The leading role that is attributable to economic indicators like consumer confidence has been well documented in the literature for many developed nations. Moreover, the relationship between high frequency financial market data has been a common research topic for world economies. However, there is hardly any study that attempts to search for the possible functional relationship between consumer confidence and financial market variables. This paper is a simple attempt to link these two brands of literature by focusing on the relationship between financial market variables and consumer confidence index before the global crisis has started. We have two distinctive points. First, we derive separate consumer confidence indices for men and women by employing micro‐level consumer confidence data from an emerging market (Turkish CNBC‐e consumer confidence index) for the period of January 2003 ‐ January 2008. Second, employing this data set, we do not only check for the existence of a relationship between consumer confidence and financial market variables (such as interest rates, exchange rates and stock exchange index) but also focus on the possibility of gender response. We find evidence of gender response difference as throughout the period women are more pessimistic than men‐due probably to lower levels of wealth‐and respond less to changes in exchange rates than men‐due probably to lower purchasing power. The study selected 410 companies on Viet Nam’s Stock Exchange during the period from 2012 to 2016, with 2050 observations as a sample of research, to analyze the relationship between cash holdings and investment levels. The findings show that cash holdings has a positive effect on investment levels: the higher cash holdings, the greater investment level. Also, the results show that investment levels are affected by the return on total assets but not affected by the size of the company. The research is empirical evidence that contributes to the limited investment in research in Vietnam and is a reference for those interested in investing in Vietnam and managers in strategic policy formulation.

Purpose Despite extensive research on the determinates of audit report timeliness, there is limited empirical evidence on the effect of auditor locality on audit report timeliness. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between auditor locality and audit report timeliness. Furthermore, this study investigates the moderating roles of audit committee, corporate governance and auditor quality in this relationship. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the information of 157 companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange during the period 2013–2019 has been collected. Moreover, multivariate linear regressions were used to test the hypotheses. Findings Findings show that in general, there is no significant relationship between auditor locality and audit report timeliness. However, empirical evidence suggests that in companies with specialized audit committees, strong corporate governance and high-quality auditors, auditor locality improves audit report timeliness. Originality/value Overall, the results indicate that there are some circumstances in which auditor locality affects the audit report timeliness. Specifically, the association of auditor locality and audit report timeliness is conditional to audit committee, corporate governance and auditor quality.

This paper took the selected data listed companies in Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2008-2015 as samples to study the relationship between the CFO’s working as the Board Secretary concurrently and corporate disclosure quality, and also to examine the impact of different government intervention levels and nature of property rights. The results indicate that the CFO’s doubling as the Board Secretary can distinctly improve the quality of corporate disclosure in listed companies; the CFO’s holding concurrently the post of the Board Secretary can improve noticeably the disclosure quality of listed companies in regions with a high degree of government intervention; the CFO’s also serving as the Board Secretary can improve the disclosure quality of non-state-owned listed companies. Moreover, this paper presents a reasonable explanation for the phenomenon that increasingly more CFOs are serving as the Board Secretaries simultaneously via empirical study. Lastly, conclusions of this study can provide empirical evidence for the appointment of the Board Secretary in listed companies.

This study aims to examine the effect of debt covenant slack on the value relevance of accounting information, and whether earnings management works as an intervening variable. A total of 40 non-financial companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2013 to 2017 were selected as sample. Three hypotheses were tested using partial least square and analyzed via path analysis. This study found that debt covenant slack positively affects the value relevance of accounting information. Possibly, the tendency of small debt covenant slacks in the firms causing the information of firms’ performance to be less relevant for the investor because they believe that the firms will prioritize the debt payments rather than dividends. Furthermore, empirical evidence from this study indicates that debt covenant slack affects investors’ decision in using firms’ performance information. However, no statistically significant effect was found neither on the relationship between debt covenant slack and earnings management nor on the relationship between earnings management and the value relevance of accounting information. Hence, earnings management is not an intervening variable in the effect of debt covenant slack on the value relevance of accounting information.

This study examines the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and firm value in the context of ownership structure. Specifically, our study explores whether large shareholder and foreign shareholder ownership play an important role in the CSR–firm value relationship. Using a sample of 48 firms listed on the Korea Stock Exchange (KSE) between 2010 and 2014, we find that CSR is positively associated with firm value. We further find that the relationship between CSR and firm value is weaker in firms with high large shareholder ownership than in firms with low large shareholder ownership. However, we find no evidence of the effect of foreign ownership on the relationship between CSR and firm value. This study sheds light on the importance of ownership structure in the relationship between CSR and firm value, suggesting significant implications for academics, practitioners, and policymakers. We contribute to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence on the effect of ownership structure on the CSR–firm value relationship. Policymakers may consider these results in implementing their policies that can enhance CSR activities.
