategies are developed to further improve the quality of the solution. To test the performance of the proposed algorithms, practical cases with different-scale are designed based on the road network and powerline network of Ji’an, China. Sensitivity analysis on the parameters related with the drone’s inspection speed and battery capacity is conducted. Computational results indicate that technical improvement on the inspection sensor is more important for the cooperated ground vehicle and drone system.

On 21 January 2012, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority was informed about gastrointestinal illness among 111 swimming club members, who were staying at a hotel in Trondheim. A hotel dinner on 20 January was their only common meal. Kitchen staff were interviewed, and food leftovers and kitchen environment were sampled. A case was defined as a swimming team member staying at the hotel from 20 to 22 January, who fell ill with diarrhoea, abdominal pain or nausea during this period. A total of 43 cases were identified, with median duration of symptoms of 35 hours. cpe-positive Clostridium perfringens (3.8 x 108 CFU), but not Bacillus cereus, was isolated from beef stew eaten by cases. cpe-negative C. perfringens was detected in a sample from the kitchen floor. SDS-PAGE showed indistinguishable protein profiles among C. perfringens cultures isolated from the beef stew, but slightly different profiles from the culture isolated from the kitchen floor. Cohort analysis showed that eating beef stew and rice was significantly associated with illness. No pathogens were detected in the rice. The temperature control of the stew, but not of the rice, was poor. Our results strongly indicate that cases were infected by Clostridium perfringens in beef stew that had inadequate temperature control during preparation.

A modular high-pressure chamber is described. This chamber will allow stable microelectrode recordings to be made for a variety of intracellular preparations at pressure of 200-300 atmospheres absolute. Its features include internal temperature control, easy visibility, continuous perfusion, electrical penetrations, and manipulation of several internal controls while the system is at pressure. The small size and high versatility of the Wilson chamber make it a convenient and inexpensive research unit for experiments in the moderately high-pressure ranges that affect biological preparations.

In swap trailer transportation routing problems, trucks and trailers conduct swap operations at special positions called trailer points. The parallelization of stevedoring and transportation can be achieved by means of these trailer points. This logistics organization mode can be more effective than the others. In this paper, an integer programming model with capacity and time-window constraints was established. A repairing strategy is embedded in the genetic algorithm (GA) to solve the model. The repairing strategy is executed after the crossover and mutation operation to eliminate the illegal routes. Furthermore, a parameter self-adaptive adjustment policy is designed to improve the convergence. Then numerical experiments are implemented based on the generated datasets; the performance and robustness of the algorithm parameter self-adaptive adjustment policy are discussed. Finally, the results show that the improved algorithm performs better than elementary GA.

Hazardous material transportation is one of the main concerns due to the nature of hazardous materials and their incident impacts. In general, transport risk is a main attribute to develop mathematical models for hazardous material routing problem as well as network designing or improving road safety. This paper presents a chaotic-simulation based model to determine the high selected links to improve road network quality for hazardous material transportation, in which risk is considered as a chaotic variable over the network whereas a simulation technique has been applied to cover a wide range of selecting paths. A real road network, consists of fifty-nine nodes and eighty two-way edges, is used for running the mathematical model and checking validation. Due to the large amounts of hazardous material transported by trucks, the proposed methodology is focused on fuel transportation, and high selected list of edges (links) has been obtained to improve road safety. Sensitivity analysis revealed that using different seeds for generating transport risk has no significant effects on finding the most frequent paths and high selected edges.

This paper studies the multi-depot joint distribution vehicle routing problem considering energy consumption with time-dependent networks (MDJDVRP-TDN). Aiming at the multi-depot joint distribution vehicle routing problem where the vehicle travel time depends on the variation characteristics of the road network speed in the distribution area, considering the influence of the road network on the vehicle speed and the relationship between vehicle load and fuel consumption, a multi-depot joint distribution vehicle routing optimization model is established to minimize the sum of vehicle fixed cost, fuel consumption cost and time window penalty cost. Traditional vehicle routing problems are modeled based on symmetric graphs. In this paper, considering the influence of time-dependent networks on routes optimization, modeling is based on asymmetric graphs, which increases the complexity of the problem. A hybrid genetic algorithm with variable neighborhood search (HGAVNS) is designed to solve the model, in which the nearest neighbor insertion method and Logistic mapping equation are used to generate the initial solution firstly, and then five neighborhood structures are designed to improve the algorithm. An adaptive neighborhood search times strategy is used to balance the diversification and depth search of the population. The effectiveness of the designed algorithm is verified through several groups of numerical instances with different scales. The research can enrich the relevant theoretical research of multi-depot vehicle routing problems and provide the theoretical basis for transportation enterprises to formulate reasonable distribution schemes.
