The distribution of the Persian bleak, Alburnus hohenackeri Kessler, 1870 in Iran is described. During a survey from 2009 to 2012, we captured 30 specimens of A. hohenackeri from Choghakhor Wetland in Tigris River basin and Kardeh Dam in Harirud River basin of Iran. This is the first report of the occurrence of this species in these localities. The main distribution range in Iran is the southern part of the Caspian Sea from where it has been translocated to the other Iranian basins along with exotic Chinese carps.

Azerbaijan is a nation with a Turkic population which regained its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. It has an area of approximately 86 000 km2. Georgia and Armenia, the other countries comprising the Transcaucasian region, border Azerbaijan to the north and west, respectively. Russia also borders the north, Iran and Turkey the south, and the Caspian Sea borders the east. The total population is about 8 million. The largest ethnic group is Azeri, comprising 90% of the population; Dagestanis comprise 3.2%, Russians 2.5%, Armenians 2% and others 2.3%.

The first report of Sartor (Anostomidae) and Tatia intermedia (Auchenipteridae) for the Upper Tapajós River Basin are presented here. Sartor is very rare on collections, and is reported only from the Trombetas, Tocantins and Upper Xingu river basins. Tatia intermedia is registered in the upper reaches of the Araguaia, Tocantins, Xingu, and Capim rivers, tributaries of the lower Amazon River in Brazil, northwards to the Suriname coastal rivers and the Essequibo River in Guyana.

This first survey in 2009 and 2010 on silica-scaled Chrysophytes in Zhenbao Island Wetland Preserve, Northeast China, recorded 32 taxa (5 in Chrysophyceae and 27 in Synurophyceae), of which 29 were previously found in other parts of China, three species, Spiniferomonas serrata, Mallomonas transsylvanica and Synura punctulosa are new records to China. In terms of biogeography, 1 taxon is endemic, 2 bipolar, 1 northern temperate, 9 cosmopolitan, and 18 of wide distribution. The endemism of Synura punctulosa, appears due to its poor dispersal ability; lack of sampling data may also contribute its known distribution range. Spiniferomonas serrata and Mallomonas transsylvanica, two bipolar taxa, are the first report in China. More research efforts are needed for adequately understanding the distributions of this group of algae.

A new endemic species, Verbascum shahsavarensis, is described from north of Iran. Based on two unique characters of this species, these being two anterior longitudinally obliquely inserted anthers and an ebracteolate pedicel, we compared it to species described by Murbeck in 1933. The new species can be easily distinguished from the other Iranian species by having bi-colored hairs on the stamen filaments and the unique anther and pedicel characters. A distribution map is provided. The name of new species comes from Shahsavar, the ancient name of Tonekabon, an old coastal city on the Caspian Sea.

Urgency of the issues concerning studying water quality in mountain-glacial high-mountain regions of the Caucasus where the rivers feeding the Kabardino-Balkar Republic lowland parts originate has been highlighted. The Bezengiysky Canyon river waters have been investigated for Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ag, Ni, Cr, and Cd content. The high-mountain glacial/mountain fed Cherek Bezengiysky River microelements’ concentration values have been compared from the source to the mouth both during winter low-water and glacial flood periods. It has been stated that river water microelements contamination in the high-mountain region is caused by natural geochemical and geo/morphological background and is connected with the microelements washing out mountain rocks. Earlier investigations have shown that the microelements concentration significantly drops in comparison with the upper reach when the river enters the lowlands. It was found that the Cherek Bezengiysky River waters under study in terms of Mn, Pb, Cr, Cd, Ni, Cu, and Ag content could be classified as clean water excluding Zn which made the water very polluted. Minimal, maximal and average values of the main ion and nitrogen-containing substances concentrations during winter low-water and glacial flood periods have been presented. The value of the conducted investigation is determined by the fact that the Cherek Bezengiysky River inflows to the Terek River and forms the Caspian Sea river basin.

The material described consists of two small collections. One composed mainly of helminths from birds, was collected by Major T. A. Cockburn, M.D., D.P.H., on the Gold Coast in 1943. The other was collected from mammals by Dr. K. Morris, of the medical department, Kumasi, in 1939. To both of these collectors and to Dr. R. T. Leiper, C.M.G., F.R.S., who kindly put the material at my disposal, I am much indebted.The bird material contained 8 different genera, of which one is a tremtftode, three are cestodes and the others are nematodes. The Acanthocephala are not represented.A Squacco Heron, Ardeola ralloides, yielded a number of specimens of the trematode Clinostomum complanatum (Rud., 1814), Braun, 1899. They were taken from the oesophagus where they were actively moving about at the post-mortem examination. It is a small worm between 3 and 4 mm. long, strongly muscular with comparatively large suckers. The vitellaria are abundant and so deeply staining as somewhat to obscure the other organs. It has previously been recorded as a parasite of Ardea cinerea and Nycticorax griseus in Europe, but apparently both this host and this geographical distribution are new records. The vector is a fish; Ciurea in 1911 having implicated Perca fluviatilis.

AbstractRove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphilinidae) are a group of diverse insects occurring in a range of different ecosystems, from the plains to the mountaintops. However, there are no reports in the literature of their presence in the tidal zone of the seashore. This is the first report of the presence ofPaederus fuscipesCurtis on the coastal sands of the Caspian Sea, northern Iran. In all 14 counties of Mazandaran Province on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, systematic monthly sampling of the beetles took place from May 2012 to April 2013. Samplings (30-min-person) were performed and specimens collected from the sandy seashore by gloved bare hands and identified using appropriate keys. To our surprise, all 1012 specimens collected were exclusivelyP. fuscipesCurtis, but with significant seasonal and geographical variations among the numbers of specimens collected. The distribution and activity ofP. fuscipeswere outstanding in Mahmoodabad and Fereidonkenar counties, with the highest abundance and frequency in September, posing a serious health threat to tourists and residents of these areas.

The collapse of the USSR resulted for Azerbaijan to pursue an independent foreign policy. Azerbaijan focused on establishing and furthering relations with Western states, primarily, with the United States. Official Baku considered the United States as an important partner to provide support for the economic development and production of hydrocarbon resources. On the other side, the United States also increased its focus on Azerbaijan due to the favorable geographical position of the Caspian state and the pro-Western attitude of its political elite. The US counted on taking advantage of Azerbaijan to change the flow of oil, which was supposed to be produced in the future. The United States played a decisive role in expanding Azerbaijan's cooperation with Western oil companies, which headed for the shores of the Caspian Sea. As a result, the Azerbaijani-American cooperation in the 90s of the XX century led Baku to chose the western direction in exporting its hydrocarbon resources as the principal one. In addition, under the US influence, Azerbaijan took a tough position on the international legal status of the Caspian Sea. Cooperation between the United States and Azerbaijan has had a great impact on the situation in the region, relations with Russia and the other Caspian states.

AbstractIn the Papaloapan River two freshwater prawns with abbreviated development have been recorded: Macrobrachium villalobosi (a stygobitic species) and Macrobrachium totonacum (an epigeal species). In this paper we describe four new species from this genus, and the distribution of these six species along the river basin. M. oaxacae nov. sp. occurs in the River La Junta, and together with M. cosolapaense nov. sp. is geographically close to the stygobitic species and M. totonacum, but differs from these in the following aspects: pigmentation, the number of rostral spines, and the relative proportions of the articles of the second pereiopod, of appendix masculina and appendix interna, and the number of spines on the appendix masculina. Macrobrachium mazatecum nov. sp. lives in two streams in Veracruz: the first close to Tierra Blanca Veracruz and the second on the Zapotal Veracruz near Mpio. Lerdo de Tejada. This species was also recorded in two springs near Valle Nacional Oaxaca, and differs from M. oaxacae nov. sp. and M. cosolapaense nov. sp. in the number of rostral spines, and the relative proportions on the articles of second pereiopod, of appendix masculina and appendix interna, and of the spines on the appendix masculina. Finally, Macrobrachium jacatepecense nov. sp. occurs only in a spring near Jacatepec, Oaxaca. This species differs from the other species in the relative proportions of the articles of the second pereiopod: however, it is very close to Macrobrachium oaxacae nov. sp. in the number of rostral spines, but based on the geographical distribution of both species and other features, it is clearly a different species. In this Papaloapan River basin, the distribution of this complex of species is very limited, because the various populations live in very restricted areas associated with springs or small streams, and without direct interconnections. All these new species are comparable with the epigeal Macrobrachium species in the southeast of Mexico that have abbreviated larval development.

The purpose of this paper is to model tidal conditions in the Caspian Sea using data from coastal tide gauges of Anzali, Noshahr, and Neka Ports. Harmonic analysis method was used to identify and examine 40 tidal components. The results illustrate that the annual (Sa) and semiannual solar (Ssa) components on all of the ports listed have the highest range in comparison with the other components which are, respectively, 16 cm, 18 cm, and 15 cm for annual components and 2.8 cm, 5.4 cm, and 3.7 cm for semiannual components.
