ABSTRACTPorous silica glasses have been prepared using an HF-catalyzed tetraethoxysilane(TEOS)-ethanol-water formulation. The optical and physical properties of these glasses, which find use as host matrices for optical organic dyes, can be further improved with the addition of 1,3,5-trioxane to the sol-gel chemical system. In order to understand the effect of trioxane, the time-dependent concentrations of the species involved in TEOS hydrolysis and condensation have been followed by Raman, FT-IR, and NMR spectroscopie methods in both HF-catalyzed TEOS-ethanol-water systems with and without trioxane.

AbstractThis work shows how the geometrical confinements enhances the nuclear relaxation of a non wetting liquid in a model porous systems. Application of the proposed theory is made to interpret the size and frequency dependences of the 1H relaxation of methylcyclohexane liquid in sol-gel porous silica glasses with narrow pore-size distribution.

Abstract Using the sol-gel auto combustion approach with diethanolamine (DEA) as fuel, a sequence of iron-substituted zinc aluminates, ZnFexAl2−xO4 powders, including variable Fe3+ ion concentrations (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) were effectively created. XRD, FT-IR, SEM, EDS, BET, UV-DRS, and VSM were employed to examine the structures, chemical bonds, morphologies, composition, surface area, and optical properties as well as the magnetic behavior of the collected samples. A single-phase spinel structure was gained for the calcined aluminate powders with different interplanar spacing and crystallite sizes, as revealed by the classification results. The bandgap energy (Eg) of adapted aluminates was in the range of 2.08–3.14 eV, identified as being much lower compared to the pure sample (5.60 eV). Thus, Fe3+-substituted ZnAl2O4 samples could be successfully photoexcited using both ultraviolet and visible light, as suggested by the results. Examination of how the four main pollutant types decay when irradiated by sunlight was carried out to assess the samples and establish photocatalytic activity. These contaminants included phenol rhodamine B (RhB), heteropolyaromatic methylene blue (MB), azoic methyl orange (MO) and methyl red (MR). The performance of photocatalytic degradation reached 98% after 150 minutes for all optimal samples of organic dyes. Besides, each of the altered photocatalysts could be recycled and displayed high stability. The S-shaped curve of ferrimagnetism can result from in those samples as found by the magnetic measurements, though pure ZnAl2O4 displays diamagnetic characteristics. The adapted samples show intense improvement in the remanent magnetization (Mr) when compared to pure ZnAl2O4, signifying that magnetic photocatalyst recovery by applying an external magnetic field is easy. Thus, these results offer a convincing sign that ZnAl2O4 powders replaced by Fe3+ could provide the ability to aid in the ecologically-friendly collection of solar energy.

Highly Nano-porous SiO2-ZrO2 aerogels were manufactured with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and zirconyl nitrate dihydrate (ZrO(NO3)2 .5H2O) by the sol-gel method followed by supercritical drying technique. The prepared aerogels are performed by SEM, FT-IR and BET to characterize and analyze the morphology and pore structure of SiO2-ZrO2 aerogels. The results showed that:(i) The areogels are the typical of nano pores in the interval between 1<Dp<30 nm; (ii) the specific surface areas varied from 300 to 620 m2/g with (SBET)MAX = 615.5 m2/g with 35wt% Zirconia and the surface areas decreased with the increase of zirconia; The thermal conductivity attains 0.015 W/(m.k) ; (iii) a mass of Si-O-Zr bands existed in the aerogels indicating a homogeneous distribution of the components on the nano scale.

ABSTRACTThe sol-gel process was used to incorporate organic dyes including Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G), 2-(4-pyridyl)-5-(4-phenyl) oxazole (4PyPO) and the n-methyl tosylate salt of 2-(4-pyridyl)-5-(4-methoxy phenyl)oxazole (4PyMPO-MePTS) in silica gel. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis of the dye doped gels showed that the gel structure loses the adsorbed water molecules from room temperature to 150°C and decomposition of the dye molecules followed at the higher temperature. Absorption and emission of the dyes in the sol-gel glass matrix were also studied and compared with the results of the dyes in alcohol solution. The environments of the dye in silica were different than in alcohol solution.

One well-known method for hybrids synthesis with incorporated organic dyes is sol-gel method, which is based on the concept of molecular manipulation to design ceramics, glasses, and composites. The low-temperature process allows for the incorporation of guest organic molecules within the inorganic matrix, as well as for the synthesis of hybrid networks in which the organic and inorganic phases are interpenetrating. The aim of the work presented in this paper was the preparation of the gels with three different dyes, at different molar ratios by using the hydrolytic sol-gel process. The interaction of the dye and the oxide was examined by UV-vis spectroscopy and FT-IR. The thermal stability of the hybrid organic-inorganic xerogel formed here was studied by thermal analysis. The micrographs obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the high density of the films. Such characteristics indicate the possible application of these films in solar cells.

AbstractPhotoresistant laser dyes were trapped in silica based xerogel host matrices to obtain solid state tunable lasers. For this purpose very dense xerogel samples with improved chemical and physical properties were prepared at room temperature by the sol-gel technology. The as-prepared materials were polished to obtain optical quality surfaces and were used as new lasing media.Lasing action of such different dyes as rhodamine, perylene and pyrromethene doping dense sol-gel matrices was demonstrated. Efficiencies of 30 % or lifetimes of more than 100,000 shots were achieved with different new ≤dye dopant/host matrix≥ couples. Their different performances are reviewed and discussed.
