Myositis ossificans is a benign lesion characterized by focal heterotopic soft tissue ossification and occurring in young people generally after localized trauma. It can mimic osteosarcoma but it rarely degenerates. We report a case of a patient with myositis ossificans which degenerates into extra-skeletal osteosarcoma

Myositis ossificans (MO) is a benign bone formation in an extra-skeletal location. The most common subtype of MO, the post-traumatic, usually develops in young males after a traumatic event or sports injury. MO may simulate malignant bone lesions such as extra-skeletal or surface osteosarcomas, or soft tissue sarcomas such as synovial sarcoma or undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. In the early phase the diagnosis of MO is challenging because imaging and histopathological findings may be non-characteristic. Detailed medical history as well as clinical examination, follow-up imaging studies and histological assessment are crucial for a proper diagnosis. Early and accurate differential diagnosis between MO and malignant soft tissue and bone tumours is important to maximize. Cite this article: EFORT Open Rev 2021;6:572-583. Osseous choristoma is an uncommon benign lesion characterized by the presence of ectopic mature bone within soft tissue. In most cases, these lesions occur on the dorsum of the tongue in patients in their third and fourth decades of life. This article describes a case of lingual osseous choristoma in a pediatric patient. An eleven-year-old girl with a lingual mass was referred to our hospital from a dental clinic. Total excisional biopsy and histological examination were performed, and osseous choristoma was diagnosed. The postoperative course was uneventful with no signs of recurrence during the 12 months after surgery. Moreover, a literature review focusing on pediatric cases with lingual osseous choristoma was performed to know the etiology, clinicopathological characteristics, and course of treatment of the lesion.

Myositis ossificans (MO) is a rare disease in which ossification develops in the muscle or soft tissue. MO traumatica is recognized by ossification of the soft tissues after acute or repetitive trauma, burns, or surgical procedures. In the head and neck region, masseter is most commonly involved muscle.

Introduction: Soft tissue tumors are benign or malignant lesions developing from connective tissue and its varieties. Case Report: A 35-year-old patient referred to us for management of a voluminous pelvic-perineal mass. The clinical and para clinical data were in favor of a malignant lesion. The treatment consisted of a wide excision of the tumor. The post-operative period was complicated by an anal incontinence needing a protective left iliac colostomy. A perinioraphy, sphincter refection, and re–establishment of the digestive continuity were performed later on. The cytological examination of the excised mass revealed a conclusive involute hyanilised leiomyoma. Conclusion: This contrast between the clinical, para clinical and histologic data in our patient confirm the diagnostic challenges of soft tissue tumors, hence the need for special technic to assure diagnostic certitude to avoid mutilating surgical approaches for a benign lesion.

A patient presented with an ossifying thigh mass suggestive of myositis ossificans. He had no antecedent trauma to the area. The mass was found to be an ossifying soft tissue metastasis from an occult gastric adenocarcinoma primary. Malignancy, and especially metastatic malignancy, is rarely considered in the differential diagnosis of a radiographic presentation of myositis ossificans.

Extra skeletal osteochondroma is a rare soft tissue tumor. We report a case of extra skeletal osteochondroma in the tendon sheath of tibialis anterior tendon near the left ankle joint in a 7 year old child. The diagnosis of soft tissue osteochondroma should be considered when a well defined bony mass is located in the soft tissue. It must be differentiated from other causes of soft tissue calcification as myositis ossificans, synovial (osteo) chondromatosis, tumor calcinosis; synovial sarcoma, extra skeletal osteosarcoma & other causes of heterotopic ossification.

Soft tissue ultrasound (ST-USS) has been shown to be of utmost importance in assessing patients with soft tissue infections in the emergency department or critical care unit. It aids in guiding the management of soft tissue infection based on the sonographic findings.
