Testate amoebae are single-celled protists whose protoplasm is contained within a carapace composed of gelatinous to imbricated chitinous plates having variable chemical compositions. We inventoried the testate amoebae community present in the plankton and periphyton of the Pantanal dos Marimbus swamp in Bahia state, Brazil. Sixty-five samples of plankton and periphyton were analyzed during May and September/2014 and April/2015. We identified 65 taxa of testate amoebae distributed in eight families, 15 genera, 45 species, and 16 varieties. The most representative families were Arcellidae, Centropyxidae, and Difflugiidae, corresponding to 24.6%, 19.7% and 14.8% of the taxa respectively. The periphyton had greater richness (59 taxa) than the plankton (39 taxa). Of the taxa found, 15 represent new records for Bahia and 14 for northeastern Brazil. The Marimbus Pantanal swamp showed an expressive richness of testate amoebae, and our data increases the number of species of these organisms known to Bahia and northeastern Brazil, where work with those organisms is still scarce.

We report here taxonomic novelties and interesting records of desmids, including new taxa, rare species and new occurrences, collected at three areas (Piatã, Rio de Contas and Palmeiras) in the Chapada Diamantina region, northeastern Brazil. We identified 16 desmids, including six taxa new to science (Cosmarium diamantinum, Euastrum bicudoi, E. piataense, Micrasterias jenneri var. semicirculare, M. torreyi var. pseudocurvata, and Tetmemorus furcatus), as well as new records for Brazil (Euastrum subcyclopicum var. elongatum and Euastrum octogibbosum). Taxonomic notes and ecological information are provided.

We present new records of Hoary Fox, Lycalopex vetulus (Lund, 1842), and Pantanal Cat, Leopardus braccatus Cope, 1889, from a Cerrado-Caatinga-Atlantic Forest ecotone, Brazil. Records are based on three roadkilled specimens (two Hoary Foxes and one Pantanal Cat) from Vitória da Conquista, southern Bahia. Although highly anthropized, the region still holds a mosaic of Cerrado savannas and Caatinga seasonally dry forests. Our records expand the distribution of both species eastwards to southern Bahia and suggest that Leopardus braccatus may occur marginally in the Caatinga.

Thirty four genera and 215 species of Myxomycetes are present in northeastern Brazil, covering 83 % of families, all subclasses and orders recognized for these microorganisms. Ceará, with an area of 148,825,602 km2, is one of the least explored of the nine states in this region of the country, with records of 27 species, distributed across 13 genera, occurring in a humid forest environment of the southern mesoregion. The dominant vegetation type is the Caatinga (dry, tree-shrub deciduous vegetation), with patches of Cerrado (savanna-like vegetation), Carrasco (montane deciduous shrub vegetation) and fragments of Pluvio-nebular Tropical Subperennial Forest and Pluvial Tropical Subdeciduous Forest. In order to better document the diversity of myxomycetes in that state, specimens were collected from the field between 2002-2007 in Ceará’s northern and northwestern mesoregions. The specimens obtained were deposited at the UFP Herbarium. Eighteen species were recorded, occurring in the Caatinga vegetation and the records of Comatricha, Craterium and Metatrichia increase the number of genera which comprise Ceará’s myxobiota to 16. Arcyria denudata, Craterium leucocephalum, Badhamia panicea, B. melanospora, Didymium intermedium, Metatrichia vesparia, Physarum rigidum and P. tenerum are new records for Ceará, increasing the number of species known to occur in the state to 37.

Abstract Pará state has one of the longest coastal in Brazil. However, floristic surveys have been conducted in few regions and only one study has comprehensively evaluated the coastal flora of the state. The objective of this study was to create an updated and certified checklist of the angiosperms in the restingas of Pará. The list was made using literature, floristic and taxonomic revisions, herbaria specimens from HBRA, IAN, MFS and MG, and collections made between 2014 and 2018. Overall, 470 species, 279 genera and 92 families were recorded. Of this total, 11 species are new records for coastal Pará. The families with the greatest number of species are Fabaceae, Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Myrtaceae, Rubiaceae, Asteraceae, Apocynaceae, Polygalaceae, Convolvulaceae and Melastomataceae, which correspond to 52% of the species. Cyperus, Eugenia, Rhynchospora, Eleocharis and Ipomoea are the most representative genera. For life forms, herbs and shrubs are predominant. Dune fields, restinga forest and herbaceous swamp are the phytophysiognomies with the greatest number of species. A comparison with restingas of northeastern Brazil showed that the flora surveyed is most similar to that of Maranhão, since many species of the Amazonian flora also occur in restingas in this state.

Abstract: Bernardia and Tragia are genera of the subfamily Acalyphoideae, with species occurring in tropical and subtropical regions. Studies concerning those genera are scarce in Brazil, including Northeastern Brazil. The present study was designed to study the taxonomy of species occurring there, and provides illustrations, keys, descriptions, and comments concerning taxonomic affinities, as well as information concerning their geographic distributions and environmental preferences. A total of 13 species were encountered, eight of Bernardia and five of Tragia. Of those, B. hamadryadica and T. cearensis are endemic to Northeastern Brazil and B. celastrinea, B. pulchella, and T. chlorocaulon are new records for the region. The two genera occur in moist Atlantic forests, in forest borders, and anthropically impacted areas. New occurrences were recorded in all of the states, totaling 21 new records. The principal diagnostic characters for distinguish were: the sexuality of the plant (monoecious or dioecious), the presence of foliar glands, the types of inflorescence and trichomes, and the numbers of stamens. Among the 13 species encountered, six are illustrated here for the first time.

This study provides a survey of Orchidaceae species in an area of montane Atlantic Forest in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. The study area comprises two conservation units (RPPN Frei Caneca and RPPN Pedra D’Anta), forming together the Serra do Urubu, which is located in the border of the Borborema plateau. Orchidaceae is represented in this study area by 81 species and 50 genera. Epidendrum L. (10 spp.) and Habenaria Willd. (four spp.) are the most representative genera. The subtribes Laeliinae (22 spp.) and Pleurothallidinae (14 spp.) together represent about half of the number of species. The high number of orchid species distinguishes Serra do Urubu as one of the richest areas for the family in the Atlantic Forest in northeastern Brazil. Our study also provides 18 new records of species to Pernambuco as well as reporting on about 40% of the species and 60% of the genera cited to the State. Campylocentrum pernambucense, Cattleya labiata, Cattleya granulosa, Phragmipedium sargentianum and Zygostates bradeiare cited as endangered, 14 species are endemic to the Atlantic Forest, and other seven have distributions restricted to northeastern Brazil. All these facts reinforce the importance of this area as well as management strategies for the conservation of Orchidaceae.

New records for Helicina schereri Baker, 1913, are reported. It was a species previously restricted to the states of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Alagoas and Tocantins in Northeastern Brazil, and State of Santa Catarina, much further south. The new occurrences reported herein fill distribution gaps and also significantly expand the range of the species ca. 970 km westwards. The new records are from the following locations: Bahia State (Ituaçu and Itaquara municipalities) in Northeast Brazil; Mato Grosso do Sul State (Bonito Municipality) in the Midwest; and Minas Gerais (Lagoa Santa municipality) in the Southeast.

This study presents the first records for Maranhão state, northeastern Brazil, of the duckweeds Lemna valdiviana Phil., Wolffia brasiliensis Wedd. and Wolffiella lingulata (Hegelm.) Hegelm. The species were collected in a survey of water bodies in the muncipalities of Caxias, Igarapé do Meio and São João do Sóter. Descriptions, illustrations, maps, georeferenced specimen citations and an identification key are provided. These new records contribute to the expansion of the knowledge of the Maranhão flora and the geographic distribution of the Lemnoideae of the Northeast region of Brazil.

During a taxonomic study of Phyllanthaceae in northeastern Brazil, three new occurrences of Phyllanthus were recorded (P. augustini Baill, P. hyssopifolioides Kunth., and P. riedelianus Müll. Arg.), and diagnoses, distribution information, conservation statuses, as well as affinity comments are provided here. Additionally, the rare species Phyllanthus carvalhoi G.L. Webster was collected, which is endemic to the Atlantic Forest in Bahia State, and we provide an updated morphological description, conservation status, photographs, and unpublished illustrations.

The knowledge about the distribution of Ephemeroptera in Brazil has increased in recent years, contributing to reduce the gaps about its distribution in this country. This paper presents an updated checklist of the species of Ephemeroptera from Pernambuco state, Northeastern Brazil based on bibliography and collections from numerous rivers and streams of 27 counties and 74 localities. In this study, 18 species and 11 genera are recorded for the first time from Pernambuco state, increasing from 43 to 61 the number of known species. With these results, Pernambuco becomes the state with highest number of species in Northeastern Region of Brazil. Moreover, Caenis chamie is reported for the first time from Brazil.
