This chapter aims at presenting an overview of how our experiences as professors of Spanish, French, and English studies at the Department of Modern Languages (DML) of the University of São Paulo (USP) responded to the challenges put forward by the pedagogical and technological practices required since the outbreak of the COVID-19 health crisis, and the adoption of measures of social isolation in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Our pedagogical practices are shared through a description of the institutional context and our students’ narratives. The chapter is divided into three main sections. The first one presents a brief overview of the institutional context. The second briefly problematizes the decision-making process to go fully online, and the challenges of the remote program. Section three explores the experiences of the three professors and their students by discussing pedagogical practices and students’ feedback. In conclusion, the text discusses the lessons learned for future actions.

Cuidado com os poetas! Literatura e periferia na cidade de São Paulo shows how urban peripheral communities of the city, often all referred to erroneously as favelas in the media, are spaces where cultural and literary production flourish. A professor of literature at the University of Buenos Aires with a background in anthropology, Tennina combines literary analysis with first-person interviews to effectively counter popular discourses that associate these communities solely with criminality and drug trafficking.

Abstract. The Colônia Deep Drilling Project held its first International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) workshop in September 2014 at the University of São Paulo (Brazil). Twenty-seven experts from six countries discussed the feasibility and the expectations of a deep drilling in the structure of Colônia located at the southwestern margin of the city of São Paulo. After presenting the studies performed at the site during the last decades, participants focused on the objectives, priorities and detailed planning for a full deep-drilling proposal. An excursion to the site and new auger coring showed the importance of the Colônia site for studying the evolution of a tropical rainforest and to evaluate the interplay between the South American summer monsoon, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the southern Westerlies belt during the last 5 million years. In addition, deep drilling will eventually solve the still unresolved issue of the origin of the structure of Colônia as a result of meteorite impact or endogenous processes.

The occurrence of Toxoplasma antibodies in domestic outpatient cats in the city of São Paulo was evaluated using the indirect immunofluorescence assay. A total of 248 blood samples obtained from male and female cats seen at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the University of São Paulo between February 1996 and January 1997 were tested. Of these, 17.7% were positive, with a 64 titer being detected in most animals. The frequence of Toxoplasma antibodies was significantly higher in older cats, those fed raw meat and those with free access to the outdoor environment. There was no significant difference in reactivity between males and females. We conclude that diet and free access to the outdoor environment were equally important as predisposing factors to the risk of Toxoplasma infection.

This paper describes some ground-penetrating radar (GPR) results to characterize steel tanks buried in the subsoil of an urban center. Tanks were installed in the first Brazilian geophysical test site located at the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics, and Atmospheric Science (IAG) of the University of São Paulo (USP). This paper also presents an effec-tive procedure for removal of hyperbolic artifacts associated with GPR reflections between multiple steel tanks. One hundred sixty-five GPR profiles of [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] (shielded bistatic antennae) were measured. The work was done in two distinct places: on the geophysical test site of the IAG/USP in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, and in an area formerly occupied by a truck cleaning, refueling, and maintenance facility, located in Oscoda, northeastern Michigan, USA. Predictive deconvolution and Kirchhoff migration were first used to improve vertical and lateral resolution. To minimize the hyperbolic artifacts caused by reflections between tanks, high-pass filtering was applied to data. Then, Hilbert transforms emphasize the location of the steel tanks in an energy cross-section form. Further GPR processing, such as vertical and depth slices, were very important to improve visualization and localization of steel tanks and pipes in the subsurface.

This article reports a reading and writing experience developed in a current academic formative process, in the spaces and times where we capture signs, affects and thoughts. The essay ‘O incendiador de caminhos’ (2011), by Mozambican writer Mia Couto, was manipulated during one of the moments of a science and education course, whose program involves epistemologies, methodologies and pedagogical practices in the field of natural sciences to children, in a Pedagogy Licensure course. However, the text would not discuss pedagogical practices but it would mobilize a ‘what if’ discourse: ‘what if’ I could think teaching, pedagogical practices or sciences – along with life – departing from the author’s essay. A text could projects a potency, activating ways of thinking, producing a language and world experience. The pedagogues to be showed us the gaps that reading can produce upon teaching ‘in myself’, ‘in the other’ and ‘openly’. ‘O incendiador de caminhos’ relates to the possibility of fabricating ourselves in the trajectory of occupying rigid spaces, courses and thoughts at the university. They burn some certainties and claim, as teachers and teachers to be, the experience of reading, thinking and writing sparks of present and future in Education. AbstractFor the Journal of Architecture of the University of Costa Rica is an honor to present a Spanish translation of the article “Gentrificação Estratégica”, originally published in portuguese in Berlim e Barcelona. Duas imagens estratégicas. São Paulo: Annablume, 1a edição, 2012, pp.13-26.This essay discusses the superlative emphasis assumed by the cultural industry in incorporating the city into productive and financial transnationalization. It is argued that through the discourse on culture, the vocabulary of civility is justified and incorporated into the set of practices of urban regeneration and strategic planning (gentrification – privatization) under the promise of growing employment and businesses which crystallize the mythical image of profitable ultra modernity. In doing so, archetypal examples (Barcelona, Paris, Lisbon, Bilbao, Boston, Manhattan, Baltimore) serve to illustrate the notion of city understood as a growth machine.

ABSTRACT: Introduction: The mortality rate among tuberculosis patients (TB fatality) has been attributed to irregular chemotherapy, delay in diagnosis, multidrug resistance, and HIV coinfection. Objective: To analyze TB fatality rates by sex, clinical presentation and HIV coinfection in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. Methods: Cohorts of residents in the city of Campinas who either died during treatment for tuberculosis or had the disease confirmed after death were divided into three intervals: 2001-2003, 2004-2006, and 2007-2009. Data were obtained from the database of the Tuberculosis Surveillance System of the University of Campinas, and notifications were gathered through TB-WEB Health São Paulo Secretary. Statistical significance was determined using a chi-square test, considering p < 0.05. Results: Between 2001 and 2009, 3,416 TB patients were diagnosed: 2,827 (82.8%) were new TB cases and 589 (17.2%) were retreatments. Between the first and second triennium, the number of new patients decreased by 18%, and 23% among retreatments. Between the second and third intervals, the reduction was 5% and 21%, respectively. General case fatality rate declined from 11.4% to 9.9% across intervals, and was most significant among patients that had previously abandoned treatment (17.3% to 5.1%). Fatality rates among patients coinfected with TB-AIDS were 2-3 times that of patients not infected with TB-AIDS throughout the intervals. Fatality between the first and third triennium among TB-AIDS co-infected patients declined (24.8% to 19.5%), while increasing slightly among non-AIDS TB patients (7.3% to 8%) during this period. Conclusion: Though mortality among TB-AIDS patients declined from 2001-2009, rates among non-AIDS TB remained stagnant. Improved TB diagnosis and treatment is needed to further decrease TB mortality in Campinas.
