AbstractThe aim of the study was to analyse the association of ACACA and SCD1 polymorphism with milk composition, fatty acid profile in milk fat and milking performance of Polish Holstein-Friesian cows. The animals were divided according to criteria: lactation – 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th; ACACA polymorphism – CC, CG, GG; SCD1 polymorphism – AA, VA, VV. The presence of A293V polymorphism of SCD1 gene in the population of Polish Holstein-Friesian cattle has been confirmed. In the analysed fragment of ACACA gene presence of a novel SNP has been revealed. The SNP AJ312201.1g.1488C>G consists of a substitution G>C in 1488 position. This ACACA polymorphism influenced C13:0, C14:1, C16:1 and CLA, while the analysed SCD1 polymorphism influenced C14:1. Interestingly, C16:0, C18:0 and C14:1 were influenced by fat content; while C16:1 was influenced by lactation stage; and CLA was influenced by both lactation stage and fat content. Although the novel SNP on ACACA gene and A293V on SCD1 showed only slight influence on fatty acid profile in this study, these genes are still potential candidate genes for fat content and composition in milk, but require further research.

The aim of the study was to examine the effect of dietary supplementation of isomerized poppy seed oil (IPO) enriched with conjugated dienes of linoleic acid (CLA) on cow and sheep milk parameters (fat content, fatty acid profile, Δ9-desaturase index, and atherogenic index). The process of poppy seed oil alkaline isomerization caused the formation of CLA isomers with cis-9,trans-11, trans-10,cis-12, and cis-11,trans-13 configurations in the amounts of 31.2%, 27.6%, and 4.1% of total fatty acids (FAs), respectively. Animal experiments were conducted on 16 Polish Holstein Friesian cows (control (CTRL) and experimental (EXP), n = 8/group) and 20 East Friesian Sheep (CTRL and EXP, n = 10/group). For four weeks, animals from EXP groups received the addition of IPO in the amount of 1% of dry matter. Milk was collected three times: on days 7, 14, and 30. Diet supplementation with IPO decrease milk fat content (p < 0.01). Milk fat from EXP groups had higher levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, including FAs with beneficial biological properties, that is, CLA and TVA (p < 0.01), and lower levels of saturated fatty acids, particularly short- (p < 0.01) and medium-chain FAs (p < 0.05). The addition of IPO led to a decrease in the atherogenic index.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of supplementation of dairy cows with different fatty acid sources (soybean oil (SO) and fish oil (FO)) on milk production, milk composition, milk fatty acid profile, and physicochemical and sensory characteristics of ice cream. During 63 days, fifteen Holstein cows averaging 198 ± 35 days in milk were assigned to three groups: control diet with no added lipid (n = 5 cows); and supplemented diets with SO (n = 5 cows; unrefined SO; 30 g/kg DM) or FO (n = 5 cows; FO from unrefined salmon oil; 30 g/kg DM). Milk production, milk fat, and milk protein were not affected by treatments. Saturated fatty acids in milk fat were decreased with SO and FO compared with control. C18:2 cis-9, cis-12 was increased with SO whereas C18:2 cis-9, trans-11, C20:3n-3, C20:3n-6, C20:5n-3, and C22:6n-3 were the highest with FO. Draw temperature and firmness were higher in SO compared to control and FO ice creams. Melting resistance was higher in FO compared with control and SO ice creams. Supplementation of cow diets with SO and FO did not have detrimental effects on milk production, or ice cream physicochemical and sensory characteristics.

Abstract The accuracy of the milk fatty acid profile as a diagnostic tool for the diagnosis of sub-acute ruminal acidosis (SARA) has been determined when SARA was experimentally induced. This had not yet been done not on commercial dairy farms, where SARA can occur naturally. The objective of this study was to determine this accuracy in individual cows on commercial dairy farms. A total of 336 cows from 24 commercial dairy farms in Quebec were included. Farms were blocked based on geographical location and management, with each block having one high risk SARA farm and one low risk SARA farm. Farm Risk of SARA was determined based on the milk fat content and the proportions of de novo fatty acids and long chain unsaturated fatty acids in the bulk tank. On each farm, 7 early/mid-lactation (&lt; 150 days in milk DIM) and 7 mid/late lactation (&lt; 150 DIM) cows were randomly selected. The fatty acid profile of pooled milk samples from these cows were determined by gas chromatography. Farm risk of SARA did not affect the milk fat proportion of fatty acids, with the exception of trans 10 cis 12 C18:2, which was higher in At Risk Farms. Later lactation cows had a higher milk fat content and higher milk fat proportions of de novo, C16 fatty, and odd and branch chain fatty acids. The prevalence of SARA was likely higher in earlier lactation cows than in later lactation cows, but non-SARA related animal and dietary factors also affect the milk fatty acid profile. Hence, the milk fatty acid profile alone may not be accurate enough to diagnose SARA on farm. This profile can, however, contribute to this diagnosis, the identification of causes of milk fat depression, and the development of strategies to optimize the milk fatty acid profile.

The combined data of milk composition of 14 African elephants over 25 months of lactation are presented. The milk density was constant during lactation. The total protein content increased with progressing lactation, with caseins as the predominant protein fraction. The total carbohydrates steadily decreased, with the oligosaccharides becoming the major fraction. Lactose and isoglobotriose reached equal levels at mid lactation. The milk fat content increased during lactation, as did the caprylic and capric acids, while the 12 carbon and longer fatty acids decreased. The fatty acid composition of the milk phospholipids fluctuated, and their total saturated fatty acid composition was low compared to the triacylglycerides. The milk ash and content of the major minerals, Na, K, Mg, P, and Ca, increased. Vitamin content was low, Vitamin E occurred in quantifiable amounts, with traces of vitamins A, D3, and K. The energy levels of African elephant milk did not change much in the first ten months of lactation, but they increased thereafter due to the increase in protein and fat content. The overall changes in milk composition appeared to be in two stages: (a) strong changes up to approximately 12 months of lactation and (b) little or no changes thereafter.

Abstract. The present short communication presents a comparison between the milk fat composition of four old sheep breeds. All animals were fed the same diet and a milk sample was obtained at the same lactation day and analyzed for its major components, cholesterol concentration and a complete fatty acid profile. From all studied candidates, the Walachian breed (also when compared with modern breeds employed in the dairy industry) was determined to have the most suitable milk composition for human health.

The combination of milking combined with restricted suckling is a common production system (dual purpose) in many countries. In a previous study (Boden and Leaver, 1994, Animal production 58, 463-464 Abstr.), Holstein Friesian cows milked once daily, and restricted suckled produced 0.56 of the saleable milk of conventional twice daily milked cows. Restricted suckling substantially reduced milk fat and increased milk protein contents. In this study, a range of milking and suckling patterns were examined.
