Noise pollution is a serious and complex city problem. While there are objective, measurable parameters for noise mapping assessments, since the effects of noise are also subjectively perceived, it has been difficult to accurately evaluate the urban problems and conflicts arising from noise. Urban noise and its perception is related to the quality of life; thus its analysis is can provide useful insights for decision-makers. Therefore, through an analysis of online media content, the paper presents local the attitudes in Szeged towards urban noise. During the analysis different noise categories and the city’s noise characteristics were determined. Even though the noise pollution in residential areas was found to be mainly concentrated in the city centre, it also affected more remote areas, and social problems and political discourses were also identified. Besides the noise of urban traffic, Szeged people appeared to be disturbed by noise related to leisure activities, such as urban (and university) programs and festival noise, which indicated that noise reduction efforts should be focus on more than just the reduction of traffic noise.

The transportation policies focusing on minimizing the environmental impact aim at an improved quality of life and health of the population, the urban one in particular. Noise pollution is one of the biggest problems associated with the European urban environment at the present moment, mainly because of the ever-increasing road traffic. SUNET system (System for Urban Noise and Eco-Traffic) was designed to improve the management of the noise pollution in Cluj-Napoca and to provide up-to-date public data on a user-friendly interface. The implementation of the application over the entire municipality is highly advantageous as it creates a link between the town’s administration (the local authorities, the City Hall of Cluj-Napoca) and the user (the citizens) through this system which is dynamic, modern and compliant with the European regulations. The graphic interface uses the HTML (HyperText Markup Language) code, while the database is set up in an SQL (Structured Query Language) format and contains information about the characteristics of the system and users alike, all organized in specific tables. The need for an online urban noise pollution monitoring system, such as the SUNET one, appears to allow the provision of fairly realistic and up-to-date information and encourage the community to actively assist in the application of proper action plans and the decision-making process when it comes to the population’s exposure to high levels of noise pollution.

Monitoring studies are considered as a system of environmental monitoring of anthropogenic factors, based on the legislation of Ukraine, monitoring of physical impacts, including noise levels, are necessary and important in terms of monitoring the air of populated cities. The article is devoted to the substantiation of the need to organize monitoring observations of the levels of noise pollution caused by the operation of vehicles in the residential areas of populated cities. Scientific and methodological approaches to the organization of experimental research to determine noise levels as the first stage of the monitoring system have been developed. The state normative-legal base is analyzed, it is revealed that the organization of experimental researches of noise characteristics of the transport streams going along apartment houses, isn't fixed at the legislative level. The system of monitoring noise pollution levels should consist of the following main stages: 1) data collection (measurement of noise levels in the field); 2) processing of the received data (calculation of equivalent and maximum noise levels on the basis of the received field observations); 3) compilation of databases; 4) detection of discomfort zones (comparison of the obtained equivalent and maximum noise levels with the allowable ones). Unified schemes of location of the control point for instrumental measurements of traffic noise levels, depending on the category of roads adjacent to residential buildings, are proposed. This approach takes into account all possible layout options of the urban area, which allows to identify noise-absorbing properties of green areas of roadside space and provide environmentally friendly noise protection solutions to reduce man-made pollution and quantify the noise load in residential areas affected by the road. The results of approbation of experimental measurements according to the offered schemes which give the chance of revealing of uncomfortable zones in territories of inhabited building for acceptance of the further ecologically safe noise protection practical decisions are resulted.

Excessive traffic noise is a major environmental complaint in residential areas. This paper investigates a SOA based hierarchical services structure for urban traffic strategic noise mapping. Service Oriented Computing Environment (SORCER) is employed to build a highly flexible distributed platform. As the key service in our structure, Noise Propagation Calculation Service and its technical detail will be introduced. The service implements functions of sound objects generation, attenuation terms calculation and line source segmentation. The Noise Propagation Calculation Service aims to generate good-quality calculation solutions in a reasonable time. At last, this paper introduces a real traffic noise mapping project to demonstrate the service and the architecture.

Abstract Noise pollution assessment was carried out in selected traffic junctions of Imphal city of Manipur, India. The noise pollution assessment was carried out using noise parameters and indices such as L10, L50, L90, Leq for selected traffic junctions during the different periods of the day, i.e., morning, noon, and evening hours. The study of equivalent noise level (Leq), noise parameters, and various noise indices have enabled the evaluation of the overall traffic noise environment of the city. The traffic noise indices such as traffic noise index (TNI), noise climate (NC), traffic noise pollution level (LNP), noise exposure index (NEI) along with day time (LD), night time (LN) average, and day-night (Ldn) noise levels were assessed for the selected traffic junctions. Moreover, spatial noise mapping was carried out using the geostatistical interpolation technique to evaluate the changes of traffic noise scenarios during the different time zones of the day. The Leq values in few traffic junctions exceeded the required noise standards. The study shows equivalent noise level ranging between 52.2–69.9 dB(A) during the morning (7–10 am), 52.4–69.3 dB(A) during noon (12 noon-2 pm), and 54.6–71.1 dB(A) during the evening (4–7 pm) hours, respectively.

The purposes of this research are to examine the impact of traffic noise on the sale and rent prices of the housing real estate in the Sulaimaniyah city center. Besides, highlight the concept of traffic noise pollution in general and in particular in the Sulaimaniyah city center. Thus, people have the right to choose the nature of the acoustic environment, as others should not impose it, the problem of traffic noise considered as one of the main problems that have imposed on the people in Sulaimaniyah city center. Which began to take severe economic and social dimensions, affects the decision-making process in the real estate market. Moreover, consequently, this research analyzes the impact of traffic noise pollution in the sale and rent prices of residential property in Sulaimaniyah city center, the results of the research have confirmed a clear and negative impact the traffic noise on residential real estate prices in Sulaimaniyah city center. Finally, the research indorsed range of important recommendations, such as necessity control the noise pollution at the level of governments and companies, either at the companies’ level by choosing vehicles that release less sound and the use of sound control devices of high efficiency. Either at the government level to determine the volume level or prevent annoying noises (painful), through legislation and laws of environmental protection and impose fees and raise awareness.

Abstract The problem of combating urban noise is closely linked to the rational transformation of the urban environment, which must go through the elimination or reduction of the number of sources of noise, the localization of the noise emission zone, reducing the level of sound sources and protection against noise for the residential areas. Theoretical and experimental studies of acoustic loading on the territory along the highway for the typical section of the urban territory have been conducted. To estimate the complex noise impact from all sources and from individual sources, as well as to predict the total noise exposure for this site, a noise map was constructed using software. As a measure to combat traffic noise in the territory along the highway, the location of the noise protection screen was justified, taking into account the loss of part of the national income as a result of the continuous impact of noise on a person.The results of the research allow to assess the degree of technogenic impact of noise pollution during the operation of the highway, which allows regulating, by administrative and legislative methods, the nature of the impact on natural objects and human health of certain types of activities, as well as reasonably proposing measures that ensure environmental safety when organizing urban streets traffic.

Noise pollution has become an important issue. One of the main sources of noise in residential areas is represented by transportation and by the interaction between tyre and road surface. Several studies illustrate that traffic noise is affected by road properties such as acoustic absorption, surface texture, and mechanical impedance. This latter, function of the angular frequency ω, is defined as the ratio of a force applied on a structure to the induced velocity. Despite a growing interest in mechanical impedance there is still lack of results about its impact on traffic noise. Consequently, the aim of the study presented in this paper is to investigate the relationship between road acoustic response and mechanical impedance. Tests (EN 29052-part 1, ISO 7626-5) have been performed on different types of samples and materials, using an impact hammer and an accelerometer. Investigations are still in progress. First results seem to demonstrate that both frequencies and other noise-related characteristics could be affected by changes of mechanical impedance, boundary conditions, tests, and type of material.

Studies of traffic noise in residential areas, i.e. in areas designated for human activity, are very relevant due to the growth of noise pollution caused by the growth of traffic infrastructure. Noise parameters are measured in order to assess their compliance with hygienic standards, to verify the calculated data obtained, to identify noise sources. Experimental and theoretical works on the analysis of transport noise and assessment of risks from their influence have been carried out in ICM&MG SB RAS for the last several years. The information support for the research proposed by the authors is aimed at integrating data and knowledge on the assessment of risks from the impact of traffic noise. Researchers have meaningful access to the experimental data that have been collected during fieldwork on the registration of traffic noise, to their computational analyses, and to systematic information related to this issue.
