A ganglioneuroblastoma developed in a 35-month-old boy with both the fetal hydantoin and fetal alcohol syndromes. Our case, plus two recent reports in the literature, would very likely establish the relationship between fetal hydantoin syndrome and the development of neural crest tumors. Infants exposed in utero to hydantoins should be closely observed for the development of these tumors.

In 1977 Hornstein et al1 reported the occurrence of adrenal carcinoma in a child with fetal alcohol syndrome. Recently Seeler et al2 noted a ganglioneuroblastoma in a child with fetal hydantoin-alcohol syndromes. The association of neural crest tumors with fetal hydantoin syndrome now appears established.2 The following case suggests an association with neoplasia may also exist for fetal alcohol syndrome. CASE REPORT Clinical Summary T.E. was the 1,360 gm product of a 35-week gestation born to a 30-year old, black primigravida. At 11 days of age the patient was transferred to Duke Hospital for evaluation of multiple congenital anomalies and repair of a right-sided diaphragmatic hernia.

The viscosity of amniotic fluid was measured in 52 ewes and the results correlated with the postnatal course of the lambs delivered by cesarean section. Viscosity was not related to length of gestation or to the immediate prepartum condition of the ewe, but a definite relationship was found between amniotic fluid viscosity (AFV) and the postnatal course of the fetus. Of 22 lambs considered viable, 9 failed to survive. In 10 of the 13 survivors, AFV was less than 1.6; whereas in the nonsurvivors, AFV varied between 1.6 and 4.4. All of the nonsurvivors experienced respiratory difficulty associated with copious amounts of extremely viscous secretions in the mouth and oropharynx. The substance responsible for the high AFV was a mucoprotein and was detectable in all samples with a viscosity of 1.24 or more but in none with a viscosity below 1.24. The data suggest the possibility that fetal distress may induce qualitative or quantitative alterations of fetal mucous secretions in utero which subsequently could impede lung expansion at birth.

The earliest stage of neural crest cell (NCC) migration is characterized by an epitheliomesenchymal transformation, as the cells leave the neural tube. There is evidence that in a number of cell systems this transformation is accompanied by alteration or depletion of associated basement membranes. This study examines the ultrastructural relationship between mouse NCCs and adjacent basement membranes during the earliest stages of migration from the neural tube. Basement membranes were identified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and immunofluorescence using antibodies to type-IV collagen. The ultrastructural features of NCCs and their relationship with surrounding tissues were also examined using TEM. In the dorsal region of the neural tube, from which NCCs originate, the basement membrane was depleted or absent, and with the immunofluorescence technique it was shown that this pattern was reflected in a deficit of type-IV collagen. TEM observations indicated that ultrastructurally NCCs differ from their neuroepithelial neighbours only in overall cell shape and their relationship to other cells and the extracellular matrix.

Variance in spatial abilities are thought to be determined by in utero levels of testosterone and oestrogen, measurable in adults by the length ratio of the 2nd and 4th digit (2D:4D). We confirmed the relationship between 2D:4D and spatial performance using rats in two different tasks (paired-associate task and watermaze) and replicated this in humans. We further clarified anatomical and functional brain correlates of the association between 2D:4D and spatial performance in humans.

El consumo de alcohol durante la gestación puede dar lugar a distintos problemas de diferentes niveles de severidad, englobados en la expresión Trastornos del Espectro Alcohólico Fetal. Hasta el momento no ha podido determinarse una dosis de alcohol segura durante la gestación, por lo cual la recomendación de distintos organismos nacionales e internacionales es la abstinencia. Sin embargo, la evidencia señala que aunque muchas mujeres tiene conocimiento de que el alcohol puede alterar el desarrollo del feto, la mayoría piensa que algún consumo durante la gestación es aceptable. A través de este estudio buscamos contribuir a la comprensión de las relaciones entre información, actitudes y consumo durante la gestación. Para ello, analizamos entrevistas semiestructuradas realizadas a mujeres puérperas en Argentina (n=641). El 70,4% de las mujeres manifestó haber recibido alguna información sobre un potencial efecto adverso del consumo de alcohol durante la gestación, pero pocas de ellas poseían información precisa y sólo el 6,1% mencionó a un profesional de la salud como fuente. La información y las actitudes se encontraron fuertemente vinculadas. Las actitudes se asociaron de modo significativo al consumo de alguna cantidad de alcohol durante la gestación y al consumo excesivo episódico durante ese período. AbstractDrinking alcohol during pregnancy can lead to different problems with different levels of severity, encompassed by the term Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Considering that a safe dose of alcohol during pregnancy has not been determined, the official recommendation of various national and international organizations is abstinence. However, the evidence indicates that although many women are aware that alcohol can alter fetal development, most of them believe that some consumption during pregnancy is acceptable. Through this study, we intend to contribute to the understanding of the relationship between knowledge, attitudes and drinking during pregnancy. To achieve this, we analyze semi structured interviews carried on with puerperal women in Argentina (n = 641). 70.4% of women reported having received some information about a potential adverse effect of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, but few of them had accurate information and only 6.1% mentioned a health professional as source. Information and attitudes were strongly linked. Attitudes were significantly associated to some alcohol consumption during pregnancy and to binge drinking during that period.
