The Marambaia is an important natural refuge for preserving the genetic heritage of several rain forest plant species. In this insular region, where the vegetation types are Lower Montane Rain Forest and restingas (sandy coastal plain habitat), the impressive diversity of Melastomataceae consists of seven genera and 25 species of which 13 represent new records for the area. Miconia is best represented with 10 species, followed by Tibouchina (6 spp.), Leandra (4 spp.), Clidemia (2 spp.) and Huberia, Marcetia and Ossaea (1 sp. each). Most of the species are shrubs or trees and occur in Dense Submontane Ombrophilous Forest. Huberia ovalifolia DC., Leandra acutiflora (Naudin) Cogn. and Leandra melastomoides Raddi are cited in the list of endangered species for the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. An identification key is provided as well as descriptions, illustrations, comments on morphological peculiarities of species, and geographical and phenological data.

A list of identified oribatid ptyctimous mites from Lesser Antilles and Bahamas, including 18 species, six genera and three families, is provided. Of these, three species are new records for the Caribbean, and three species are new to science. Oribotritia grossa Niedbała sp. nov. differs from other neotropical Oribotritia by the presence of relatively short, thick, distally blunt sensilli. Arphthiracarus alienus Niedbała sp. nov. differs from other Arphthiracarus species by the presence of uniquely shaped sensilli, short spiniform setae, the median sigillar field long and narrow with an incision between the rostral setae, four pairs of notogastral lyrifissures and the location of vestigial setae f1 anterior to h1. Arphthiracarus strictus Niedbała sp. nov. differs from A. brasiliensis Niedbała, 1988, A. iubatus Niedbała, 2003, A. latebrosus (Niedbała, 1982) and A. pervalidus Niedbała, 2003 by the presence of a unique tight location of genital setae g4-6 and bifurcated setae d of femora I. In addition, descriptions of three tritonymphs are presented.

AbstractSixty-eight lichen species were found in the lower montane rain forest of Fortuna(1000-1200 m) in the province of Chiriquí, Panama; 33 of these were cyanobacterial lichens. The montane rain forest of the Volcan Bartú (2200-3100 m) yielded 30 species of lichens, 13 of which have cyanobacterial photobionts. Forty of the species reported are new records for Panama. Information concerning their habitats within the forest and their phytogeographical affinities is provided where possible.

The “caxeta” [Tabebuia cassinoides (Lam.) DC., Bignoniaceae] is exclusive of Brazil, where it occurs in flooded areas of the coastal plains, between the states of Pernambuco and Santa Catarina, forming large populations called “caxetais”. Bryophytes collections were made in 1988, 1993 and 1995, in the “caxetal” of Ubatuba, SP, Brazil. The material is deposited in the Herbaria SP and HRCB. This paper lists two divisions of bryophytes, with the total of 25 families, 61 genera, 109 species, one subspecies and four varieties. Lejeuneaceae totals the largest numbers of genera, species and of collected samples. The bryophytes were usually found on bark of living phorophytes and in a single kind of substrate. The bryoflora from “caxetal” is similar to that one reported for the Atlantic rain forest of the State of São Paulo. The liverworts Colura cylindrica and Leptolejeunea obfuscata are new records for the State of São Paulo

AbstractIn the Lesser Antilles the Ringed Kingfisher Megaceryle torquata stictipennis is found on Martinique, Dominica and Guadeloupe. On Martinique and Guadeloupe, farmers growing bananas have made massive use of chlordecone from 1973 until 1993. Chlordecone is a remnant organochlorine insecticide which bioaccumulates in organisms easily. We carried out a survey of the Ringed Kingfisher in 2009 on Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, traveling 270 km on 44 rivers to assess the effects of chlordecone on its habitat selection behaviour. We identified 12 territories and estimated the total population to be 54-64 individuals. A habitat selection analysis revealed that the Ringed Kingfishers were located mainly in sections of rivers flowing through the ombrophilous forest, but absent on the ocean shoreline or in the lower parts of rivers. The Ringed Kingfisher’s distribution on Guadeloupe could be negatively associated with areas heavily polluted by the chlordecone. We propose that the widespread use of chlordecone in banana plantations on Guadeloupe between 1973 and 1993 has adverse ecological consequences, and may be responsible for the absence of Ringed Kingfishers in lowland habitat on the island.

Abstract In the state of Ceará, bryophytes have been mainly sampled in humid and sub-humid enclaves, remnants of Atlantic rain forest, while studies in the Caatinga Domain are practically non-existent. The present work aimed to survey the floristic composition of bryophytes of the Apodi Plateau, a region predominantly covered by Caatinga. Collections were conducted as part of the field activities of the Program for Research in the Biodiversity of the Semiarid region of Brazil (PPBio). The briological material was collected in 2014, in the Apodi Plateau located within the territory of Ceará state. Fifty-nine bryophyte species were found: 27 liverworts - Marchantiophyta - distributed in seven families and 11 genera, and 32 mosses - Bryophyta - distributed in 14 families and 26 genera. Among the species found, 25 were new records for the state of Ceará and Riccia subplana is reported for the first time for the Northeast region of Brazil. Twenty-three are new records for the Caatinga Domain. Taxonomic comments are provided for the new records for the state of Ceará and for Caatinga, as well as an illustration of the species Weisiopsis bahiensis.
