We report a new record for the bushy-tailed opossum Glironia venusta Thomas, 1912 and the water opossum Chironectes minimus (Zimmermann, 1780) in the Floresta Nacional de Carajás, municipality of Parauapebas, state of Pará, Brazil (06°03’00” S, 50°15’00” W). This study represents the second record of Glironia venusta, but the first voucher specimen for eastern Brazilian Amazon. For Chironectes minimus, this record extends the range of the species 558 km southeastwards from the closest known locality in Pará.

ABSTRACT Peperomia is the second most diverse genus of Piperaceae, with an estimated 1,600 species and a pantropical distribution. This work aims to present a taxonomic synopsis of the genus in the State of Roraima, in the extreme north of the Brazilian Amazon forest and belonging to the central-south portion of the Guayana Shield. Based on collecting expeditions and analysis of specimens in various herbaria, 23 taxa were recognized, with two new records for the State and one of them, a new record for Brazil. The taxa are differentiated mainly by phyllotaxis, shape and size of their leaves, in addition to habit and fruits. They have been found in areas of lowland, submontane, montane, tepui and floodplain (várzea) forests and mostly show a distribution restricted to the Neotropics. Some species in the state are presently known exclusively from Mount Roraima, and restricted to a few specimens.

A new record of a native vascular plant, Lactuca hirsuta Muhlenberg ex Nuttall var. sanguinea (Bigelow) Fernald, is reported for Iowa. A specimen was collected in 1983 by the author during a study of the Swaledale railroad prairie in Cerro Gordo County, north central Iowa (Eddy 1988). The plant was inexplicably excluded in the species catalogue when a Swaledale railroad flora was published in 1988; thus, this “new” Iowa record in 2013 was collected 30 years prior. The voucher specimen was “re-discovered” by Dr. Neil A. Harriman at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (OSH), and its identification verified.

Abstract: The present study aims to document the community composition, abundance, and species richness of saprophytic fly species (Mesembrinellidae, Neriidae, Ropalomeridae, and Sarcophagidae) of the Volta Grande region of the Xingu River, a poorly sampled area impacted by the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam. Five collecting trips were carried out between 2014 and 2016, when traps baited with fermenting bananas were used. A total of 154 specimens, three genera, and six species were collected of Mesembrinellidae; 196 specimens, three genera, and seven species of Neriidae; 272 specimens, three genera, and six species of Ropalomeridae; and 624 specimens, 22 species and 10 genera of Sarcophagidae. Species accumulation curves for all families except Sarcophagidae demonstrated a strong tendency towards stabilization, showing that sampling efforts were sufficient to record most of the targeted species. Laneela perisi (Mariluis, 1987) (Mesembrinellidae) is a new record for the state of Pará. Among Ropalomeridae, Apophorhynchus amazonensisPrado, 1966, is a new record for Pará. Among Sarcophagidae, Helicobia aurescens (Townsend, 1927) is newly recorded from the Brazilian Amazon, and Ravinia effrenata (Walker, 1861) and Titanogrypa larvicida (Lopes, 1935) are new records for Pará.

Background: The southern part of Namibia’s terrain is highly inaccessible making it difficult to explore. Expeditions into difficult terrain can result in new biological discoveries for Namibia. Monsonia herrei has been recorded for South Africa, but has not previously been recorded for Namibia.Objectives: As part of updating the biodiversity records of Namibia, we report the occurrence of a species not previously recorded for the Namibian flora.Method: A botanical field trip was undertaken in September 2014 to the far south of Namibia in the Aussenkehr region along the Orange River. Plant identification was carried out based on herbarium vouchers, observation and photographic records. One collection constituted a new record of the species for Namibia. A voucher specimen of this new record was collected and deposited at the National Botanical Research Institute Herbarium (WIND). Plant identification was confirmed by experts on plants from the region.Results: One species not previously recorded for Namibia, namely Monsonia herrei (L. Bolus) F. Albers, was found during the exploration of the Aussenkehr area.Conclusions: This new record for Namibia confirms the need to update the inventory of the flora of Namibia.

Xylomyces is characterized by the absence of conidiomata, conidiophores, conidiogenous cells, and conidia. The genus only produces chains of large, dark, thick-walled, dry, multiseptate chlamydospores with or without constricted septa. During an investigation of aquatic hyphomycetes on submerged wood and leaf litter in a stream in the Brazilian Amazon, we found four of the accepted eight species of Xylomyces. Xylomyces acerosisporus, X. aquaticus, and X. foliicola are new records to the Brazilian Amazon, while X. giganteus is a new record for the southern Amazonian region. Xylomyces giganteus showed the highest relative frequency and occurrence and X. foliicola displayed an intermediate relative frequency and occurrence. Xylomyces acerosisporus and X. aquaticus showed the lowest relative frequency, while X. acerosisporus indicated the lowest relative occurrence. Descriptions, notes, geographic distributions, and illustrations are presented for all species of Xylomyces found in this study. We also provide a key and a table for all species.

ABSTRACT The first record of Phyllanthus chacoensis for the Brazilian Amazon is presented, based on a specimen from Rondônia state. The species can be recognized by its cauliflorous inflorescence, staminate and pistillate flowers with 4 sepals, devoid of a floral disk, 4 stamens, 2-carpellary ovary, drupaceous, ellipsoidal fruits, with one seed per locule. The species was previously known only from the central-western and northeastern regions of the Caatinga and Pantanal domains in Brazil. We provide a list of synonyms, a detailed description, an updated geographic distribution map in Brazil, data on habitat and conservation status, illustrations of its reproductive characters, and detailed photographs. We also propose a lectotype for the species.

Two new species and a new record of Calycomyza Hendel are described for the Brazilian Amazon: Calycomyza rolandrae sp. nov. and Calycomyza dryas sp. nov. This is the first time we recorded Calycomyza hyptisicola Spencer and Calycomyza richardsi (Spencer) in Brazil. These species can be distinguished by the structure of the male terminalia, but the female terminalia can be an important taxonomic character, especially the ninth abdominal sternite, ninth abdominal tergite and the marginal seta.

Here, we report the new record of deep-sea caridean shrimp Glyphocrangon investigatoris Wood-Mason & Alcock, 1891 from the Arabian Sea along the Indian coast. The three individual specimens were collected from Sakthikulangara fish landing center (fishing off Kollam 8°56’60.78”N/76°32’34.27”E) obtained from deep-sea bottom trawlers between 200 and 300 m depth along the southwest coast of India in December of 2017 and the voucher specimen was deposited to the Marine Biodiversity Referral Museum at Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute. The species of G. investigatoris is considered as one of the data deficient in distributional range, which was only recorded from northern and southern Bay of Bengal. The intraspecies genetic distance in the COI gene of G. investigatoris retrieved from NCBI revealed 0.6–0.7% while interspecies distance ranged from 5% to 26.5% and 16S was found between 1.1% to 8.1% and the closest genetic distance ranged with G. regalis.

This paper reports a new record of Quiva diaphana Hebard and Quiva pulchella Rehn to Brazil along with the occurrence of Quiva abacata (Brunner von Wattenwyl) for the first time in the Brazilian Amazon, including distribution notes. Novos Registros de Esperanças do Gênero Quiva (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae: Phaneropterinae) para o Brasil Resumo. Este trabalho reporta novos registros de ocorrência de Quiva diaphana Hebard e Quiva pulchella Renh para o Brasil, juntamente com a ocorrência de Quiva abacata (Brunner von Wattenwyl) pela primeira vez para a Amazônia brasileira, incluindo notas de distribuição.

Phimophisguerini Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, 1854 is a Xenodontinae snake distributed in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. In Brazil, the species is broadly distributed, occurring mainly in open areas of the Cerrado, but also in the Amazon, Atlantic forest and Caatinga. We provide a new record for this species from the municipality of Santarém in the western portion of the state of Pará (Brazil). Five specimens were collected in a small area covered with Amazonian Savanna vegetation. We also provide the description of the morphological variation for the collected specimens. The new record extends the northern limit of the distribution by some 640 km (from Floresta Nacional de Carajás, Parauapebas municipality, eastern Pará). The record from Santarém provides a third locality for P.guerini within the Amazon biome and supports the hypothesis of a past ecological corridor linking the Cerrado and the open habitats within the Amazon.
