ABSTRACT This study aims to examine the role of innovation intensity in moderating the influence of board gender on company performance. This study uses quantitative data with data sources in secondary data, which will be processed using SPSS 22 software. This study's population are non-financial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange for the period 2014-2018 with 690 observations. This study found that board diversity has a positive effect on company performance. The higher the level of board diversity in this case the gender in a board, the higher the level of firm performance. The gender of the board of directors can help in making decisions because there are different perspectives on the discussion. Different perspectives will create a sense of caution which can help prevent risks. Besides, this study also found that the intensity of innovation could strengthen or moderate the effect of board diversity on firm performance. The company's intensity of innovation is higher when there are women on its board of directors. This is because various perspectives are important to be able to provide creative solutions, such as innovation. The intensity of innovation can increase when there is gender diversity on the board of directors to make firm performance increase.

The Board of Directors plays a key role as a internal mechanism of corporate governance. Indeed, its effectiveness is dependent on the presence of several factors, the most important are related to characteristics that relate primarily to the independence of its members, board size, the cumulative functions of decision and control, the degree of independence of the audit committee and the gender diversity of the board. To test the validity of our hypothesis, which states the existence of a certain deterministic between the board’s characteristics and financial performance measured by three different ratios, namely ROA, ROE and Tobin’s Q, we have developed three linear regression models. Our empirical validation was conducted on a sample of 26 companies listed on the Tunisian stock exchange Tunis (Tunis Stock Exchange) over a period that spans four years (2007-2010). The estimated models show satisfactory results showing the importance of the impact of board characteristics on financial performance of Tunisian companies.

This study aims at filling existing research by examining the effect of board composition specially board diversity on firm performance using cross-sectional data from London Stock Exchange (FTSE 350) of non-financial companies with a total observations 3961 companies for the years 2000–2016. To the best of our knowledge, the contribution of this paper is to examine the effect of board diversity (age, gender, education, and nationality) of FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 on firm performance. Our results indicate that age diversity has a negative effect on firm performance, which means that young board members enhance and increase firm performance. Furthermore, education diversity has a negative effect on firm performance. On the other hand, gender diversity has positive effect on firm performance, so if companies increase the number of females in the board of directors, firm performance will increase. Ultimately, our result reveals that nationality diversity has a positive effect on firm performance.

AbstractThis study aims to study the impacts of gender and nationality diversity on board structure to intellectual capital performance of manufacturing companies in Indonesia. The samples are 137 manufacturing company listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2014. Samples were studied using the linear cross-sectional regression model.  Based on the results of empirical tests, we concluded that gender diversity on board structure that are measured by percentage and dummy, do not have impact on intellectual capital performance of manufacturing companies in Indonesia. This shows that the synergy expected in gender diversity have not been able to increase intellectual capital performance. However, nationality diversity on board structure, that are also measured by percentage and dummy, shows positive impact on intellectual capital performance of manufacturing companies in Indonesia. This result shows that nationality diversity can be considered as the factors in appointing board of directors to increase intellectual capital performance.

Firm performance includes the activities produced by company management and high firm performance can be said to allow them to plan their work according to their own goals and take risks with full responsibility. This study was conducted to determine the effect of earnings management, the size of the board of directors, and ownership structure (blockholders ownership, institutional ownership, family ownership, and managerial ownership) on the firm's performance. By using sample data listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) from 2016 to 2019. Because there are several previous studies that produce different values ?? on firm performance. Therefore, it is necessary to re-examine this. In this study using the firm's performance with Tobin's Q model to determine the value of asset management generated by the company. The data used is panel data with secondary data collection techniques to test outliers by SPSS software version 25, then test descriptive statistics, multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity, R Square, F test, and also t-test using Eviews software version 10. The results of this study conclude that both accrual-based and real earnings management have a significant positive effect on firm performance, while the size of the board of directors has a significant negative effect on performance. The ownership structure has no significant effect on the firm's performance. The result of insignificant results could be caused by not supporting the agency theory perspective, as well as the lack of company control.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of independent directors on the performance of Italian listed firms on the Milan Stock Exchange during the period 2006-2015. After applying a Fixed Effect Model, the empirical findings suggest that the composition of the board may affect corporate performances and, more specifically, a significant relationship emerges between the presence of independent directors within the Board and company results. Specifically, independent directors and independent female directors positively affect firm performance. Diversely, independent busy directors, those with hold more than three directorship in other boards, do not affect performance.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the relationship between board of directors’ characteristics and performance in family businesses. It offers evidence to the question of whether a family firm (FF) differs from a non-family firm and looks at the possibility of asymmetrical effects between periods of stability and economic adversity. Design/methodology/approach A panel data approach was applied to a sample of Portuguese firms listed the on Euronext Lisbon exchange between 2002 and 2013. Findings The results show that FFs are likely to have a lower proportion of independent members and higher gender diversity on their boards than non-family firms. FF performance is positively related to ownership concentration and gender diversity. There are performance premiums for family businesses, which have more gender diversity than their counterparts. These effects also depend on whether the economy is in recession. The evidence suggests that the presence of women on the board and the leverage and size of the FFs have a more significant impact on the performance in periods of economic adversity. Research limitations/implications One limitation of this study is the small size of the sample as it was drawn from the Euronext Lisbon exchange, a small stock exchange market. Originality/value This study provides input into the academic discussion on corporate governance and FF, an area which is in need of research. In addition, the authors examine this issue in conjunction with generalised economic adversity, focusing on the possible asymmetrical effects that the nature of the board of directors may have on performance in periods of stability and those of economic adversity. The role of board of directors is crucial to the understanding of corporate behaviour and the setting of the policy that regulates corporate activities.
