AbstractThis article presents the results of a research on the effects and properties of the potassium iodide additive onto the structure of the MEH-PPV polymer material, in its aspect of application in the dye-sensitized solar cell. Changes in MEH-PPV surface morphology were researched through increasing of the potassium iodide content measured by scanning electron microscope. The increased content of potassium iodide also led to increased electrical conductivity measured by the Keithley meter. The electrical properties of the dye-sensitized solar cell were also studied, in which the liquid electrolyte was replaced with a thin layer of polyelectrolyte, based on MEH-PPV and potassium iodide.

In this paper, the possibility of replacing liquid electrolyte in a dye sensitized solar cells with a thin film of conductive polymer material was investigated. Liquid electrolyte in the construction of dye sensitized solar cells leaks and evaporates and leads to corrosion of the electrode, which lowers the conversion efficiency of solar radiation to electricity. The research focuses on the appropriate doping of the PVDF-HFP polymer by potassium iodide to improve its electrical conductivity and the development of thin film deposition technology for use in solar cells. Changes in PVDF-HFP surface morphology were researched through increasing of the potassium iodide content measured by scanning electron microscope. The increased content of potassium iodide also led to increased electrical conductivity measured by the Keithley meter. In order to test the suitability of developed materials for application in the construction of photovoltaic cells, a series of dye-sensitized solar cells ITO/TiO2/dye/active layer/Al were prepared. The active layer is made from pure PVDF-HFP and doped with potassium iodide. As a reference solar cell, a standard dye sensitized solar cell with a liquid electrolyte and a counter electrode was also made. Keywords PVDF-HFP; Polyelectrolyte; Dye-sensitized solar cells

The Taguchi method was adopted to determine the optimal gel electrolyte used in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Since electrolyte is a very important factor in fabrication of high performance and long-term stability DSSCs, to find the optimal composition of gel electrolyte is desired. In this paper, the common ingredients used in the liquid electrolyte were chosen. The ingredients then mixed with cheap ionic liquids and poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) were added to form colloidal electrolyte (gel). The optimal composition of each materials in the gel electrolyte determined by Taguchi method consists of 0.03 M I2, 0.15 M KI, 0.6 M LiI, 0.5 M 4-tertbutylpyridine (TBP), and 10% PVDF-HFP dissolved in the acetonitrile and 3-methoxypropionitrile (MPN) solution with volume ratio of 2 : 1. The short circuit current density of 14.11 mA/cm2, the conversion efficiency (η) of 5.52%, and the lifetime of over 110 days were observed for the dye-sensitized solar cell assembled with optimal gel electrolyte. The lifetime increases 10 times when compared with the conventional dye-sensitized solar cell assembled with liquid electrolyte.

In this work, several liquid electrolytes (LE) have been prepared. The electrolytes contain tetrapropylammonium iodide (TPAI) salt with different salt content, propylene carbonate (PC), ethylene carbonate (EC), polyethylene oxide (PEO), dimethylformamide (DMF) and (I-/I3-) redox couple LE was used in the Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC). DSSCs were fabricated and current density-voltage (J-V) characteristics measured. The highest incident photon conversion efficiency (IPCE) at 520 nm is 45.5% for DSSC with 0.25 g TPAI LE. At AM 1.5, DSSC with LE exhibits efficiency of 6.61% with Jsc= 18.69 mA cm-2, Voc= 0.68V and fill factor (FF) = 0.52.

Indoline dyeD-1was successfully applied as a cosensitizer for improving the spectral response of black dye in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). It was observed thatD-1effectively increases the short-circuit photocurrent by offsetting the competitive light absorption byI/I3-electrolyte in the wavelength region 350–500 nm when adsorbed on the TiO2nanocrystaline films in a mix dye system. The DSCs containing theD-1and black dye achieved a power conversion efficiency of 9.80% with higher short-circuit photocurrent of 19.54 mA/cm2compared to the system of black dye without cosensitization under standard AM 1.5 sunlight.
