Abstract Bi(NO3)3·5H2O/MgSO4 was developed as an efficient and green reagent for the nitration of aromatic compounds under mechanochemistry (or ball milling) condition. While aromatics with weak activating groups such as phenyl could be nitrated by this reagent with 100% conversion, aromatics with weak deactivating groups such as chloro- or bromo- could also be nitrated but with moderate conversion and regioselectivity with big para/ortho ratios. The in situ generated N2O4 or NO2 due to the decomposition of Bi(NO3)3·5H2O promoted by MgSO4 should be responsible for this mechanochemical nitration.

A series of aromatic sulfonic acids is synthesized by subjecting arenes and NaHSO4·H2O to high-speed ball milling in the presence of P2O5. It is suggested the aromatic sulfonation occurs via in situ generated H2SO4 to give aromatic sulfonic acids. In some cases, formation of diaryl sulfones was observed.

AbstractBroadening of nitrogen-fused heteroaromatic chemical space such as indolizine and pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazine was achieved via FeCl­3-catalyzed nucleophilic addition of these N-fused aromatic compounds to a wide range of azolinium systems generated in situ, leading to novel N-fused heteroaromatic scaffolds with dearomatized N-heterocyclic substituents regioselectively. Nucleophilic addition of indolizines and pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazines mainly occurred at the C1 position of the isoquinoliniums and at the C4 site of the quinoliniums.

This paper reviews a method, “in situ consolidation ball milling” that provides artifactfree bulk nanocrystalline samples for several ductile metals such as Zn, Al and Al alloys, and Cu and Cu alloys. The preparation method is described in this paper and examples of the mechanical behavior of nanocrystalline materials made by this technique are given. It is found that in such artifact-free metals, combinations of both high strength and good ductility are possible.
