Postgraduate Education in Pediatrics in Louisiana: Louisiana State University School of Medicine and the Louisiana State Department of Health jointly have inaugurated a program of graduate instruction in pediatrics for the practicing physicians of the state. Dr. Sidney S. Chipman has joined the faculty of the School of Medicine as Director of the program. He has been appointed Associate Professor of Pediatrics and, at the same time, Associate in Pediatrics in the State Department of Health.

Infantile Paralysis

The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis has awarded postgraduate fellowships in the fields of scientific research, physical medicine and public health. Three of the new fellows will devote their time to research projects in the field of pediatrics. Dr. John J. Osborn, of Larchmont, N.Y., has already begun his project at New York University—Bellevue Medical Center under Drs. L. Emmett Holt, Jr., Professor of Pediatrics, and Colin MacLeod, Professor of Microbiology; Dr. Paul Harold Hardy, Jr., of Baltimore, Md., and Dr. David I. Schrum, of Houston, Texas, will start their work July 1, respectively, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, under Drs. Francis F. Schwentker, Pediatrician-in-Chief, and Horace L. Hodes, Associate Professor of Pediatrics; and at Louisiana State University School of Medicine under Drs. Myron E. Wegman, Professor of Pediatrics, and G. John Buddingh, Professor of Microbiology.

The decision of the State Department to employ three outstanding rural sociologists to make sociological and anthropological studies in three leading Latin American countries, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico was based in no small measure upon the reputation of the rural sociologists in the applied field. A year ago last February Professor T. Lynn Smith, Head of the Department of Sociology at Louisiana State University, was sent to Brazil; in May, Dr. Carl C. Taylor, Head of the Division of Farm Population and Rural Welfare in the United States Department of Agriculture, left for Argentina; and in June, Professor Nathan Whetten, Dean of the Graduate School at Connecticut University left for Mexico. The State Department, which is furnishing these rural sociologists funds to conduct the investigations in the respective countries, and the Office of Foreign Agricultural Relations in the USDA, which cooperates in the direction of the studies, have permitted each of these men wide latitude within which to work.

THE recipient of the Clifford G. Grulee Award of the American Academy of Pediatrics for 1965 is Clarence H. Webb of Shreveport, Louisiana. Born in Shreveport in 1902, Dr. Webb was graduated from Tulane University in 1923 and received his M.D. degree from the same university in 1925. Later—in 1931—he received the M.S. degree in pediatrics from the University of Chicago, where he completed a residency at the Bobs Roberts Hospital. Previously he had a year of residency at the University of Minnesota Hospital. Dr. Webb has been in the private practice of pediatrics in Shreveport since 1931. He has also been visiting lecturer at the Tulane School of Medicine since 1947 and professor of pediatrics in the Postgraduate School of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine since 1956. In addition, he finds time to lecture at the Northwestern College of Nursing in Natchitoches. He holds staff appointments at four private hospitals in the Shreveport area and is chief of pediatrics at Confederate Memorial Hospital. Dr. Webb is a member of a number of medical organizations and has served as president of the Louisiana and Shreveport Pediatric Societies, as well as president of the Shreveport Medical Society. He has been active in many local, state, and national organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America, the Louisiana Public Health Association, from which he received its annual award in 1957; the American Anthropological Association, and the Society for American Archeology. Dr. Webb served as president of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1962-1963, previously serving as a member of the Executive Board and as chairman of District VIII. These services were outstanding and important.
