This article discusses a selection from a series of performances created between 2008 and 2019 that as practice as research (PaR) explore ideas of identity, representation and place as they relate to the intersection of what are termed ‘virtual’ and ‘real’ spaces. These include I’m Garrett Lynch (IRL) (2010), I’m Not Garrett Lynch (IRL) – Identity Badge Performance (2018–19), I’m Not Garrett Lynch (IRL) – Zazzle Store (2019), the three complementary performances of Three Wearable Devices for Augmented Virtuality (2011) and As Yet Unnamed (2019). The performance series initially occurred online and later incorporated gallery spaces and sites in six countries. From the outset, my Irish identity formed a crucial background to my practice but remained an implied rather than directly discussed perspective. This article’s purpose is to discuss practice from an Irish perspective and in so doing foreground and clarify how nationality and place were in fact essential to its development. Examining the use of written and to a lesser extent spoken language in performances, discussion explores how language is a problematizing starting point but equally enables an extension of my identity by implying my Irish nationality and Ireland as place. Irish nationality is described in this article as comparable to what is defined as ‘real’ and forms a component in the territorialization of both ‘virtual’ space and places of the phenomenological Other. Methods of moving between ‘virtual’ and ‘real’ spaces, influenced by the philosophical theory of Gilles Deleuze, are described in detail and performances are employed to demonstrate how this occurs. Finally, the use of naming and how it has impacted my identity in ‘real’ space and ongoing life is explored through the discussion of a performance in 2019.

Este artigo busca abordar algumas das principais reflexões teórico-metodológicas (algumas com um caráter mais nitidamente político) sobre o tempo no campo das ciências humanas na contemporaneidade. Tem-se como ponto de partida um breve esboço da concepção moderna de tempo. Já que é a constituição e “crise” dessa noção em seus vários desdobramentos que aparece como condição de possibilidade das reflexões que serão aqui abordadas, como: o “campo de experiência” e o “horizonte de expectativa” de Reinhart Koselleck, o tempo redimido em Walter Benjamin e o devir e o acontecimento no tempo não-reconciliado de Gilles Deleuze. AbstractSymmetry deepens our insight into a physical system and its interplay with topology enables the discovery of topological phases. Symmetry analysis is conventionally performed either in the physical space of interest, or in the corresponding reciprocal space. Here we borrow the concept of virtual space from transformation optics to demonstrate how a certain class of symmetries can be visualised in a transformed, spectrally related coordinate space, illuminating the underlying topological transitions. By projecting a plasmonic system in a higher-dimensional virtual space onto a lower-dimensional system in real space, we show how transformation optics allows us to construct a topologically non-trivial system by inspecting its modes in the virtual space. Interestingly, we find that the topological invariant can be controlled via the singularities in the conformal mapping, enabling the intuitive engineering of edge states. The confluence of transformation optics and topology here can be generalized to other wave realms beyond photonics.

<p>We present a strategy to generate “concentrically local orbitals” for the purpose of decreasing the computational cost of wave function-in-density functional theory (WF-in-DFT) embedding. The concentric localization is performed for the virtual orbitals by first projecting the virtual space onto atomic orbitals centered on the embedded atoms. Using a one-particle operator, these projected orbitals are then used as starting point to iteratively span the virtual space, recursively creating virtual orbital “shells” with consecutively decreasing correlation energy recovery at each iteration. This process can be repeated to convergence, allowing for tunable accuracy. Assessment of the proposed scheme is performed by application to the potential energy diagram of the Menshutkin reaction of chloromethane and ammonia inside a segment of a carbon nanotube and the torsional potential of a simplified version of the retinal chromophore.</p>

Abstract The present work aims to address the combined use of phraseological units and metatextual indicators in spoken language, that is, the mechanisms used to introduce phraseological units to listeners. Exhaustive knowledge of how metatextual indicators are employed in discourse is, no doubt, highly valuable in identifying phraseological units in cases where immediacy is a main factor, as is common in different types of interpreting. The main characteristics of metatextual indicators are considered, along with their different categories to date, taking as a starting point such works as those of Čermák (2005) and Goddard (2009). An analysis is also provided of the 100 most recent uses of the metatextual indicator as the saying goes from a search in the multimodal NewsScape corpus. Studying these 100 uses leads to the general conclusion that this indicator tends to precede phraseological units – overwhelmingly proverbs – and that the phraseological units tend to be used without any modifying mechanisms. However, there are numerous cases, while still a minority, of quotations and, within them, allusions to elements that go beyond their classic conception – such as the notable inclusion of cases where the speaker manipulates the canonical meaning of phraseological units.

In this paper, a collaboration support system for 3D shape evaluation by using network virtual reality is proposed on the basis of both studies in 3D shape evaluation and communication support in virtual space. Collaboration mainly consists of two tasks; one is each partner’s task that is performed by the individual, the other is communication with each other. Both of them are very important objectives for all the collaboration support system. The proposed system provides the two viewpoints for each task. One is the viewpoint of back side of user’s own avatar for the smooth communication. The other is that of avatar’s eye for 3D shape evaluation. Switching the viewpoints satisfies the task conditions for 3D shape evaluation and communication. The system basically consists of PC, HMD and sensors, and users can share the embodied interaction by observing interaction between their avatars in virtual space. However, the HMD and magnetic sensors, which are put on the users, would restrict the nonverbal communication. Then, we have tried to compensate the loss of nodding of partner’s avatar by introducing the speech-driven embodied interactive actor InterActor. Sensory evaluation by paired comparison of 3D shapes in the collaborative situation in virtual space and in real space and the questionnaire are performed. The result demonstrates the effectiveness of InterActor’s nodding in the collaborative situation.

Recently, we have often the opportunity to shop for something on the computer display connected to the Internet. However, it is often said that the product arrived at the home is something different from it presented on the computer display. We have studied into the differences between the shape evaluation in virtual space and in real space. And it is indicated that the shape evaluation in virtual space is slightly difference from it in real space, especially, in case of evaluation of product which has the complex contour [1]. In this research, we are focusing on the complexity of contour. The complexity is defined by mathematical methods, for example, Hurst exponent in fractal geometry. In this paper, we have proposed the algorithm which makes the curve lines based on the Hurst exponent. And using these curve lines made by proposed method, we have confirmed that the mathematical complexity is equal to the complexity which people feel by sensory evaluation. The result shows that Hurst exponent almost can show the complexity which people feel, however, it is difficult in case of the cyclic curves.
