AbstractElectroencephalography (EEG) has become more popular, and as a result, the market grows with new EEG products. The new EEG solutions offer higher mobility, easier application, and lower price. One of such devices that recently became popular is Emotiv EEG. It has been already tested in various applications concerning brain-computer interfaces, neuromarketing, language processing, and detection of the P-300 component, with a general result that it is capable of recording satisfying research data. However, no one has tested and described its usefulness in long-term research. This article presents experience from using Emotiv EEG in two research projects that involved 39 subjects for 22 sessions. Emotiv EEG has significant technical issues concerning the quality of its screw threads. Two complete and successful solutions to this problem are described.

This paper provides an overview of the KRDS Benefit Analysis Toolkit. The Toolkit has been developed to assist curation activities by assessing the benefits associated with the long-term preservation of research data. It builds on the outputs of the Keeping Research Data Safe (KRDS) research projects and consists of two tools: the KRDS Benefits Framework, and the Value-chain and Benefits Impact tool. Each tool consists of a more detailed guide and worksheet(s). Both tools have drawn on partner case studies and previous work on benefits and impact for digital curation and preservation. This experience has provided a series of common examples of generic benefits that are employed in both tools for users to modify or add to as required.

The chapter presents an overview of human-computer interfaces, which are a crucial element of an ambient intelligence solution. The focus is given to the embodied conversational agents, which are needed to communicate with users in a most natural way. Different input and output modalities, with supporting methods, to process the captured information (e.g., automatic speech recognition, gesture recognition, natural language processing, dialog processing, text to speech synthesis, etc.), have the crucial role to provide the high level of quality of experience to the user. As an example, usage of embodied conversational agent for e-Health domain is proposed.

Research data curation is a set of scientific communication processes and activities that support the ethical reuse of research data and uphold research integrity. Data curators act as key collaborators with researchers to enrich the scholarly value and potential impact of their data through preparing it to be shared with others and preserved for the long term. This special issues focuses on practical data curation workflows and tools that have been developed and implemented within data repositories, scholarly societies, research projects, and academic institutions.

Since the introduction of the persistent scatterer technique (PS-InSAR) in the early 1999, the applicability of radar interferometry has increased considerably.In this research, PS-InSAR technique is proposed to retrieve the volume change of long-term continuously land deformation. This technique is used to analyze subsidence in Bandung City, West Java-Indonesia by assessing 19 ALOS PALSAR images (Japanese L band spaceborne) during the periods of July 2007-February 2011. In this research, data are optimized by reducing set data images with iterative PS-InSAR processing. This PS-InSAR processing chain based on a rigid quality assessment of the estimated parameter like minimum coherence (0.9) and PS density point (200), in order to get an optimum quality of light PS-InSAR (LPS-InSAR) concept technique. Moreover, a strict quality validation of PS-InSAR with other geodetic techniques such as DInSAR and GPS methods. The result of validation has resulted such as 1,4 ± 1,4 cm/year (PS InSAR-DInSAR) and 1,6 ± 0,7 cm/year (PS-InSAR-GPS). For land subsidence velocity in Bandung City has results between 0,6 ± 0,4 cm/year and 2,1 ± 1,2 cm/year. This research shows a capability of data optimalization in PS-InSAR technique as basic concept of LPS-InSAR processing.

There is now widespread recognition that data are a valuable long-term resource and that making them publicly available is a way to realise their potential value - both as part of the scholarly record or for re-use by others. The Research Information Network (RIN) report, To share or not to share: Publication and quality assurance of research data outputs (June 2008), investigates whether or not researchers make their research data available to others and the issues they encounter when doing so. Importantly, it seeks to do this by seeking the perspectives of researchers themselves. This paper reflects on how this relates to the more top-down literature on the subject. The discussion of the significance of the RIN's main findings is correlated to the four themes of the RIN report. Firstly, it discusses some distinctions in the types of data that should be shared and preserved and what needs to done to do so effectively. Secondly, it reflects on the motivations for and constraints on researchers publishing their data, and how funders and publishers can address them. Thirdly, it reviews some issues around how data are discovered, accessed and re-used. Finally, it discusses the scholarly and technical quality of published data.

Abstract Purpose: This article addresses several intervention approaches that aim to improve life for individuals with severe aphasia. Because severe aphasia significantly compromises language, often for the long term, recommended approaches focus on additional domains that affect quality of life. Treatments are discussed that involve increasing participation in personally relevant life situations, enhancing environmental support for communication and participation, and improving communicative confidence. Methods: Interventions that have been suggested in the aphasia literature as particularly appropriate for people with severe aphasia include training in total communication, training of communication partners, and activity specific training. Conclusion: Several intervention approaches can be implemented to enhance life with severe aphasia.

The organizational structure of long-term care (LTC) facilities often removes the rehab department from the interdisciplinary work culture, inhibiting the speech-language pathologist's (SLP's) communication with the facility administration and limiting the SLP's influence when implementing clinical programs. The SLP then is unable to change policy or monitor the actions of the care staff. When the SLP asks staff members to follow protocols not yet accepted by facility policy, staff may be unable to respond due to confusing or conflicting protocol. The SLP needs to involve members of the facility administration in the policy-making process in order to create successful clinical programs. The SLP must overcome communication barriers by understanding the needs of the administration to explain how staff compliance with clinical goals improves quality of care, regulatory compliance, and patient-family satisfaction, and has the potential to enhance revenue for the facility. By taking this approach, the SLP has a greater opportunity to increase safety, independence, and quality of life for patients who otherwise may not receive access to the appropriate services.
