Cheikh Khaled Bentounès: l’ouverture, la solidarité, le partage – vers une culture de paix

Since 1975 Cheikh Bentounès has been the spiritual guide of the Alawiyya tariqa, founded in 1909 in Mostaganem, Algeria, by Cheikh Ahmed Al-Alawi, whose values of tolerance, peace and interreligious dialogue are known internationally. Living in Europe, the Cheikh navigates complex spaces and borders (Morocco, Algeria and France), advocating for a more harmonious relation to our environment. This article examines the concepts and projects he puts forward through his writings and the International Day of Living Together in Peace that he obtained from the United Nations in 2017. It evokes as well the views of rapper and writer Abd Al Malik on the importance of his approach (he refers to his personal experience growing up in a disadvantaged neighbourhood in France), and draws a parallel to the concepts of Senghor, first president of Senegal, on the interweaving of cultures – explained by the work of Soulemane Bachir Diagne through the influences of Bergson and Iqbal. Khalid Zekri’s analyses shed light on the historical, social and cultural context. In a world where consumerism (excessive notion of commodification) and divisions play an important role, Cheikh Bentounès reminds us of the need to shift our rapport to the world to better face problems that have arisen, including ecological disasters, before it is too late. We are reminded through the clarity of his words (power of orality) that humanism is an urgent necessity for our survival.

World literature teems with the portrayal of famous cities throughout the world. This kind of literature is unanimously known as city literature. It does not merely describe and portray places, objects, and landscapes for their own sake, it, however, gives readers a revisionist perspective to look afresh and introspectively into self, history, and culture. This paper aims to shed light on a city that witnessed great changes throughout its history. It is called Sana’a, the capital of Yemen, and it is one of such world-famous and ancient cities about which interesting and rich literature has been written. Sana’a has been immortalized in the prose and poetry of local and international prolific and intelligent writers such as Abdu al-Aziz al-Makkali, a famous contemporary Yemeni poet. Sana’a is magnificently portrayed in different exotic images in al-Makkali’s collection of poetry entitled Book of Sana’a. The poet engages in a kind of dialogue with the city in a personal experience and unique particularity, but in the process, this particularity becomes cosmopolitan. Each poem is located in a particular space which gives the poet and reader alike a sense of the place, history, and culture, and an intense feeling of wider identification and empathy. Sana’a is anthropomorphically portrayed as a beautiful woman, sad woman, beloved lady, spirit, and city of heaven. It is fantastically depicted as a unique piece of artifact molded and designed by the hands of God. So, this piece of research attempts to analyze social and political imports and the different images of the city employed by al-Makkali in his poetic work: Book of Sana’a. As a theoretical framework, the paper adopts both historical theory of criticism as well as the formalist theory, so the analysis is focused on both context and text of the selected poems.

An increasing number of researchers and policymakers have been moved to study and intervene in the lives of children affected by violent conflicts (Masten, 2014). According to a United Nations Children's Fund (2009) report, over 1 billion children under the age of 18 are growing up in regions where acts of political violence and armed conflict are, as Ladds and Cairns (1996, p. 15) put it, “a common occurrence—a fact of life.” In recent years, the United Nations Children's Fund, advocacy and human rights groups, journalists, and researchers have drawn public attention to the high rates of child casualties in these regions, and to the plights of those children still caught in the crossfire. It has thus become clear that both the challenges and the stakes are higher than ever to promote the safety and well-being of affected children around the world (Masten & Narayan, 2012; Tol, Jordans, Kohrt, Betancourt, & Komproe, 2012).

This chapter revisits the failure of negotiations for a United Nations Code of Conduct on Transnational Corporations—the final blow in the attempt to create a New International Economic Order to facilitate equitable resource distribution in the world economy in the final quarter of last century. The chapter invites us to consider failure in international law and to rethink the parameters through which law comes into being. Drawing on the archival record of the Code negotiations, the chapter details the battle between states’ representatives to agree provisions and reconsiders what disagreement meant in this context, and what this can tell us about the struggle to create international law at any moment. It argues that the proceedings shed light on a dissensus present in international law that is often overlooked and framed as consent. By revisiting these proceedings, readers are invited to consider the uncertain certainty provided by international law as both necessary and contingent: it allows the greatest space for state representatives to determine how international law will operate (contingency) yet it is precisely what enables international law to come into being as law (necessity). Pondering this uncertainty gives international lawyers pause for greater reflection on the possibilities contained within international law (and by extension, international lawyering) at any given moment in time.

This is particularly striking in the study of religion and psychosis, where we and others have shown that cultural context determines both the structure and content of hallucination-like events. The cultural shaping of hallucinations may provide a rich case-study for linking cultural learning with emerging prediction-based models of perception.

This narrative aims to explore the meaning and lived experiences of marriage that a unique immigrant population—“foreign brides” in Taiwan—possesses. This convergence narrative illustrates the dynamics and complexity of mail-order marriage and women's perseverance in a cross-cultural context. The relationship between marriage, race, and migration is analyzed. This narrative is comprised of and intertwined by two story lines. One is the story of two “foreign brides” in Taiwan. The other is my story about my cross-cultural relationship. All the dialogues are generated by 25 interviews of “foreign brides” in Taiwan and my personal experience.

By detailed analyses of Polish and world statistics, the authors search for the answer if in fact,as some politicians and citizens claim, the world and in particular European Union and Polandare overcome by the wave of violence. Data gathered, among others, by Polish Public OpinionResearch Center (CBOS), Eurostat and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNOCD), aswell as anthropologists and police, clearly prove the opposite. Scientific comparisons concerningviolence over the centuries show that its scale drastically decreased and the world gets saferwith time. Statistical reports of the United Nations especially clearly indicate European Union(including Poland) as particularly peaceful region against the rest of the world, having the lowestmurder rates. Eurostat data confirm these results, also showing decrease in other crimes overthe years. Polish police data similarly prove existence of this trend and CBOS indicates thatit is reflected in increasing sense of security among Poles. In the second part of the article theauthors explain potential reasons for using such false slogans as “increasing wave of violence” bypoliticians and raising fear in voters as well as psychological mechanisms responsible for theirpotential effectiveness.

In our plural society, interfaith marriages and multicultural families have become a new normal and are either considered problematic for the religious communities or welcomed as a contribution to a secular and more peaceful world. In the course of my work with European Muslims, I could accompany such families through a few generations. In this article, I am going to outline some typical challenges and crises in such relationships and their effects on young people growing up in mixed families, adding my observations of how they can be dealt with. Ultimately, there is a chance that, through dialogue, it provides a meaningful learning environment that prepares young people for the diverse reality of the world today.

We are living in the world of 21st century which is known as the world of ‘Mental Stress’ in these circumstances, knowledge amplifies day by day. There is a knowledge explosion in the world, hence each and every person tries to get this knowledge by new andmost recent mediasand they also use it. In this direction there is a qualitative growing up in the person for in receipt of knowledge and its use by appreciative. In the same way, we notice the qualitative addition in the educational organization, teachers and students, which are going to get knowledge. In these circumstances teachers and students feel a perplexity. Learner or student of today is not only physically unhealthy but also mentally or emotionally. So it becomes duty or responsibility of a teacher to incorporate such practices in his classroom so that stress, tension, anxiety, frustration etc. of their students reduces which ultimately affect upon their academic as well as socio-psychological performance. The present paper throws light on benefits of yoga into classroom, studies conducted on the same, challenges before a teacher.


According to a long historical tradition, understanding comes in different varieties. In particular, it is said that understanding people has a different epistemic profile than understanding the natural world—it calls on different cognitive resources, for instance, and brings to bear distinctive normative considerations. Thus in order to understand people we might need to appreciate, or in some way sympathetically reconstruct, the reasons that led a person to act in a certain way. By comparison, when it comes to understanding natural events, like earthquakes or eclipses, no appreciation of reasons or acts of sympathetic reconstruction is arguably needed—mainly because there are no reasons on the scene to even be appreciated, and no perspectives to be sympathetically pieced together. In this volume some of the world’s leading philosophers, psychologists, and theologians shed light on the various ways in which we understand the world, pushing debates on this issue to new levels of sophistication and insight.
