AbstractAluminum coating on 1Cr18Ni9Ti stainless steel was prepared by magnetron sputtering method. The specimens were treated with pre-oxidation (PO) or vacuum diffusion annealing (VA). Hot corrosion resistance of the coatings beneath the deposits of Na2SO4 at 1050 °C was investigated. Corrosion products were analyzed by XRD and SEM. Results show that the presence of coating could improve the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. FeAl phase appeared after VA at 600 °C, which enhanced cohesive force between the coating and the substrate, and reduced the oxidation and sulfidation rate. PO treatment can protect the substrate more effectively than VA treatment for metastable Al2O3 formed during PO treatment can be translated to stable Al2O3 more quickly at high temperatures. The corrosion products of the two kinds of specimens with aluminum coating were both composed of Al2O3, a little amount of FeS and Fe2O3 after 24 h corrosion. Al2O3 was formed mainly in the coatings, FeS was mainly distributed in the interface between coating and substrate of the specimens, and a small amount of FeS was distributed in the substrate. Al2O3 film remained intact after 24 h corrosion, and kept its protective effect on the substrate.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations demand for an expedient discovery of a Cr(VI)-free alternative corrosion protection for light alloys even though the green alternatives might never be as cheap as current harmful technologies. In the present work, flash- plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings (FPEO) with the process duration < 90 s are developed on AZ31B alloy in varied mixtures of silicate-, phosphate-, aluminate-, and fluoride-based alkaline electrolytes implementing current density and voltage limits. The overall evaluation of the coatings’ anticorrosion performance (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), neutral salt spray test (NSST), paintability) shows that from nine optimized FPEO recipes, two (based on phosphate, fluoride, and aluminate or silicate mixtures) are found to be an adequate substitute for commercially used Cr(VI)-based conversion coating (CCC). The FPEO coatings with the best corrosion resistance consume a very low amount of energy (~1 kW h m−2 µm−1). It is also found that the lower the energy consumption of the FPEO process, the better the corrosion resistance of the resultant coating. The superb corrosion protection and a solid environmentally friendly outlook of PEO-based corrosion protection technology may facilitate the economic justification for industrial end-users of the current-consuming process as a replacement of the electroless CCC process.

Nanocrystalline, single bcc solid solutions of W-Mo alloys have been successfully prepared by D. C. magnetron sputtering in a wide composition. The corrosion behavior of the sputter-deposited W-Mo alloys was studied. The W-Mo alloys showed significantly high corrosion resistance in 12 M HCl at 30o C. Their corrosion rates are about one and half orders of magnitude lower than that of sputter-deposited tungsten and lower than that of the sputter-deposited molybdenum even after prolonged immersion.DOI: 10.3126/jncs.v21i0.217Journal of Nepal Chemical Society Vol.21 2006 pp.19-25

CrNx film was widely used in mechanical engineering field because of its excellent anti-wear and corrosion resistance properties. While most of research was focused on mechanical properties, little attention had been paid to the corrosion resistance and residual stress of CrNx film . In this paper, CrNx films were deposited on silicon wafer (100) and iron substrate by unbalanced magnetron sputtering system (UBMS) at different N2 flow. Then the structure, thickness, residual stress, micro-hardness, wear-resistance and anti-corrosion properties of CrNx films were investigated. The results showed that the phase composition of CrNx films transformed from Cr, single phase Cr2N, Cr2N and CrN coexist to single CrN with the N2 flow rate increasing. The CrNx films composed with Cr2N phase, which deposited at 6 sccm N2 flow, had the highest microhardness and had higher compressive residual stress. Whereas the CrNx films with CrN and Cr2N phase coexist had the best wear and corrosion resistance.
