There is now widespread recognition that data are a valuable long-term resource and that making them publicly available is a way to realise their potential value - both as part of the scholarly record or for re-use by others. The Research Information Network (RIN) report, To share or not to share: Publication and quality assurance of research data outputs (June 2008), investigates whether or not researchers make their research data available to others and the issues they encounter when doing so. Importantly, it seeks to do this by seeking the perspectives of researchers themselves. This paper reflects on how this relates to the more top-down literature on the subject. The discussion of the significance of the RIN's main findings is correlated to the four themes of the RIN report. Firstly, it discusses some distinctions in the types of data that should be shared and preserved and what needs to done to do so effectively. Secondly, it reflects on the motivations for and constraints on researchers publishing their data, and how funders and publishers can address them. Thirdly, it reviews some issues around how data are discovered, accessed and re-used. Finally, it discusses the scholarly and technical quality of published data.

I believe posthumanist philosophy promises the possibility of a more robustly ethical and political practice of social inquiry. I do not, however, believe analytic and rhetorical tools have been developed that deliver amply on that promise. This is less a reflection on the quality of efforts to do so, than it is on the scope of the challenge before us. Since this is an essay about what “postqualitative means to me,” I speak from within the desire to see that promise more fully realized and the belief that there is much work yet to be done. Simply stating that concern directly and describing the grounds for it, however, would involve a performative contradiction. It would presume the challenge is an epistemic one that yields to better information and clearer representation. The challenge, however, lies within the limitations of representation itself and the way convention compels us to address our scholarship to a humanist spectator subject, as opposed to seeking to transform the subject of address. This essay, therefore, departs from standard prose conventions in an effort to both do and describe what needs to be done.

The prevalence and quality of locum tenens coverage in pediatric surgery have not been determined. An Internet-based survey of American Pediatric Surgical Association members was conducted: 1) practice description; 2) use and frequency of locum tenens coverage; 4) whether the surgeon provided such coverage; and 5) Likert scale responses (strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, strongly agree) to statements addressing its acceptability and quality (two x five contingency table and χ2 analyses, significance at P < 0.05). Three hundred sixteen of 1163 members (27.2% response rate) responded. One-fourth (24.1%) used a locum tenens regularly. Reasons were long-term inability to recruit a full-time surgeon (35.2%) and short-term vacancies (32.4%). One-fifth (20.4%) did locum tenens work; one-fourth (27.0%) plan to do so in the future. Two-thirds (64.2%) believe that surgical care in a locum tenens situation does not provide the same level of care as a full-time community-based surgeon. Most support locum tenens for short-term coverage (87.3%) and recruitment problems (72.1%), but not long-term vacancies (38.8%; P < 0.001) or permanent coverage (27.0%; P < 0.001). Locum tenens coverage is an established feature of pediatric surgery. Most view it as a stopgap solution to the surgical workforce shortage.

The analysis of students’ questions can be used to improve the learning experience for both students and teacher. We investigated questions (N = 6457) asked before the class by 1st year medicine/pharmacy students on an online platform, used by professors to prepare their on-site Q&A session. Our long-term objectives are to help professors in categorizing those questions, and to provide students with feedback on the quality of their questions. To do so, first we developed a taxonomy of questions then used for an automatic annotation of the whole corpus. We identified students’ characteristics from the typology of questions they asked using K-Means algorithm over four courses. The students were clustered based on the question dimensions only. Then, we characterised the clusters by attributes not used for clustering such as the students’ grade, the attendance, the number and popularity of questions asked. Two similar clusters always appeared (lower than average students with popular questions, and higher than average students with unpopular questions). We replicated these analyses on the same courses across different years to show the possibility to predict students’ profiles online. This work shows the usefulness and the validity of our taxonomy and the relevance of this approach to identify different students’ profiles.

AbstractElectroencephalography (EEG) has become more popular, and as a result, the market grows with new EEG products. The new EEG solutions offer higher mobility, easier application, and lower price. One of such devices that recently became popular is Emotiv EEG. It has been already tested in various applications concerning brain-computer interfaces, neuromarketing, language processing, and detection of the P-300 component, with a general result that it is capable of recording satisfying research data. However, no one has tested and described its usefulness in long-term research. This article presents experience from using Emotiv EEG in two research projects that involved 39 subjects for 22 sessions. Emotiv EEG has significant technical issues concerning the quality of its screw threads. Two complete and successful solutions to this problem are described.

ABSTRACT Objective To determine the factors affecting the quality of home based long-term care (LTC) provision for the adult bedridden patients in Chandigarh, India. Materials and methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 bedridden patients in Chandigarh. Disability was assessed using the Katz index and an interview schedule based on Craig handicap assessment and reporting technique (CHART) was used to assess the care provision to the bedridden patients. Available medical records and brief medical examination were also conducted on the spot. Quality of care was assessed based on the Donabedian model. Factors associated with the quality of care provision, based on literature, were examined for association in the study cases. Results Mean age of the bedridden patients was 69 years. Sixtyeight patients lived in joint families. All had total dependence in the domains of bathing, dressing, toileting and transfer. The commonest cause of disability was neurological diseases. Mean duration of being bedridden was 16.4 months. Though the rates of complications like urinary infections (89%), bedsores (54%) were quite high, 57% patients reported satisfaction with the quality of care they were receiving. However, only 18 males and 6 females subjects were receiving good quality care according to our evaluation. Ownership of property/money by the subject was the only factor found to be associated with good quality of care. Gender of the subject, degree of disability, type of family in which the subject was living in and whether the patient is currently married or not did not seem to significantly affect the quality of care received by the subjects. Conclusion Though more than half of the study subjects reported subjective satisfaction with the quality of care being received, objective evaluation based on the study criteria showed that only a quarter were actually receiving good quality care. Furthermore, the economic worth seemed to positively influence the quality of care being received by the subjects. How to cite this article Singh T, Minhas AS. Improving the quality of learning is an important factor that supports the achievement of progress in the field of education. In order to improve the quality of learning, it is necessary to apply innovative learning that follows the student-oriented learning paradigm. This study aims to describe the application of the Problem-based Learning Model by utilizing the environment as a learning resource to improve learning outcomes in biology. This classroom action research consisting of 2 research cycles and each cycle consists of four stages: (1) planning; (2) implementing actions; (3) observation and evaluation; (4) reflection. The study was conducted at Model 5 High School Palu. The subject of this research is Class X MIPA with 28 students. In this study the focus of learning material on biodiversity. The instruments used were student worksheets, student and teacher activity sheets, and student learning outcomes tests. The research data were displayed as a percentage and analyzed descriptively.  The learning outcomes of Class X Science 6 of SMA Negeri 5 Palu can be improved through the application of PBL learning models through the use of the environment. In cycle 1 students 'classical completeness was 71.66, while students' classical completeness in cycle 2 increased by 88.09. The classical absorption achieved in cycle 1 was 62.16%, increasing to 91.89% in cycle 2.
