Isolated Structures

Three natural flavonols compounds have been isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of Scurrula ferruginea Danser (Loranthaceae). Besides quercetin and quercitrin, an unusual flavonol glycoside 4″-O-acetylquercitrin was isolated. Structures were determined using spectroscopic methods including UV, NMR and HRMS-EI. The incidence of 4″-O-acetylquercitrin, not previously reported in the Loranthaceae, is discussed. Cytotoxic evaluation on four human cancer cell lines showed quercetin to be the most active with IC50 of 35 μм on U251 (human glioblastoma cells).

Strychnuxin (1), a new non-glucosidic iridoid, together with four known compounds, IX (2), loganetin (3), loganin (4) and sweroside (5), were isolated from the roots of Strychnos nux-blanda. The structures of all isolated compounds (1-5) were elucidated through their physical properties and by the use of spectroscopic methods, as well as comparisons with the previous literature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first isolation of compounds 1-5 from this plant. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicity against five human cancer cell lines.

Two new polyketides, antarones A and B, were isolated from the endophytic fungus Penicillium antarcticum. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods. Their general toxicity and cytotoxicity were evaluated, respectively, by brine shrimp lethality and cytotoxicity assay with human cancer cell lines. Neither antarones A nor B exhibited activity at the concentration of 100 μM.
