Lignite is a domestic strategic reserve of low rank coals in many countries for its abundant resource and competitive price. Combustion for power generation is still an important approach to its utilization. However, the high moisture content always results in low efficiencies of lignite-direct-fired power plants. Lignite pre-drying is thus proposed as an effective method to improve the energy efficiency. The present work focuses on the flue gas pre-dried lignite-fired power system (FPLPS), which is integrated with fan mill pulverizing system and waste heat recovery. The thermo-economic analysis model was developed to predict its energy saving potential at design conditions. The pre-drying upgrade factor was defined to express the coupling of pre-drying system with boiler system and the efficiency improvement effect. The energy saving potential of the FPLPS, when applied in a 600 MW supercritical power unit, was determined to be 1.48 %-pts. It was concluded that the improvement of boiler efficiency mainly resulted from the lowered boiler exhaust temperature after firing pre-dried low moisture content lignite and the lowered dryer exhaust gas temperature after pre-heating the boiler air supply. Keywords: lignite; pre-drying; thermodynamic analysis; thermo-economics

In China, coal combustion to generate electric power is the primary method, the energy-saving and emission reduction is the urgent task. At present, the energy-saving dispatching trial method in some area evaluates energy-saving and emission reduction of coal combustion power generation according to power supply coal consumption rate only. But the power supply coal consumption rate can’t reflect the energy-saving and emission reduction effect of coal combustion power plant overall. For example, the same coal combustion unit, the coal consumption rate is difference when desulfuration system is operating or not; the coal consumption rate of the unit with SCR will be increased; the coal consumption rate of the air-cooled unit is higher than water-cooled unit; etc.. This paper considers synthetically coal consumption rate, pollution emission, water resource wastage, etc., establishes a integrated evaluation system, adopts factor analysis method, gets the integrated evaluation system and index of energy-saving and emission reduction of coal combustion power generation, evaluates energy-saving and emission reduction effect of 5 power plants reasonable. The results show that the index can reflect the energy-saving and emission reduction level of coal combustion power generation.

China’s electricity market is in the environment for a round of new electric power reform, energy planning and transformation and the carbon market construction. The current market players are in urgent need of implementing their own energy saving and emission reduction actions. Relatively extensive and systematic researches on the assessment of the energy saving and emission reduction effects for the power plants, power grid companies, and technical equipment have been carried out at home and abroad. However, there are still vacancies in the researches on those for electricity retailers emerged on the sales side. Based on the carding and analysis of related policies and guidance, in this paper, relevant indicators are considered to build the evaluation indicator system of the energy saving and emission reduction effects for electricity retailers. The combination weights are gained by means of analytic hierarchy process and entropy weight method. Then, after the combined empowerment of indicators, the multi-level fuzzy comprehensive evaluation of energy saving and emission reduction effects for electricity retailers is conducted. Finally, choosing 10 electricity retailers (numbered from A to J) as evaluation objects, this model is used for obtaining the evaluation results and ranking of energy saving and emission reduction effects of electricity retailers, which provides reasonable ideas for the construction of evaluation indicator system and effective comprehensive evaluation methods of energy saving and emission reduction effects for market players in the electricity sales side. The results of example analysis show that, from a single dimension, the best electricity retailers in market transactions, technical means, integrated energy services, management system, and social responsibilities are followed by B, J, D, G, C, or I. However, from a global perspective, the sorted evaluation results are D, J, I, A, H, G, E, B, F, and C, which reflects the overall energy saving and emission reduction effects of electricity retailers through the two-level fuzzy comprehensive evaluation.

Abstract The automation of the control to a power plant is indeed a challenge mainly because of the occurrences of random and unpredictable variations in output demands as well as because of highly non-linear behavior of the system itself [1]. It is sometimes argued that the ‘best’ control for a power plant is the operators themselves. Experienced operators are capable of taking decisions on the basis of incomplete and imprecise information. The extent to which these decisions are correct is a matter of speculation. Erroneous conclusions, established post facto, are chalked up to the learning process and in fact, contribute to the forming of a good, experienced control team. The need to automate the control process for a plant is even more acutely felt when considering the complexity of the plants themselves and the volume of data that would have to be processed before a control decision can be taken. Factored into this decision would also be several governing parameters such as costs, reliability, other constraints and their interdependancy, as well as planned and unscheduled outages for maintenance and so on. In this paper, however, only one facet of a power plant operation is considered. It is intended to demonstrate that thermal efficiency may be improved by better techniques for automated control of throttle valves in the steam turbine of the plant. One of these options, fuzzy logic, is selected, and defended, as being the more effective than current techniques. A comparative analysis is conducted of control techniques for plant operations followed by a brief overview of fuzzy control and its application to control of non-linear systems. A method of applying this ‘new’ computer-based technique to control of non-linear, somewhat erratic plants is presented and discussed.

In 1996, Cogeneration-Kraftwerke Management Steiermark (CMST), OMV Cogeneration, together with local partners, built a 25Mwel gas turbine plant with a hot water boiler for thermal energy to be used by a car manufacturer and the municipality Graz, Austria. The plant is driven by a FT8-30 (JT8D-219) Pratt & Whitney (P&W) jet engine, accumulating 8200 operating hours per annum. This paper outlines the technical experience and related problems with the existing equipment in the light of variable operating conditions and the investments for efficiency augmentation of the gas turbine trains. A joint-venture between Cogeneration Kraftwerke Management Obero¨sterreich GmbH (CMOO¨) and OMV Cogeneration GmbH as well as Energie AG. CMOO¨ has operated the Combined Heat Power CHP Plant (50 MW el) in the paper mill SCA GRAPHIC LAAKIRCHEN based on contracting since 1994. Because of a extension of the paper mill the energy supply had to be increased. So the delivery of two steam boilers with each 30 t steam per hour and water treatment took place in August 2001. The plant-extension will operate as an independent unit and will guarantee the full availability of the energy supply. Commercial operation will start in January 2002.

Abstract Degradation of pressure equipment is becoming an important issue due to increasing asset service time in process and power plants across Europe. For this reason it is important to assess life consumption of these assets to avoid catastrophic failures. Therefore it is necessary to refer to national/international normative on this subject. At present time the Italian thermotechnical committee (CTI) has drawn up a comprehensive set of norms which help the user to set up an inspection plan to investigate and assess degradation of pressure vessels and boilers. In the first part of this paper creep damage of Steam Generators is analyzed. For this purpose results of INAIL (Istituto Nazionale per l’ Assicurazione contro gli Infortuni sul Lavoro) database of steam boilers with 100’000 service hours or more is illustrated. Critical components are identified with reference to materials, geometry and operating parameters (pressure, temperature and time). At the end of the design life cycle, components of pressure equipment operated in creep regime must subjected to specific checks to estimate their residual life and the suitability for further use in safety conditions. The procedure allows to define reinspection intervals keeping acceptable the risk associated with the further use of the component related to creep even in evidence of defects in progress. The first check must be performed after 100,000 hours of effective use. Then, residual life evaluations must be repeated according to period of time that are defined as function of the results of all the checks carried out. In the second part of this paper boiler degradation is discussed with reference to NDT results and in-field inspection campaigns which are carried out traditionally after 45 years of service time, to minimize the risk of pressure components failures. In this paper results of different case studies are discussed with reference to degradation mechanisms and applicable standards.

Tube bundles in steam boilers of nuclear power plants and nuclear on-board stokehold are known to be exposed to high levels of vibrations under flowing fluid. This coupled fluid-structure problem is still a challenge for engineers, first because of the difficulty to fully understand it, second because of the complexity for setting it up numerically. Although numerical techniques could help the understanding of such a mechanism, a complete simulation of a fluid past a whole elastically mounted tube bundle is currently out of reach for engineering purposes. To get round this problem, the use of a reduced-order model has been proposed with the introduction of the widely used Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) method for a flow past a fixed structure [M. Pomare`de, E. Liberge, A. Hamdouni, E.Longatte, & J.F. Sigrist - Simulation of a fluid flow using a reduced-order modelling by POD approach applied to academic cases; PVP2010, July 18–22, Seattle]. Interesting results have been obtained for the reconstruction of the flow. Here a first step is to propose to consider the case of a flow past a fixed tube bundle configuration in order to check the good reconstruction of the flow. Then, an original approach proposed by Liberge (E. Liberge; POD-Galerking Reduction Models for Fluid-Structure Interaction Problems, PhD Thesis, Universite´ de La Rochelle, 2008) is applied to take into account the fluid-structure interaction characteristic; the so-called “multiphase” approach. This technique allows applying the POD method to a configuration of a flow past an elastically mounted structure. First results on a single circular cylinder and on a tube bundle configuration are encouraging and let us hope that parametric studies or prediction calculations could be set up with such an approach in a future work.
