Abstract Managing inventory is considered as one of the most challenging tasks facing supply chain managers and specialists. Decisions related to inventory locations along with level of inventory kept throughout the supply chain have a fundamental impact on the response time, service level, delivery lead-time and the total cost of the supply chain. The main objective of this paper is to identify and analyse the share of a particular logistic model adopted in the Czech Republic (Consignment stock, Buffer stock, Safety stock) and also compare their usage and adoption according to different industries. This paper also aims to specify possible reasons of particular logistic model preferences in comparison to the others. The analysis is based on quantitative survey held in the Czech Republic.

This paper investigates the coordination issue in a decentralized supply chain having a vendor and a buyer for a defective product. The authors develop two inventory models with controllable lead time under service level constraint. The first one is propose under decentralized mode based on the Stackelberg model, the other one is propose under centralized mode of the integrated supply chain. Ordering cost reduction is also including as a decision variable along with shipping quantity, lead time and number of shipments. Computational findings using the software Matlab 7.0 are provided to find the optimal solution. The results of numerical examples show that centralized mode is better than that of decentralized mode, and to induce both vendor and buyer for coordination, proposed cost allocation model is effective. The authors also numerically investigate the effects of backorder parameter on the optimal solutions. Benefit of ordering cost reduction in both models is also provided.

We consider a single-stage multiproduct manufacturing facility producing several end-products for delivery to customers with a required customer lead-time. The end-products can be split in two classes: few products with high volume demands and a large number of products with low-volume demands. In order to reduce inventory costs, it seems efficient to produce the high-volume products according to an MTS policy and the low volume products according to an MTO policy. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and compare the impact of the scheduling policy on the overall inventory costs, under customer lead-time service level constraints. We consider two policies: the classical FIFO policy and a priority policy (PR) which gives priority to low volume products over high volume products. We show that for some range of parameters, the PR rule can significantly outperform the FIFO rule. In these ranges, the service level constraints are satisfied by the PR rule with much lower inventory costs.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare various inventory policies and their effect on various performance metrics at different levels of a multi stage supply chain. Later the model is integrated to include optimization of entire supply chain through implementation of collaborative supply chain model. Design/methodology/approach – Alternative inventory policies have been developed at different echelons and a comparison reflecting the usability on various factors such as inventory level, inventory cost and service level is presented so as to support the decision-making process. Various inventory policies such as economic order quantity, periodic ordering (T, M) and stock to demand have been considered. Along with the basic assumptions; lead time, demand variability, variability in demand during lead time, stock out costs have also been included to make the model more applicable to practical situations. Findings – After the selection of most appropriate inventory policy at each level through a decision matrix, the total cost of operating such a supply chain is calculated along with other parameters such as service level and inventory turns. The approach is of aggregating the optimized value at each echelon referred to as aggregated supply chain in the paper. Then the concept of integrated supply chain is introduced which optimizes the supply chain as a whole, rather than aggregating local optima. The comparison is made between the two approaches that prove the integrated supply chain's superiority. Furthermore, dependent optimization is run as it is not practically possible for each echelon to optimize at the same time. Originality/value – Each echelon is allowed to optimize at a time and other echelons assume corresponding values. This final comparative multi criterion analysis is based on the three factors, i.e. inventory cost, customer service level and inventory turnover with different weights assigned to each factor at different levels of a supply chain. Finally a consolidation of results is made to reflect the overall preference which proves that an integrated supply chain best serves all the parameters combined together.

PURPOSE: Current research seeks to create an economic model that connects strategic management and network theory. However, most theoretical models do not provide empirical evidence of network relationships’ real structure and attributes. The purpose of the paper is to explore the relation between enterprise characteristics and the characteristics of buyer–supplier relationships in supply chain networks. We are specifically interested in business relationships in networks with respect to the various enterprises’ sizes and sectors of industry. The subject of our research was characteristics, such as network relationship complexity, continuity of relationships, and strategic management in networks. The paper summarizes the results of an empirical study on buyer-supplier networks and accentuates the importance of developing and fostering business collaboration for strategic management. METHODOLOGY: We conducted the questionnaire research in 2016–2019 on 360 enterprises from the Czech Republic. We selected the research sample based on the non-probability purposive sampling method. The members of the research team collected data from an online survey and personal visits to enterprises. The statistical analysis of hypotheses is based on the frequency of managers’ answers. To evaluate results, a two-proportion Z-Test is used for comparing different categories of enterprises according to their enterprise size or prevailing sector of the industry. FINDINGS: The main results show that the differences between enterprises involved in the buyer–supplier structures lie mainly in their size. The survey did not identify differences between industry sectors. The findings show that the complexity of networks in the Czech Republic is not high in terms of the number of suppliers or involvement in many supply networks. The continuity of relationships with partners in buyer–supplier networks is relatively long-term oriented. Long-term partnerships reflect the higher quality of relationships and support future integration. However, large enterprises prefer to build contracts for shorter or longer periods. An overall decentralization strategy characterizes the strategic management of buyer–supplier networks. This finding means dividing competencies such as planning, managing, sourcing, decision-making, transporting (delivering) among more enterprises. IMPLICATIONS FOR THEORY AND PRACTICE: The paper provides an insight into understanding how the buyer–supplier network functions. The theory’s implication builds on the connection of supply chain management and strategic management from the network perspective. Supply chain management is viewed as a part of strategic management, and the synthesis of both research areas opens an innovative view to business theory. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: The paper’s principal value is the connection between contemporary ideas of strategic management and supply chain management. The synthesis of supply chain management and network approach enhances strategic management theory.

Purpose This study aims to provide a practical solution to the relationship between supply chain (SC) integration and market responsiveness (MR). A method is proposed to integrate SC and MR parameters, namely, product supply and demand in the context of low-value commodities (e.g. cement). Design/methodology/approach Simulation and forecasting approaches are adopted to develop a potential procedure for addressing demand during lead time. To establish inventory measurements (safety stock and reorder level) and increase MR and the satisfaction of customer’s needs, this study considers a downstream SC including manufacturers, depots and central distribution centers that satisfies an unbounded number of customers, which, in turn, transport the cement from the industrialist. Findings The demand during lead time is shown to follow a gamma distribution, a rare probability distribution that has not been considered in previous studies. Moreover, inventory measurements, such as the safety stock, depending on the safety factor under a certain service level (SL), which enables the SC to handle different responsiveness levels in accordance with customer requests. In addition, the quantities of the safety stock and reorder point represent an optimal value at each position to avoid over- or understocking. The role of SC characteristics in MR has largely been ignored in existing research. Originality/value This study applies SC flexibility analyzes to overcome the obstacles of analytical methods, especially when the production process involves probabilistic variables such as product availability and demand. The use of an efficient method for analyzing the forecasting results is an unprecedented idea that is proven efficacious in investigating non-dominated solutions. This approach provides near-optimal solutions to the trade-off between different levels of demand and the SC responsiveness (SLs) with minimal experimentation times.
