According to Justis and Judd (1998), franchising is defined as “a business opportunity by which the owner (producer or distributor) of a service or a trademarked product grants exclusive rights to an individual for the local distribution and/or sale of the service or product, and in return receives a payment or royalty and conformance to quality standards. The individual or business granting the business rights is called the franchisor, and the individual or business granted the right to operate in accordance with the chosen method to produce or sell the product or service is called the franchisee.” Although the business of the franchisor is usually larger than the “satellite small businesses” of the franchisees, most franchisors manage mostly small and medium-size enterprises (Stanworth, Price, and Purdy, 2001). The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recognizes this fact and sponsors various seminars in franchising, for example, business plan and raising capital, through regional Small Business Development Centers (Thomas and Seid, 2000). In addition, SBA sets up programs specifically designed for franchises (for example, Franchise Registry Web site: www.franchiseregistry.com) to streamline the review process for SBA loan applications (Sherman, 1999) and provide special incentives for franchisees to open locations in economically depressed areas (Thomas and Seid, 2000).

Cash management is simply defined as making the right amount of money available at the right time and the right place to meet the government's obligations in the most cost-effective way. The main features of modern cash management are centralized government bank accounts and establishment of a Treasury Single Account, ability to make accurate cash flow forecasts, use of short-term financing instruments, and capacity for the investment of excess cash reserves. Establishing a sound cash management framework with the mentioned features is beneficial not only to the governments and public entities, but also to other stakeholders including the beneficiaries of government payments, banks and lenders. Given the recent COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and locked-down measures introduced in many countries, governments had to deal with unanticipated revenue decreases, and significantly increased public expenditures due to fiscal stimulus packages and pandemic related health expenditures. Therefore, existence of a well-structured government cash management is now even more important than before. This paper aims to explore cash flow forecasting and cash management practices in 24 countries in various regions, at different income levels and technical capacity, and alignment to good practices based on the information provided at the World Bank workshops on Cash Flow Forecasting and Cash Management held in 2018 and 2019. The paper also draws on experiences and practices from other emerging and advanced countries. Cases from different countries indicate that full implementation of modern cash management is still a challenge, even though the Treasury Single Account system is common in most countries and liquidity buffers were established or increased following the Global Financial Crisis. Cash flow forecasting is an area to improve given the accuracy, horizon and frequency of the projections are frequently limited. Fragmented institutional structure makes cash management even more challenging. Country cases also demonstrate that there is a significant room to strengthen coordination between debt and cash management and the use of short-term instruments to cover cash shortages. Investment of cash balances seems to be a bigger weakness as many countries keep their liquidity buffers in the Central Bank with no remuneration.

Payday loans are small-amount, short-term, unsecured, high-cost credit contracts provided by non-mainstream credit providers. Payday loans are usually taken out to help the consumer pay for essential items, such as food, rent, electricity, petrol, broken-down appliances or car registration or repairs. These consumers take out payday loans because they cannot — or believe that they cannot — obtain a loan from a mainstream credit provider such as a bank. In recent years there has been a protracted debate in Australia — and in several overseas jurisdictions — about how to regulate the industry. Recent amendments to the National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009 (Cth) — referred to in this article as the 2013 reforms — are designed to better protect payday loan consumers. While the 2013 reforms provide substantially improved protection for payday loan consumers, further changes to the law may be warranted. This article raises several law reform issues which should be considered as part of the 2015 review into small amount credit contracts, including whether the caps on the cost of credit are set at the right level, whether the required content and presentation of the consumer warnings needs to be altered, whether more needs to be done to protect consumers who are particularly disadvantaged or vulnerable and whether a general anti-avoidance provision should be included in the credit legislation.

Abstract Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia treated in clinical practice. Structural remodeling is characterized by atrial enlargement and contributes to the therapeutic resistance in patients with long-standing AF. Purpose To study the atrial arrhythmogenic and echocardiographic consequences induced by volume overload in the complete chronic atrioventricular block (CAVB) dog. Methods Echocardiographic and electrophysiological data was obtained in 14 anaesthetized Mongrel dogs, in acute AV-block (AAVB), after 6 weeks of CAVB (CAVB6) and CAVB10. Left atrial (LA) volume was determined with 2D echocardiography by using the biplane method. An electrocardiogram and monophasic action potentials (MAP) at the right atrial (RA) free wall were recorded. Atrial effective refractory period (AERP) was determined by continuous programmed electrical stimulation (PES) of 20 beats with a cycle length of 400 ms and an extrastimulus with decremental design until refractoriness was reached. A continuous PES protocol of 20 beats with an extrastimulus 5 ms longer than the AERP was applied for 150 seconds to trigger AF. After 5 min without arrhythmias, autonomic neuromodulation was performed by intravenous infusion (IV) of acetylcholine (1,5μg/kg/min to 6,0μg/kg/min) for 20 min followed by prompt IV infusion of isoprenaline (3μg/min) until the atrial heart rate increased by 20 bpm. PES with an extrastimulus was repeated for 150 seconds to induce AF. Results LA volume increased from 13.7±3.2 ml at AAVB to 20.5±5.9 ml* at CAVB6, and 22.7±6.0 ml* at CAVB10 (Fig. 1A). AERP was similar at AAVB, CAVB6, and CAVB10 (115.8±11.9, 117.3±11.7, and 106.8±12.1 ms respectively). Repetitive AF paroxysms of >10 seconds were induced in 1/14 (7%) dogs at AAVB, 1/11 (9%) at CAVB6, and 5/10 (50%)* at CAVB10 (*p<0.05) upon PES (Fig. 1B). Combined neuromodulation and PES did not increase the AF inducibility rate, but prolonged the longest episode of AF in the inducible dogs from 55±49 seconds to 236±202 seconds* at CAVB10 (Fig. 1C). LA volume was higher in inducible dogs 25.0±4.9 ml compared to 18.4±4.2 ml in non-inducible dogs at CAVB10. Conclusion Sustained atrial dilation forms a substrate for repetitive paroxysms of AF. Neuro-modulation prolongs AF episode duration in susceptible dogs. This animal model can be used to study structural remodeling of the atria and possible therapeutic advances in the management of AF. Guidance regarding the decision to remove an adolescent from athletic competition immediately following an acute concussive injury and the safe return of play in the short term is widely accepted and supported by clinical evidence, local institutional policies, and state and federal laws. There is considerably less guidance regarding the decision to permanently retire an adolescent athlete for medical reasons due to concussive injuries. In this article, we discuss the clinical and non-clinical considerations that should guide clinicians in discussions regarding the adolescent athlete’s permanent retirement by emphasizing the ethical obligation to protect the child’s right to an open future as possibly determinative in otherwise ambiguous cases.

Abstract Background The QRS axis represents the sum of the amplitudes and orientation of the ventricular depolarization. In newborns, the QRS axis is generally directed downward and to the right and left axis deviation (LAD) may be associated with heart disease. Accurate interpretation of abnormalities in the QRS axis may facilitate early diagnosis of heart diseases in newborns. Purpose To describe the evolution of the QRS axis during the first four weeks of life and provide updated, digitalized, normal values from healthy newborns. Methods Electrocardiograms from 12,317 newborns (age 0–28 days) included in a regional, prospective, general population study from 2016–2018 were analyzed. Electrocardiograms were obtained and analyzed with a computerized algorithm with manual validation. The algorithm calculated the QRS mean axis using the net amplitudes of three leads I, II, and III. The four main QRS axis classifications were: “adult normal” axis (+1° to +90°), left axis deviation (LAD, 0° to −90°), right axis deviation (RAD, +91° to +180°), and extreme axis deviation (EAD, +181° to +270°). Echocardiograms were performed according to standard guidelines. Only newborns with an echocardiography excluding structural heart disease were included. Results Electrocardiograms from 12,317 newborns with a median age at examination of 12 days (52% boys) were included. The median QRS axis was 119° at the ages 0–7 days and shifted leftwards to 102° at the ages 22–28 days (p<0.001). We found that girls had significant less pronounced right axis deviation than boys (111° vs 117°, p<0.001) and that increasing gestational age was associated with more pronounced right axis deviation (104° vs 116°, p<0.05). Infant size did not affect the axis (p>0.05). Only 0.5% had LAD (0° to −90°) and 1.1% had an axis within the interval +240° to +30° indicating that a QRS axis in this expanded interval is unusual in healthy newborns. Conclusion The QRS axis showed a gradual leftward-shift during the first four weeks of life and was affected by sex and gestation age but unaffected by infant size. LAD occurred in only 0.5% of the newborns. Our data serve as updated reference values, which may facilitate clinical handling of newborns. Funding Acknowledgement Type of funding source: Foundation. Abstract Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term effect of active skeletonized sutural distractor (ASSD) appliance on temporomandibular joint morphology of class III malocclusion subjects. Materials and Methods This was a prospective interventional study. Cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) images of 22 patients were taken before and after treatment by using Planmeca Promax 3D CBCT machine version 2.9.2 (Planmeca OY Helsinki, Finland). The condylar width, height, length, roof of glenoid fossa thickness, and all joint spaces were measured. The condylar position was determined based on Pullinger and Hollander formula. The condylar shape was determined as per Kinzinger et al. The condylar volume was calculated by using Mimics software (Materialize, Belgium). Statistical Analysis Data analysis was performed by using SPSS software version 24. Wilcoxon paired signed-rank test was used to compare the difference in temporomandibular joint morphology and condylar volume between pre- and post-treatment measurements. Chi-square test was used to compare the condylar position and shape. Results The superior (p = 0.000 on the right side, p = 0.005 on the left side) and posterior joint spaces (p = 0.000 on both sides) were decreased after the treatment, respectively. The condyles were rotated upward and backward, thereby increasing the anterior joint spaces (p = 0.000 on both sides) after the treatment. The condylar volume increases after treatment, but no significant differences were observed (p = 0.903 on the right side, p = 0.062 on the left side). Conclusion The significant changes were observed in joint spaces. The condyles were more anteriorly placed before treatment. Condylar position and shape alter in response to ASSD treatment. The condylar volume did not show any significant change.

Companies usually like to claim that they are market-oriented; however, many studies reveal that businesses typically rely on short-term financial indicators, only a small percentage of firms consider time spent on consumers as important, and marketing is considered as a cost rather than an investment. Companies, however, need to understand their own and their environment's operations in order to set the right objectives, manage their tangible and intangible resources, and achieve the best possible performance. This paper focuses on performance measurement and its relation to market orientation, marketing activity, objectives and marketing resources. This research reveals that though marketing's role in the organisation seems to be significant managers' commitment to marketing often remains at an attitudinal level, and they tend to overestimate their marketing efforts. Furthermore, customer-based measures seem to be good indicators of market-orientation, still managers consider financial and market performance measures to be more important. This paper supports the finding that market orientation and business success are strongly related to one another.
