Scientific advices on population dynamic of banana prawn (P. merguiensis de Man) are required as an input to support an apropriate fisheries management. This study aims to identify the population parameters of the banana prawn in Tanah Laut waters. The study was conducted in Tanah Laut based on monthly enumeration data (January to November 2016). Results has been shown that the length size of carapace at first maturity of banana prawn was 43.39 mm. Sex ratio of males and females was 1 : 0.8. The chi square test indicated that comparison of male and female of the banana prawn was significantly different. It means that there was not balance in number between males and females. The spawning season of banana prawn in Tanah Laut waters happened throughout year and reached the peak on November (south-east monsoon). The growth parameter of banana prawn was 1.05/year with maximum carapace length (Loo) of 55.0 mm. Instantaneous total mortality (Z) and natural mortality (M) were 6.05/year and 1.58/year, respectively. While fishing mortality (F) and exploitation rate (E) respectively were 4.47/year and 0.74/year respectively. The exploitation rate of banana prawn in Tanah Laut waters was high. Therefore, fishing effort of the banana prawn in that waters should be reduced to about 48 % for next coming year.

Study on the population dynamic of endeavour shrimp (Metapenaus ensis) was conducted in Binuangeun waters based on data collected during period of survey, January to November 2016. The purpose of the study was to identify population parameters of the endeavour shrimp. Result showed that the endeavor shrimp growth pattern in Binuangeun waters was negative allometric and sex ratio of males and females was 1.0 : 2.7. The chi square test indicated that comparison of male and female of the endeavour shrimp was significantly different. It mean that there was imbalance in number between males and females. The length at first capture (Lc) of endeavour shrimp was 28.9 mm (carapace length),smaller than the length at first maturity (Lm) at 37.7 mm (carapace length). The growth parameter of endeavour shrimp was 1.33/year with maximum carapace length (Loo) of 51.45 mm. Instantenous total mortality (Z) and natural mortality (M) were 7.74/year and 1.88/year, respectively. While fishing mortality (F) and exploitation rate (E) respectively were 5.86/year and 0.76/year. The exploitation rate of endeavour shrimp in Binuangeun and adjacent waters was high. It was, therefore, recommended that fishing effort of the endeavour shrimp in that waters should be reduced about 52 % in the next year.

A study on the stock status of blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus Linnaeus, 1758) was conducted in Tanah Laut, South Kalimantan waters, based on data collected in March to November 2017. The results showed that the growth pattern of blue swimming crab in Tanah Laut waters was negatively allometric and the sex ratio of males to females was 1.0 : 1.7. The chi-square test indicated that the total males and total females of the blue swimming crab was significantly different. It means that there was an imbalance in numbers between males and females. The estimated length at first capture (Lc) was 127.26 mm (carapace width; CW), smaller than the length at first maturity (Lm) at 133.24 mmCW. The growth parameter of blue swimming crab was 1.1year with a maximum carapace width (L) of 204.3 mmCW. The estimated instantaneous total mortality (Z) and natural mortality (M) were 3.04/year and 1.24/year, respectively. While fishing mortality (F) and exploitation rate (E) were 1.80/year and 0.59/year, respectively, the estimated spawning potential ratio (SPR) was 11.1 %. Therefore, the stock status was categorized as overfishing. In order to ensure the sustainability of the blue swimming crab, a precautionary approach,, such as reducing fishing effort by 18 % of the current situation, is strongly recommended to apply.

Tingkat eksploitasi udang putih (Penaeus merguiensis) sangat intensif. Hal ini terindikasi dengan hasil tangkapan udang di WPP-NRI 716 selama 9 tahun terakhir meningkat. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengkaji beberapa parameter populasi dan aspek biologi udang putih di perairan Tarakan. Data panjang karapas dan tingkat kematangan gonad udang putih dikumpulkan dari tempat pendaratan udang di Selumit Pantai, Tarakan, Kalimantan Utara pada Januari sampai dengan November 2016. Pendugaan parameter populasi dengan aplikasi model analisis menggunakan program ELEFAN 1. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan rata-rata ukuran udang putih pertama kali tertangkap (Lc) pada panjang karapas 32,51 mm dan rata-rata ukuran pertama kali matang gonad 33,58 mm. Puncak musim pemijahan terjadi pada Maret dan Agustus. Laju pertumbuhan (K) sebesar 1,33 per tahun (betina) dan 1,55 per tahun (jantan). Laju kematian total (Z) sebesar 7,5 per tahun (betina) dan 8,85 per tahun (jantan), laju kematian alamiah (M) sebesar 1,82 per tahun (betina) dan 2,16 per tahun (jantan) serta laju kematian akibat penangkapan (F) sebesar 5,68 per tahun (betina) dan 6,69 per tahun (jantan). Laju pengusahaan (E) udang putih di perairan Tarakan adalah sebesar 0,76 per tahun. Hal ini menunjukkan tingkat pemanfaatan udang putih telah mengalami lebih tangkap (overfishing). Kondisi ini menggambarkan perlunya dilakukan pengurangan upaya sekitar 52 %.  The banana prawn (Penaeus merguiensis) have been exploited intensively. For instance, within nine years the number of shrimp production in FMA 716 increased dramatically. This research aims to identify the some population parameters of banana prawn in the Tarakan waters. This research was carried out from January to November 2016. Data were analyzed using the analytical model application with ELEFAN I. The result showed that the length at first capture (Lc) of banana prawn was 32,51 mmCL and the length at first maturity (Lm) was 33,58 mm CL. The peak season of spawning period was indicated on March and August. The growth rate (K) was 1,33 /year (female) and 1.55/year (male). Total mortality rate (Z) was 7.5/year (female) and 8,85/year (male), natural mortality rate (M) rate was 1.82/year (female) and 2.16/year (male) and fishing mortality rate ( F) were 5.68/ year (female) and 6.69/year (male). The exploitation rate (E) of banana prawn in the Tarakan waters was 0.76 per year. Therefore, level of existing fishing effort of the banana prawn should reduced about 52 % in the next year.

Study of biology and population dynamic of banana shrimp (<em>Penaeus merguiensis</em>) in Tarakan waters, East Borneo was carried out from January to November 2012. The aim of this research was to identify the biological aspects and population dynamics of banana shrimp. For estimating dynamic population, data were analysed using FiSAT II. The result showed that length at first capture (Lc) of banana shrimp by mini trawl (pukat hela) was 35 mm and the size at first maturity (Lm) was 33,86 mm in carapace length. Spawning occured all year around and reached it’s peak in March. The growth coefficient (K) of banana shrimp was 1,45/year with carapace asymptotic length (CL”) of 80 mm. Total mortality rate (Z) and natural mortality rate (M) were 4,85/year and 1,76/year. While fishing mortality rate (F) and exploitation rate (E) were 3,09/year and 0,64, respectively. The exploitation rate of banana shrimp in Tarakan waters tended to be overexploited so that it needed to be managed wisely and carefully by reducing the fishing effort and fishing season especially on spawning season. The recruitment peak of banana shrimp occured in May.

Sumber daya udang di perairan Arafura merupakan salah satu modal menuju kemakmuran bagi bangsa, apabila dikelola secara berkelanjutan. Kajian dinamika populasi udang, merupakan salah satu dasar utama dalam merumuskan pengelolaan tersebut menuju pemanfaatan sumber daya yang lestari. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui dinamika populasi udang dogol dan udang windu di perairan Arafura dan sekitarnya. Penelitian dilakukan dari bulan Januari 2013 sampai dengan Nopember 2013 dan analisis dilakukan dengan menggunakan FAO-ICLARM Fisheris Stok Assessment Tools (FISAT). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa laju pertumbuhan (K) udang dogol sebagai 1,33 per tahun dan panjang karapas maksimum (L) sebagai 52,0 mm. Untuk udang windu didapatkan nilai K sebagai 1,45 per tahun dan nilai L sebagai 62,5 mm. Laju kematian total (Z) udang dogol sebagai 4,79 per tahun, laju kematian karena penangkapan (F) dan laju kematian alami (M) masing-masing 2,91 per tahun dan 1,88 per tahun. Untuk udang windu didapatkan nilai Z sebagai 6,13 per tahun, nilai F dan nilai M masing-masing 4,24 dan 1,89 per tahun. Laju pengusahaan (E) udang dogol 0,61 per tahun dan nilai E udang windu sebagai 0,69 per tahun. Tingkat pemanfaatan sudah berada dalam tahapan overfishing dan perlu dilakukan pengurangan jumlah upaya 22% untuk udang dogol dan 38% untuk udang windu.Shrimp resources within Arafura Sea if under sustainably management it would contribute a significant role as a source of nation welfare. The analysis is using the FAO-ICLAM Fisheries Stock Assessment Tools (FiSAT). Result showed that the growth parameter of endeavour shrimp was 1.33/year with maximum carapace length (L) of 52.0 mm. Instantenous total mortality (Z) and natural mortality (M) were 4.79/year and 1.88/year, respectively. While fishing mortality (F) and exploitation rate (E) of endeavour shrimp respectively were 2.91/year and 0.61/year. The growth parameter of king tiger prawn was 1.45/year with maximum carapace length (L) of 62.5 mm. Instantenous total mortality (Z) and natural mortality (M) were 6.13/year and 1.89/year, respectively. While fishing mortality (F) and exploitation rate (E) of king tiger prawn respectively were 4.24/year and 0.69/year. The exploitation rate of endeavour shrimp and king tiger prawn in Arafura Sea was overfishing. It was, therefore, recommended that fishing effort of 22% the endeavour shrimp and 38% king tiger prawn in that waters should be reduced in the next year.

The study evaluated some population parameters of Polydactylus quadrifilis within Ebrié lagoon (Potou sector). Samples were obtained using artisanal gillnet fishery from April 2004 to March 2006. A total of 741 individuals of P. quadrifilis ranged from 11 to 70 cm were examined. Population parameters were estimated where asymptotic length (L∞) was found 60 cm, growth rate (K) 0.33 per year, the longevity (T max) 9.09 years, and growth performance index (Φ′) 3.06. The length at first capture (Lc50 = 10.60 cm) was lower than the length at first maturity (Lm50 = 40 cm). Total mortality rate (Z) was calculated as 1.10 per year including natural mortality and fishing mortality. The exploitation rate (E=0.36) was found to be less than the maximum exploitation rate (E max = 0.44) and indicated that P. quadrifilis is not overexploited. The current exploitation rate should be maintained by sustainable fisheries measures including monitoring of fishing effort.

The current study investigates the request strategies used by males and females in online religious forums. It aims to explore request types realized by linguistic formulas used by males and females when they make requests in computer-mediated communication. The study offers pragmatic and sociolinguistic explanations for these differences. It also discusses the functions of these requestive forms such as asking for more clarifications or to request the addressee to answer a question directly. This study found that there are seven strategies used by the participants to make their requests. Most of which are shared by males and females. The study applied Chi-square test to show whether or not the differences in the use of each type of requests between the two groups (males and females) are statistically significant.

The brushtooth lizardfish Saurida undosquamis (Richardson, 1848) is a high trophic level benthic predator and is one among the most exploited demersal finfish species from eastern Arabian Sea by Indian trawlers. However, in recent years, the landings of many top predator fishes including S. undosquamis showed a declining trend resulting in a steady decline in the mean trophic levels of the fishes caught commercially in the region. We investigated the growth, mortality and stock dynamics of S. undosquamis harvested by mechanised trawls in the southeastern Arabian Sea, using length-based methods for the data collected during 2012–2016. Besides, Bayesian state-space implementation of the Schaefer model (BSM) and catch-based MSY (CMSY) estimation were also made using the data for the period 1985–2016. Total length of the fish ranged from 5.5 to 34.5 cm with average annual mean length of 22.0 cm during 2012–2016. The growth parameters L∞ and K were 37.3 cm and 0.41 year−1, respectively. The natural, fishing and total mortality coefficients were 0.92, 2.58 and 3.5, respectively and exploitation ratio was 0.82. The length at first maturity was estimated at 21.4 cm for females. The mean size in the catch is lower than the optimum length for exploitation. Fisheries reference points (MSY, Fmsy, Bmsy) as well as relative stock size (B/Bmsy) and exploitation (F/Fmsy) estimated from catch data and broad priors for resilience (r), implies an exploitation of 30% below Bmsy level. Results from the length-based Thompson and Bell prediction model indicates that reducing the present level of fishing effort by 40% would lead to a harvest of the species at a sustainable level. As “fishing down food web” is reported in recent years from eastern Arabian Sea, the exploitation of top predators need to be maintained at sustainable levels to prevent ecosystem changes along the region.

Purpose. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate clinically the percentage of permanent mandibular first molar teeth with three roots amongst Palestinian population. Patients and Methods. Three hundred twenty-two mandibular first molars from 185 females and 137 males scheduled for root canal treatment at the Dental Center of the Arab American University were examined over a 2-year period. The incidence of a third root revealed by periapical radiographs and the comparison of the occurrence between males and females and between the right and left sides of the mandible were recorded. Statistical Analysis. It was performed using the chi-square test with a significant level set at P<0.05%. Results. Of the 322 treated mandibular first molars, twelve teeth were found to have a third root with an overall incidence being 3.73%. More teeth with a third root were treated on the right side of the mandible compared to the left side. Conclusion. The incidence of a third root in Palestinian population was within the range of previous reports from the Middle East but considerably lower than the percentage from the Far East.

The province of South Kalimantan has the largest peat swamp that is named Danau Panggang Swamp with an area of 5,390.7 Ha. This swamp has ecological, economic and potential functions of a large fishery resource. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the exploitation rate of Snake Head Fish (Channa striata) in Danau Panggang Swamp, by population dynamic analysis using FISAT program of Von Bertalanffy method.  The results showed that the growth pattern of Snake Head Fish (Channa striata) has the tendency to grow negative allometric with 63.4 cm of long infifer (L¥), growth rate (k) 0.15 per year, theoretical age at the time of the fish is equal to 0 (t0) is -1.48257 years. While the natural mortality rate (M) was 0.43, the mortality rate due to catch (F) of 0.69/year and the total mortality rate  (Z) of 1.12/year, and the rate of exploitation value E = 0.62.  These results indicated that the exploitation rate of Head Snake Fish (Channa striata) in Danau Panggang swamp has a tendency to overfishing.
