A predictive model for the synthesis of polylactide from lactic acid by response surface methodology

AbstractThe present work describes the statistical process optimization of a lowcost production process of PLA using organometallic (stannous octoate) compounds. The process optimization for both lactide and polylactide, was developed by factorial design and response surface methodology. The influence of different experimental parameters such as reaction temperature, time, concentration of catalyst and co-initiator concentration on the yield of lactide and polylactide has been evaluated. There are many studies reported on the synthesis of polylactide but no earlier study exists for the application of statistical analysis in determining the interactions among the process variables for lactide and polylactide production. Central composite experimental design with multiple linear regression has been used to estimate the coefficients of the polynomial model equation for the yield(s) of both lactide and polylactide. The statistical significance of polynomial model equation was validated by F test (ANOVA). Determination coefficient (R2) values found to be 0.913 and 0.958 for lactide and polylactide respectively, states that predicted values were in good agreement with the experimental values. Results of the statistical analysis showed that the model fits in all cases. Above synthesised polymer was characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, DSC and GPC to confirm the polymer structure and properties.

Response surface methodology was applied to optimization of the conditions for reflux extraction of Pandan (Pandanus amaryllifoliusRoxb.) in order to achieve a high content of total flavonoids (TF), total phenolics (TP), and high antioxidant capacity (AC) in the extracts. Central composite experimental design with three factors and three levels was employed to consider the effects of the operation parameters, including the methanol concentration (MC, 40%–80%), extraction temperature (ET, 40–70°C), and liquid-to-solid ratio (LS ratio, 20–40 mL/g) on the properties of the extracts. Response surface plots showed that increasing these operation parameters induced the responses significantly. The TF content and AC could be maximized when the extraction conditions (MC, ET, and LS ratio) were 78.8%, 69.5°C, and 32.4 mL/g, respectively, whereas the TP content was optimal when these variables were 75.1%, 70°C, and 31.8 mL/g, respectively. Under these optimum conditions, the experimental TF and TP content and AC were 1.78, 6.601 mg/g DW, and 87.38%, respectively. The optimized model was validated by a comparison of the predicted and experimental values. The experimental values were found to be in agreement with the predicted values, indicating the suitability of the model for optimizing the conditions for the reflux extraction of Pandan.

Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effects of binder, solvent, and pigment concentrations on the coverage response. The optimum coverage response of the auto base paint formulated was 1.5m2. Statistical analysis of the results showed that the data were adequately fitted by a second-order polynomial model Analysis of variance (ANOVA) also showed that the interactions between the independent parameters (binder, solvent, and pigment) have significant effects on the response (coverage). Diagnostics case statistics indicated that, the optimum experimental value of the cover age equal that of the predicted. This showed a good relationship between the actual and predicted response as evidenced in the R2 value of 0.9204 and a standard deviation of 0.1 obtained.

Nigella sativa, also known as black cumin, an annual herbaceous plant growing especially in Mediterranean countries, has recently gained considerable interest not only for its use as spice and condiment but also for its healthy properties of the fixed and essential oil and its potential as a biofuel. Nigella sativa seeds fixed oil, due to its high content in linoleic acid followed by oleic and palmitic acid, could be beneficial to human health. The objective of this study is to determine the optimum conditions for the solvent extraction of Nigella sativa seeds fixed oil using a three-level, three-factor Box-Behnken design (BBD) under response surface methodology (RSM). The obtained experimental data, fitted by a second-order polynomial equation were analysed by Pareto analysis of variance (ANOVA). From a total of 10 coefficients of the statistical model only 5 are important. The obtained experimental values agreed with the predicted ones.

Tool chatter is an unavoidable phenomenon encountered in machining processes. Acquired raw chatter signals are contaminated with various types of ambient noises. Signal processing is an efficient technique to explore chatter as it eliminates unwanted background noise present in the raw signal. In this study, experimentally recorded raw chatter signals have been denoised using wavelet transform in order to eliminate the unwanted noise inclusions. Moreover, effect of machining parameters such as depth of cut ( d), feed rate ( f) and spindle speed ( N) on chatter severity and metal removal rate has been ascertained experimentally. Furthermore, in order to quantify the chatter severity, a new parameter called chatter index has been evaluated considering aforesaid denoised signals. A set of 15 experimental runs have been performed using Box–Behnken design of experiment. These experimental observations have been used to develop mathematical models for chatter index and metal removal rate considering response surface methodology. In order to check the statistical significance of control parameters, analysis of variance has been performed. Furthermore, more experiments are conducted and these results are compared with the theoretical ones in order to validate the developed response surface methodology model.
