The article presents examples of the solution of the hydrodynamic problem that arises in the development of powerful electronic devices requiring liquid cooling using the CAD/CAE modeling method. The authors consider poorly documented or undocumented features of such solution based on the use of free software packages - SALOME, OpenFOAM and ParaView for the CAELinux operating system platform.

The overall size of software packages has grown considerably over recent years. Modular programming, object-oriented design and the use of static and dynamic libraries have all contributed towards the reusability and maintainability of these packages. One of the latest methodologies that aims to further improve software design is the use of component-based services. The Component Object Model (COM) is a specification that provides a standard for writing software components that are easily interoperable. The most common platform for component libraries is on Microsoft Windows, where COM objects are an integral part of the operating system and used extensively in most major applications. This chapter examines the use of COM in the design of search engines for knowledge discovery and data mining using modern heuristic techniques and how adopting this approach benefits the design of a commercial toolkit. The chapter describes how search engines have been implemented as COM objects and how representation and problem components have been created to solve rule induction problems in data mining.

Compared with the traditional electric-powered wheelchair, people are paying more attention on intelligent wheelchair. While the traditional intelligent wheelchair relays on separate designed control system, it is not good for general use. In that case, ROS provides an easy to use framework for rapid system development so that the researchers can develop various software packages to meet their needs, and we can also call each other packages without considering the compatibility problems. In this paper, we present a ROS (Robot Operating System) based intelligent wheelchair with the function of voice-control navigation. Compared with the traditional navigation, the voice-control navigation is more human. Obviously, ROS increases the versatility of system and reduces the cost. In order to prove the advancement and feasibility of this developed system, some experimental results are given in the paper.

AbstractThis chapter describes and compares suitable software for the analysis of basic and advanced discrete choice models. Software packages are classified into proprietary and non-proprietary, according to the operating system required and modelling capabilities. Abilities of both selected commercial (Stata, SAS and Latent Gold, e.g.) and open-source packages (Biogeme and R-libraries) are considered. Finally, some user-written estimation packages for Gauss, Matlab, R and Stata are presented.

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware, and key applications. Android is a software platform and operating system for mobile devices based on the Linux operating system and developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance. It allows developers to write managed code in a Java-like language that utilizes Google-developed Java libraries but does not support programs developed in native code. The unveiling of the Android platform on 5 November 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 34 hard-ware, software and telecom companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. When released in 2008, most of the Android platform will be made available under the Apache free-software and open-source license.

Using sinusoidal signal generators as an example, the necessity of using circuit simulation in the design of measuring devices is shown. The simulation results of the Bubba and Butler generators in the National Instruments Multisim, Labcenter Electronics Proteus, and Cadence PSpice 16.5 software packages are presented. The results of calculating the parameters of quartz resonators used to stabilize the frequency of oscillators are shown.

Linux is an operating system that it's presence offer many "new concepts" to the market. It’s an open source software developed under GNU project using General Public License (GPL), that gives everyone freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change, and improve the software. The GNU Project was launched in 1984 to develop a complete Unix-like operating system which is free software: the GNU system. GNU is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not Unix”; it is pronounced “guh-NEW", In Other way we can say that Linux developed, manufactured, and distributed by it's own costumers. They joined together in the Linux communities and create a network among them. It has a unique lateral pattern of relationship. The Author named all of this as the “Linux Phenomenon". This articles will begin by explaining theories about network, and then discuss the and then discuss the Linux phenomenon. Later, the author will explore the Linux's "breakthrough" in networking, and the implication of "how to do business".

In this chapter we present a package-based component architecture for the specific deployment and maintenance of public sector applications, specifically corporate Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The three-tier architecture defines a group of server-side packages, a kernel and external packages, that are dynamically requested and assembled at execution time according to the needs of individual users to produce on demand customized GIS applications. An intermediate middleware layer handles user authentication and version control. In order to demonstrate the proposed architecture, a practical prototype has been implemented using Java WebStart. This prototype demonstrates the creation of several GIS client applications, with increasing levels of functionality, and based on free software packages.
