Distillation wastewater, by-products from steam and water distillation as well as raw material used as control of flower heads of Helichrysum italicum were comparative analyzed for content of the biologically active compounds by GC/MS. Acetone exudates, methanol extracts and ethyl acetate fractions obtained after alkaline hydrolyze of the studied materials were received. The three types of extraction products as well as the distillation wastewater were examined for free radical scavenging activity by DPPH assay. Phenol, fatty- and organic acids, sterols, triterpenes, sugars and sugar alcohols were identified. Succinic acid and myo-inositol were identified as main components of distillation wastewater. Hydroxycinnamic acid, caffeic acid and 4(p)-hydroxybenzoic acid were dominant compounds of the ethyl acetate fractions. Triterpenes and fatty acids, sterols and flavonoids are among the main biologically active substances in the methanolic extracts and acetone exudates. The ethyl acetate fractions were found to possess the highest free radical scavenging activity (IC50 < 50 µg/mL). Significant differences in the activity between wastes and raw materials were not found. The results showed that the waste products after distillation of H. italicum contain important biologically active substances and the extracts with high antioxidant activity can be obtained from them.

A series of 20 new biologically active derivatives of 2-{4, 5-(substituted diphenyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ylthio}acetyl chloride has been synthesized, with the aim to investigate antimicrobial, free radical scavenging activity. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic data and elemental analysis. The final compounds were tested for antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus MTCC 3160, Bacillus subtilis MTCC 441; Gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coli MTCC 443, and, for antifungal activity, against Candida albicans MTCC 227 and Aspergillus niger MTCC 281, taking ciprofloxacin as antibacterial and fluconazole as antifungal standard drugs. Compound 7a6 was found to be the most effective antibacterial (MIC = 3.12 µg/ml), and compounds 7a2 and 7d1 (MIC = 3.12 and 6.25 µg/ml) had the most effective antifungal effects on the selected strains, as compared to the standard drugs. The results of antioxidant studies revealed that compound 7b1 was found to be most active antioxidant, with 40.4±0.687 µg/ml, and compounds 7b3, 7d7, and 7d4 also showed promising free radical scavenging activity, as compared with the standard drug ascorbic acid.

Yinchenhao (Artemisia capillaris Thunb.) is a pharmaceutical agent that not only shows therapeutic effects against hepatobiliary diseases but also offers various physiological benefits. This study examined the extraction rates of antioxidant extracts from Yinchenhao leaves using different solvents. The extraction rates using different solvents were as follows: ethanol (12.1 ± 0.87%) > water (7.7 ± 0.45%) > n-butanol (1.3 ± 0.16%) ethyl acetate > (1.3 ± 0.14%) > n-hexane (1.1 ± 0.15%). The n-butanol and ethyl acetate extracts showed higher 1,1-Diphenyl-2 picrylhydrazyl radical free radical scavenging activity, 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonate) free radical scavenging activity and ferric ion reducing antioxidant activity, while n-hexane extracts showed weak antioxidant activity. In conclusion, Yinchenhao leaf has potential as a natural antioxidant, and n-butanol and ethyl acetate may be effective extraction solvents for studying its antioxidant activities.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the phytochemical groups of hydroethanolic leaf extract of Senna sieberiana DC and its fractions and to investigate their free radical scavenging activity. Methods: S. sieberiana leaves were extracted with hydroethanolic solvent. From the hydroethanolic extract 3 fractions were obtained after a liquid/liquid fractionation (dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and water). Phytochemical screening of the leaf extract and its fractions was done using standard reactions. Free radical scavenging activity was assessed using DPPH and ABTS assays.  Results: Tannins, flavonoids, anthracenic derivatives, sterols and triterpenoids were the main phytochemical constituents of the leaf extract and fractions. The hydro-ethanolic leaf extract of Senna sieberiana, its dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions and ascorbic acid had respective IC50 values of 191.6±3.82 - 495.73±8.96 - 165.8±4.85 - 50.40±2.65 - 19.53±0.13 µg/ml in ABTS assay.  In DPPH assay,  the IC50 values were  44.8 ± 1.22 - 218.93±9.01 - 32.13 ± 1.8 - 26.4±0.11- 4.66±0.07 µg/ml respectively for the leaf extract, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions and ascorbic acid. Conclusion: The hydroethanolic leaf extract of S. sieberiana had shown free radical scavenging activity. The aqueous fraction was more active among plant tested samples.

IIndonesia is the biggest country in the production of red seaweed of Eucheuma spinosum. The red seaweed has bioactive compounds that have a potential activity such as phenolic compounds as well as carrageenan and pigments. This paper reported phytochemical analysis of E. spinosum harvested by a local farmer in Sumenep Island, East Java and free-radical scavenging activity (FRSA) derived from 2,2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhdrazyl (DPPH) for several organic solvents. For extraction, dried powder is added with 5.0 mL of various solvents following by ultra-sonication assisted extraction for 30 minutes. The extract was separated by centrifugation for phytochemical analysis and radical scavenging evaluation. The prospecting of dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane extracts indicated the potency for radical scavengers. Alkaloids, terpenoids, and saponins were secondary metabolites that indicated the presence in the extracts. The best IC50 value was presented by ethyl acetate extracts (384,86 ppm) with 38.78% for 50 ppm, while IC50 values of n-hexane, methanolic, dicloromethane extracts were 410.12, 677.76 and 685.08 ppm, respectively. Keywords: Eucheuma spinosum, phytochemical analysis, radical scavenging activity

Free radicals can rapidly and irreversibly oxidize various structures, including unsaturated fatty acids in vegetable oils, which affect the sensory properties. Spectrophotometry is the most widely used method for the determination of free radical scavenging activity (RSA) using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Barrier to the further use of classical analytical methods to analyze biologically active compounds in foodstuffs is that equipment requires high cost and has limited mobility. One of solutions is to replace classical methods, such as spectroscopy, with smartphonebased colorimetry. Huawei P30 Lite smartphone was used for colorimetric detection. The free radical scavenging activity (RSA) in vegetable oil was detected using an application ‘Color Picker’, with image matching algorithm for red, green, and blue (RGB) model. RSA was expressed as percentage and measured by the DPPH method. The aim of the study was to determinate the total free radical scavenging activity with smartphone-based colorimetry. For the data comparison and accuracy spectrophotometer as analytical optical instrument was used. Eleven vegetable oils: sea buckthorn, sunflower, rice, macadamia nut, hemp, corn, grape, linseed, rapeseed, olive and milk thistle oils were selected for analysis. The best results with no significant differences (p>0.05) compared to smartphone-based colorimetry from spectrophotometry were determined using RG values. The poor results were detected by using B value (p<0.05) and were not suitable for determination of RSA. Smartphone-based colorimetry can be used in the determination of the RSA in vegetable oils.

Objective: The present study was carried to evaluate free radical scavenging activity and phytochemical analysis of successive extraction with hexane (AVH), ethyl acetate (AVE) and methanol (AVM) of Alysicarpus vaginalis var. nummularifolius (DC.) MIQ., a herb used in home remedies.Methods: The entire plant was dried and powdered, successively extracted (soxhlet apparatus) and concentrated using rotary vacuum evaporator. The extracts were quantitatively analyzed for phytochemicals like total phenolic, flavonoids, alkaloids and carbohydrates following standard methods. The free radical scavenging activity was evaluated with DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), nitric oxide radical and hydrogen peroxide scavenging reactions.Results: The quantitative phytochemical studies of the crude extracts showed that AVM extract with highest phenolic, flavonoid, alkaloid and carbohydrate content which is followed by AVE and AVH. The IC50 values of AVH, AVE and AVM for scavenging DPPH, nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide were 589.21±0.09 µg/ml, 254.65±0.08 µg/ml and 261.40±0.08 µg/ml; 533.81±0.09 µg/ml, 362.07±0.09 µg/ml and 456.36±0.08 µ/ml; 464.66±0.08 µg/ml, 380.29±0.08 µg/ml and 367.6±0.08 µg/ml respectively. Conclusion: The present study revealed that AVM extracts having high polyphenolic compounds when compared with AVE and AVH. The free radical scavenging reaction was greater in ethyl acetate and methanol extracts. This suggests that due to the high antioxidant reactions, these extracts can be useful for the treatment of oxidative stress–related diseases.

Abstract Background Synthetic antioxidants have toxigenic effects, there is therefore growing interest in substituting them with natural antioxidants. Attention is being focused on extracting them from agricultural industry residuals to minimize costs. Legume seed hulls could be cheap sources of such natural antioxidants. Objective This study aims to unravel potential free radical scavenging activity, antioxidant activity, and total phenolic and flavonoid contents of some legumes’ hulls extracted by different solvents and evaluate their efficacy to enhance sunflower oil stability. Method Legume hulls extracted by different solvents were evaluated for their antioxidant activity coefficient (AAC), free radical scavenging activity [by 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)], and phenolic and flavonoids contents. The protection factor and induction periods (rancimat test) of the highest activity extracts were evaluated. Results Sunflower seed hull ethyl acetate extract, lupine seed hull ethanol extract, and mung bean hull petroleum ether extract exhibited stronger DPPH scavenging activity, AAC, and protection factor values than other solvents. Ethyl acetate extracts of sunflower seed hulls showed an antioxidant and scavenging activity close (P&gt;0.05) to that detected for α-tocopherol. Conclusions Legume hulls may possess strong free radical scavenging and antioxidant activity. The analogous effect between sunflower hull extract and α-tocopherol make it a potential, cheaper substitute of α-tocopherol in food systems. Highlights The analogous effect between sunflower hull extract and α-tocopherol give it the potency to allow substitution at a concentration of 0.5% of sunflower hull ethyl acetate or 1% of lupine hull ethanol extract instead of 0.5% α-tocopherol to enhance induction periods and protection factors of sunflower oil.

Cissus quadrangularis L. is a member of succulent climber of family Vitaceae and it is also called as bone setter because of its bone healing property. The present study focused to assess the in vitro antioxidant and in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of the plant stem extracts in different solvents namely petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol. Among all these extracts; ethyl extract showed highest phenolic and flavonoid content (19.35±0.29mg GA/g, 8.68±0.06 RE/g dry wt. respectively). In DPPH free radical scavenging assay all mentioned extracts exhibited free radical scavenging activity but the highest free radical scavenging activity was showed by ethyl acetate extract in increasing dose dependent manner. On the basis of highest phenolic, flavonoid content and free radical scavenging activity ethyl acetate extract was selected for anti- inflammatory activity. The anti-inflammatory activity of Cissus quadrangularis Lin. was investigated in carageenan induced inflammation in Wistar albino rats. Two different doses 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg were administered to the animals. The results showed that both doses had significant reduction in inflammatory condition but dose 500mg/kg showed maximum inflammatory reduction on comparing with control and standard treated groups.

Biological activity was studied of the different solvent extracts such as n-hexane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and methanol extracts of the rhizomes of Sensevieria hyacinthoides. The cytotoxic potential were examined by using brine shrimp lethality bioassay. Ethyl acetate extract exhibited quite potent activity in brine shrimp lethality bioassay with LC50 1.95 μg/mL, respectively. These result suggested that it might contain antitumor or cytotoxic agent. The ethyl acetate extract showed significant free radical scavenging activity with IC50 10.51 μg/mL and demonstrated excellent antibacterial activity. The free radical scavenging activity of the solvent extracts (n-hexane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol) were assayed by using DPPH method. The IC50 for Vit-c (Ascorbic acid) and ethyl acetate extract were found to be 3.91 and 10.51 μg/mL, respectively. Asian Australas. J. Biosci. Biotechnol. 2020, 5 (1), 15-20
